Summary: A touching story revealing the true value of innocence
Review: In this touching story revealing the true value of innocence, Daniel Keyes attempts to show the reader just how precious and delicate childhood can be.At the age of 33, protagonist Charlie Gordon has both the intellectual and emotional maturity of a teenager, until he is recommended for an experimental operation, by his reading teacher. Being eager, and practically yearning for the opportunity to be smart like other people, Charlie is exhilirated when he finds out he can undergo the operation. Yet his results are far from anyone's expectations, especially his own. Although at first his progress seems frustratingly slow,it soon excells and reaches its zenith. Now a genius,Charlie Gordon faces resentment from everyone, and realizes that being smarter than his doctors isn't all its cracked up to be. Yet even though his dreams have been fulfilled, he faces many struggles. From his past to his current uneasiness about women, Charlie realizes that even though his I.Q. has tripled, emotionally he is still lags very far behind. Through Charlie's eccentric relationships and child-like characteristics, the reader experiences the rebirth of a man,.... and his destruction, all by the same force. We see that as Charlie's emotions mature and expand through interacting with Algernon his pet mouse, and his love Alice, he is being jaded at the same time by the reality... and cruelty of the world. After a life-altering incident, Charlie's world begins to spiral down, deteriorationg his mind and dreams. He decides to sacrifice himself for all the Charlie's of the world, in the most saddening and heart breaking way. Yet even though he slowly slips back to his old self, and experiences the seemingly trivial troubles of remembering who he is, he never forgets Algernon; the only living thing in the world that knows exactly how he feels.

Summary: A reccomendable book
Review: I had first read the short version of this book and I liked it a lot so, when I saw it on a list of books that I had to read for a summer assingment to get into H.S.I didn't even glance at the other books on the list.I kind of regret doing that because I find it hard to review this book since in some parts Charley just starts to say these things that don't make any sense, but anyway this is a good book and I would reccomend it to anybody, EXEPT the people who have to do a report on it.

Summary: Great story
Review: "That that is is that that is not is not is that it it is" Charley

This is a wonderful story and I had the pleasure of working with Cliff Robertson and Claire Bloom on the slide and carosel scenes of Charley in 1967 (at Pleasure Island in Wakefield, MA). I hear Mr. Robertson is going to do Charley II, soon. I'd love to do it again!
