Summary: What an idea!
Review: Written with style and grace of language, Turtledove's books rival the best of present-day historical fiction. I'm a big fan of current 90's style best sellers like 'The Triumph and the Glory' and 'War of the Rats', but also like alternate history epics and 'Guns of the South' certainly qualifies as an epic in that genre. The storytelling is first-rate, the characters memorable, and the concept intriguing.

Review: Very well written. Once again, Turtledove draws you into the action by allowing you to experience the big picture through his characters. I don't read as much fiction as I used to but Turtledove makes me want to spare the time . . .

Review: 1ST OF ALL, MAY I EDUCATE YOU?BEING FROM A "LONG LINE OFSOUTHERN HERITAGE", THE CIVILWAR WAS NOT STARTED BECAUSE OFSLAVERY, IT WAS STARTED BECAUSE OF TAXATION & HIGH TARIFFS.ONLY 1 IN 18 SOUTHERNERS OWNEDSLAVES, AND EVEN IF THE "SOUTH" WOULD HAVE WON THE WAR,SLAVERY WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY ABOLISHED AS IF YOUWILL CHECK, IT WAS BEING DONEAWAY WITH BY SOME GREAT MEN OF THE SOUTH EVEN BEFORE THE WARSTARTED.SLAVERY IS "SINFUL" & WHAT ABOUT THE "NORTHERNERS" WHOOWNED THEMSELVES "SLAVES" & THAT EVERY "SLAVE" THAT WASBROUGHT INTO THIS COUNTRY WASBROUGHT IN BY "YANKEE CLIPPERSHIP" INTO THE NEW ENGLAND STATES & THEN WAS SOLD ON THEAVERAGE TO ANYONE "YANKEES"INCLUDED WHO WANTED TO PURCHASE THEM AT $1000.00 A HEAD.WHY DID "PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN" HAVE MORE RELATIVESFIGHT FOR THE SOUTH, THAN THENORTH? Summary: The best alternate history I've ever read!
Review: My mother, who doesn't read "books like that," recommended this novel to me. She told me it was excellent. 30 hours later, the novel slipped from my nerveless fingers and I blinked my red eyes. This book will possess you until you finish it. And, even if you don't like "that kind of book," believe me and my mother, you'll love this one.

Review: This is by far and away Turtledove's best work. If you're looking for a bit of History with a twist I strongly suggest you pick this book up. If you're a fan of Turtledove and haven't read it yet, why not??

Summary: I thought American History was dry, but.....
Review: This book was wonderful, I found the book spellbinding and captivating. It changed my entire out look on American History. I am a student, majoring in history, and feel that every student should read this book, it changed my opinion... it makes you thankful that things turned out the way they did and leaves you standing beside yourself, I could not put the book down!!!!!

Review: An absolutely fascinating account of what might have happened if time travelers armed the Confederacy with AK-47s, thus changing the flow of history and determining the victory of the South over the North in the Civil War. Harry Turtledove spins a mesmerizing tale that kept me at the edge of my seat. His meticulous historical research and dazzling imagination came to life in this marvelous novel.

Review: The Guns of the South is a fascinating journey through an alternative past, filled with a multitude of what-if's. Of recent war fiction novels, only The 13th Valley and The Triumph and the Glory can contend with Turtledove's epic book.

Review: I did enjoy reading about how the yankees got beat int this novel. However, I do not believe the "Rivington" men would have liked what they found when they got to the 1860s. There many blacks, some slave and some free, whom couragously went and fought with the South during the War Between the States. There was only one black Confederate metioned in this book. Also General Forrest was made out to be a slave monger and in actual history he was not even a racist. As I said before the book was good but had the acutal history been seriously considered it would have been alot better
