Summary: Fascinating, Touching, and Hard To Put Down
Review: This is one of the most unique books I have ever read. The touching story pulls in the reader-they get interested in Charlie's life and find the book hard to put down. It is remarkable to watch Charlie's progress through the increasing complexity of his progress reports, and, eventually, the downward spiral. Although the book is ultimately touching, it is sad at times. The parts where he is being picked on by people while at the same time thinking they are being nice to him will surely jerk a tear or two from most people. This is one of those rare works of art that can make you cry, laugh, and smile all within the context of the same book. A highly recommended literary masterpiece.

Summary: MOVING AND THOUGHT PROVOKING...
Review: This is a wonderful and highly original novel about a mentally challenged man named Charlie who wanted to be smart. One day, his wish was granted. A group of scientists selected him for an experimental operation which would to raise his intelligence to genius level. Suddenly, Charlie found himself transformed, and life, as he knew it, changed.

His story is told entirely through Charlie's eyes and perceptions in the form of progress reports. The reader actually sees the change in Charlie take place, as his progress reports become more complex, well written, and filled with the angst of personal discovery and growth, as well as with his gradual awareness of his amazing and accelerated intellectual development.

The progress reports are a wonderful contrivance for facilitating the story, and the reader is one with Charlie on his voyage of self-discovery. What happens to Charlie in the long run is profoundly moving and thought provoking. It is no wonder that this author was the recipient of the Nebula Award which is given by the Science Fiction Writers of America for having written the Best Novel of the Year. This is definitely a book well worth reading.

Summary: One of the best.....
Review: When I was in the eighth grade, my English teacher made us read the novella version of "Flowers for Algernon" After reading it, and watching both movie versions, we realized it truly was a spectacular story. The ending brings tears to your eyes, even if you have never cried. To all interested in works of literary genius, I strongly recommend the book "Flowers for Algernon" and, if possible the movie version ("Charly").

Summary: Poetic, Tragic, Amazingly Beautiful
Review: What would it be like to possess all you ever wished for, only to have it taken away? The quote from Plato's Republic at the beginning of the book sums up the whole of the story. Charlie came out of the darkness with bewildered eyes, bewildered because he was unaccustomed to the light. Charlie fell back into the darkness with bewildered eyes, bewildered because he was unaccustomed to the dark. Was it worth it? That is the question we are left with at the end of the book. It is not an easy question. Keyes shows us all of Charlie's experiences, shows us his soul, and leaves it up to us to decide. This philosophical dilemma is the core of the story. And it leaves you debating with yourself. There are convincing arguments for both sides. But no matter which opinion you hold, you can feel nothing but love for the character of Charlie. Pity you never feel, it is too low an emotion to give to this brave soul. No matter what IQ Charlie has at any point in the story, you only feel love for him. And when you weep it is not out of pity but out of sadness and grief for you know that if faced with this situation you would have gone mad long before. Keyes does not only give us a truly great story, he gives us a truly great character which, if the world is wise, will not be forgotten.

Summary: A Perfect and Touching Tale
Review: I first read the novelette Flowers for Algernon in 1979. It was a deeply moving and touching story of Charlie Gordon and his attempt to become smart. The book follows the same story line as the novelette, while adding details about Charlie's family, psyche, etc. This is a fascinating look at the human soul, and at society and how it treats the inferior and the superior. Charlie experiences both, in a tragic tale that I will long remember.

Summary: Awesome
Review: This book is so deep and so wonderful. Don't just listen to me - Flowers For Algernon won both the Hugo and Nebula award and it is taught in U.S Schools. It has been reprinted every year since 1959.

There is profound, multi-dimensional insight through many different aspects of existence. Intelligence, the caring professions, academia, businesses, the arts, and such.

I won't spoil the experience by telling people about Keyes' conceptions and ideas. This book is very moving. It can be sad and painful. It is always thought-provoking and emotional. There is great clarity, and the story is told in only 200 odd pages. You may be staying up the night reading it.

Criticisms? There is talk of sideswipes at the scientists here, or attacks on Charlie's attitudes to women. This book makes no simple attacks. Most characters and concepts amply portray positive and negative sides. The middle-section is quite strung out. That's a fault. But it doesn't really detract from the overall brilliance here.

Read this. I expect you will love it. It is a classic.
