Rating: Summary: Flowers For Algernon; The Real Deal Review: This novel had the potential to be an excellent book. Unfortunately the author did not use it all. As you start the novel you are refreshed by the reading a new plot which is not already a cliché. This novel is about a young retarded man who is given a chance to increase his intelligence through medical means. And as he takes his risk not only does he become much smarter he discovered secrets in his past. As he's learning to live with himself he becomes arrogant and self-involved And this is were the author lost my interest. I thought the beginning was great but as it developed it started to become repetitive and frustrating. The author had no means of showing Charlie (the main character) what life is really about. He doesn't talk about how one notices the human species characteristics as we grow different they are in real life than in our heads. He doesn't believe in communication, or in, acceptance (which is very annoying for the reader). You learn to see Charlie become obsessive on problems until you feel like yelling at him. This book was not the greatest, but the beginning does make you think for a while.
Rating: Summary: As touching as Forest Gump Review: When I started reading this book it caught my attention really fast. All the way to the end I wanted too know what would happen to Charlie. Charlie was born retarded which we later find out by his memories of the past. I loved the way the author described those memories and feelings. The relation in between the characters are very special and make the book touching at times or harsh. A lot of emotions are presented to you in the book especially anger. It's a must read book!
Rating: Summary: The Algernon Effect Review: Flowers for Algernon is a great book that combines both science fiction and everyday life events together. It is interesting how the characters thoughts and feelings change throughout the story. This book can lecture you on how to be a better person and to be careful what you wish for because it could be the complete opposite of what you thought it would be like. The story lets you compare between the intellectual and the not bright people. It is a good book to read that will change your mind about some things in life.
Rating: Summary: Overall a great book Review: I believe that Flowers for Algernon was a compelling and well-written novel by Daniel Keyes. This book talks about the realities of life and how poorly we treat mentally disabled people. It is true that most of the time we don't think of them as real people who have emotions also. Maybe not the same emotions, but they have emotions. I truly enjoyed reading this novel and I would definitely read it again. In some parts of this novel I became frustrated with the characters, but I was never bored. I never wanted to put it down because there were always compelling facts to keep me reading. Overall I think that this is a perfect book for teachers to assign to their students because everybody will be satisfied.
Rating: Summary: Not my favorite... Review: Although Flowers for Algernon was a well-written, creative book, it was definitely not one of my favorites. The way that the book was written through progress reports and entirely from Charlie's point of view was very interesting, yet somewhat confusing. The idea of the story, a retarded man gaining intelligence through futuristic surgery and writing of the experience, was great. What I think the problem was that the idea didn't really develop the way it should have; many of the characters as well as events were described very vaguely, and that confused me. What this book didn't have was the ability to keep me wondering; I really had no desire to pick up the book and keep on reading, and I probably wouldn't have if the book had not been assigned to me in English class. The point is, I did enjoy the book to some extent, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone nor would I ever read it again.
Rating: Summary: Is this book worth Reading, I think not. Review: The book, Flowers for Algernon, was not what I expected it to be. The book started out well with details and background information, which made me get interested in it. As soon as I reached where the operation happened, I did not want to finish the book. Maybe the book is considered bad by some people because it is nothing like or near our current technology. If a book with the same plot as this on was currently made, it would be more interesting. The book could have been fewer pages and would be better and more concise. Much of the book included pointless scenes and parts where one would get tired and fall asleep. It has good ideas and much potential but it is definitely not what a good book is like. I wish the book had more problems and they were solved rather than being longer and not as good. One of the big problems I had with the book, Flowers for Algernon, is that it never fallowed through with its ideas. For example, the part where his co-workers at the bakery make fun of him when he is retarded, they do not accept him during his intelligence period, and they completely defend him when he becomes intelligent. The writer never explain why this happens and pointlessly rambles on about them during the bakery scenes, but this eventually led to nothing but a longer book. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless they like old-fashion books about science fiction. I believe this book is senselessly long and not useful. It is badly written and would not catch my interest. I read it only because I was forced to.
Rating: Summary: Flowers For Algernon Review: Flowers For Algernon is written by Daniel Keyes and tells the story of Charlie Gordon, a retarded man who has an operation to try to make him smarter. The doctor who is in charge of this operation is Dr. Strauss. Dr. Strauss is very important to this book because he is the man who keeps up with Charlie's health, and tracks his progress by performing tests very often. The test is a sucess. Charlie, once a retarded man who could not read, write, or even think the way that most people could, over a long period of time, became a very intelligent man who has the knowledge of any person he comes in contact with. A very interesting and emotional event that occured in this book was when Charlie returned to the bakery, the place where Charlie had been working a long time before his operation. When he returned to meet his old friends, they were extremely suprised about how much Charlie had changed. He could now be accepted as a normal person, as oppopsed to before, when everyone looked at him and thought he was very different. I would definatley recommend this book to any person. It is pretty easy to understand and there is not a time when you want to put down the book because it is boring. This book can be read at any age level, and any person can enjoy reading a novel about a man who changed his whole life around.
Rating: Summary: This is what I call a real book! Review: This book is about a man call Charlie Gordon, who wanted to be intelligent because he was mentally challange. When he finally got smart he realizes that being smart is not everything. And that sometimes life is better as it is. i recomendet because si a book witch helps you think that there are many people who just wish to have half of the happines you have. IS worth to read!.
Rating: Summary: You must read it. Review: This intriguing book about human intelligence and its manipulation shows the problems of changing nature's gifts. By reading it you'll find the keys to friendship and self-esteem between individuals that think quite differently. It was very exciting and convincing. You'll cry reading it and won't put it down. The end makes you want to read it again. I would recommend it to everybody.
Rating: Summary: a must read for a teacher Review: I really enjoyed how this book let you look into his life like you are loking through a window into his life. but yet you feel like you where there with him. It is a must read fro teachers exp. special ed teachers.
