Rating: Summary: Poor character develop. & predictable outcome--NOT MC's Best Review: Crichton weaves what could be an interesting tale of underwater science fiction, however the characters are unimaginative and the conclusion is easy to predict. Save your money for other Crichton classics.
Rating: Summary: Don't care what others say-- 10 all the way!!! Review: Read this book in two days. That's right, two days, even though I have school and the swim team and the book is 300 pages long. Why did I read it in two days? I couldn't stop thinking about it! The only thing that was shaky about it was the ending, but before Crichton makes the mistake of the bad ending the suspense is already over and it's all wrapped up in a tight little package. With ribbons. A must read!!!
Rating: Summary: A very thrilling book, I couldn't put it down Review: This is the first Chrichton book that I have read, so I can't compare it to other books, but this is definetly one of the best books I've read yet. I may only be 13, but I couldn't put it down. It takes alien books to a whole new level. I like the fact the everthing doesn't work out perfect. A lot of books get boring because you can always predict what will happen. In my opinion, a good book is one the surprises you throughout the book, and this definitly does that. It's full of surprising twists and turns, and I just hope that the rest of his books are as good as this one was. The only flaw, in my opinion, was the personality of the psychologist, it wasn't a very intresting person to have as the main charecter, and he (Chichton), didn't make you feel as if you were the charecter as other authors sometimes do. Other than that, it was a great book. I hope the rest are as good, or I'm in for a big disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Crichton's Best Review: This book is sooooooooo good. I think it is one of the best extra terestrial books ever written. It's about these scientists who go down and investigate a futureistic spacecraft that has been in the water for 300 years. You gotta read this book, baby!!!! Hi Mr. Beeman's class!!! =-)
Rating: Summary: Like a croissant - crummy and flaky Review: Michael Crichton is one of the most uneven authors around. Here he is at his most uneven. The storyline of Sphere starts out very well and then just.... fizzles out. The ending is extremely weak, almost annoying, and the book feels somewhat wasted.
Rating: Summary: forbidden planet / solaris redux Review: His worst book?, same plot as many other sci fi classics - humans encounter alien technology that makes their imagination come true, beware the dark side! Far better done by Stanislaus Lem. I've enjoyed his many other books, this one tops it all off with a feeble ending.
Rating: Summary: It's Real Sci-Fi... Review: *Sphere* is an incredible book, despite some of its limitations. The characters are not especially deep (par for the course Chricton) and this book is less a vehicle for education that most of his other works. Nor is it intended as an action-oriented thriller (though it has elements of that, if you want to emphasize them). What makes it incredible, in my view, is that it is very much in the category of "real Science Fiction." There is perhaps not enough technical material to interest most *Analog*-style sci-fi fans, but it does have one of the strong qualities of good sci-fi: it leaves you with questions. You start off exploring the space craft, but get side-tracked when things begin to get too dangerous. There are alot of things you learn about the ship, but more you don't. Perhaps the biggest complaint that could be levied against this book is how little the Sphere itself is explained, and how little sense it might make, perhaps. But this argument rather misses one of the main points: the incomrehensibility of "the alien." Building on Crichton's fascination with the concept of Chaos/Complexity, *Sphere* is, in fact, a portrait of people who are suddenly confronted with the realization that they are dealing with something totally beyond their experience.
If you take the time to consider that aspect and all its ramifications, this is actually quite a provocative and intriguing work. If you're looking for a heart-pounding supsense novel, or a compact story, or set of deep characters, you will probably be disappointed. But, like the characters in the book, you won't always have your expectations met...
Rating: Summary: GOOD AND FAST PACED CRICHTON!! Review: In a way, very typical crichton. A good plot but a lot of unanswered questions. If you have a good imagination you may like this book even better, but if you like neat tight fitting stories, sphere left me with a few questions. The book does make you think and does bring up some interesting points as most of crichton's book do. This should turn out to be a very good movie, there is no shortage of action, drama and tension.
Rating: Summary: If you enjoy Crichton, and can handle flat characters then.. Review: ... you have to read this! I never cared much for Crichton's flat characters but his stories and technical accuracy always kept me interested. This story is original and well written. This is one of the few books I read in one sitting... I just couldn't stop. Don't read this if you plan on seeing the movie, because after this book, the movie will not be able to even compare.
