Rating: Summary: This book was the best I've read in years . Review: I REALLY LOVE THIS BOOK. IT'S A HEARTBREAKING STORY TO BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY TREATED THAT BAD IN OUR SOCIETY. AND IT MAKES ME FEEL BAD THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS TO PUBLICALLY HUMILIATE THAT PERSON FOR THERE ON ENTERTAINMENT . THIS IS A GOOD BOOK. I WOULD RECCOMEND IT TO ANYONE.
Rating: Summary: A book to engraves in your memory Review: Flowers for Algernon, although a simple story writen through the simpleness of a adolecents mind, was able to convey overwhelmingly the will and courage of the human spirit. Flowers for Algernon travels through the mid life of Charlie Gordan, a retarded man, with the one wish of being smart, or in his words "like everyone else". He's motivation is rewarded when a promising new advance in science allows him to surgically compound his IQ. ..and when this new aquisition Charlie was able to soak up all the knowledge he had longed for. With his new mind, Charlie no longer sees the world through the mind of a 6 year old.. he realises the perfect world he always knew, was not so perfect anymore. He discovers the truth of who he is, and what is really significant in life. Not IQ or gift, but only love, goodness, and the will to succeed.

Rating: Summary: A great insight into intellectual ostracism Review: I found this story, which I read as part of a collection of stories in a college literature book, to be a fascinating account of how the highly intelligent are just as isolated from 'the rest of the world' as the mentally retarded. Charlie Gordon had no more in common with 'regular people' at the low IQ end than he did at the high IQ end. His keen perception into the maltreatment of a retarded man, while his intellect was at its peak, and public scolding of those who participated in it, reminded me of one thing I've personally observed: the highly intelligent appear to have more in common with mentally retarded people than they do with 'the public at large'. Both the retarded and the genius are equally shunned and despised.
Rating: Summary: This is a brilliant book! Review: i had to read this book for school but since then i have read it 5 times. It is about a surgery preformed on a retarded man call charlie. He makes friends with a mouse called Algernon. He is not smart and makes a lot of spelling mistakes. He slowly goes back to normal.. I won't tell you the rest. but i reccomend you read it.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding human experiment! Review: The title of this book is Flowers for Algernon. Now you are probably asking yourself who the heck is Algernon. Well, I'll tell you. Algernon is a brilliant mouse. He was part of an experimnt to increase the intelligence of an animal run by Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur, two scientists at Beekman University. After they successfully increased the intelligence of Algernon, they wanted to use a human test subject. So from Ms. Kinnian's class at the Beekman College Center for Retarded Adults, the two scientists selected Charlie Gordon. Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur told Charlie that they were going to preform an operation which would make him smarter. This apealed to Charlie because he had been trying to be smart all his life. The entire book is written from Charlie's piont of view. He is telling you, the reader, what is happening to him through the progress reports that he's required to write from the time right before the operation until the end. As you are reading, you can recognize the fact that he is obtaining more intelligence. You can literally see him change in the way he composes his progress reports. From cover to cover, this is a tear-jerking and mind-boggling book. Charlie make you feel sad when people belittle him and makes you hate him when he is being selfish and self-centered. Charlie, most of the time, understands what is happening to him. This is a great book. I would hightly recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: A Tear Jerker Review: Flowers for Algernon is one of the best books I have ever read. It is about a man named Charlie who is retarted. He wants to get smart by having an operation in hope to get friends. After the operation he goes from a 68 IQ to a 180 IQ. He becomes smart, but finds he still has the same emotions as he always had. The lab mouse that the expirement went on first dies after becoming erratic. Charlie finds out that he will become erratic soon too. Daniel Keyes ends with the words: "Please put some flowrs on Algernons grave in the bak yard". I would recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: About as realistic as a sci-fi drama can be Review: Flowers for Algrenon is a sci-fi drama about a dumb man who becomes a genius after an operation and relizes he was better off before and when the operation wears off he wishes to be smart again. It is a wonderful story and I would recomend it to anyone,
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I've ever read Review: I read this story in high school and I remembered it well through the years. Later, when I was out of college and working, I read it again. The most painful thing must be when you mind goes. Later, I wrote a book, Paralegal Guide to Intellectual Property. After writing non-fiction, I would like to try my hand at writing fiction. Flowers for Algernon inspired me to become a writer, though I'm not sure I will be as talented as Daniel Keyes at mixing emotion with intelligence in telling this heart wrenching story.
