Summary: This book was a page turner,
Review: I throughly enjoyed this book more than his first installment in the World War series, it was a joy to read and actually got me hooked on the "true" history of the Civil War. It was also the motivator behind my trying to find a copy of David Poyer's "The Shiloh Project" and has led me to want to read such books as "Cold Mountain" and the two Civil War novels by Harold Coyle. Turtledove is in my "pantheon" along with Cussler, Clancy, (Wm.) Gibson, Philp K. Dick and Heilein. I am hoping that soemday someone in Hollywood makes this into a movie. It has potential.

Summary: I was captivated, what a story!
Review: What a great work....why haven't they made a movie out of this...Im ready to buy tickets to the premier

Summary: It's Not Just a war story!
Review: Harry Turtledove was a professor of history at UCLA, and his deep knowledge of history shows in this book. It is a snappin' good yarn, but also offers a LOT of insight into why the Civil War was fought, and into the minds of abolitionists and slaveholders. Highly recommende

Summary: A good look at what the South might have been.
Review: Once again Turtledove takes us throught the looking glass and helps us to see what might have happened, if only history didn't happen! As always Turtledove's research is well done and by removing one of the weakest parts of the South's stratgey, lack of weapons, he allows us to see what the south might have become. It's not what you would think. The portrayal of camp life, battle and the difficulty of men returning from war is esspecially well written. For me though, it was the politics that was particularly gripping. In the book as in real life slavery was on the way out. The radical factions that are portrayed by both the South Africans and the hard line Southerners show us just how nasty prejudice is. Lee becomes President after Davis and is bent on instituting reforms that the hard liners and their future supporters are determined to stop. Turtledoves portrial of Lee is well done. He handles Lee in such a manner that you feel as if you knew him personally. Lee is not the confused, dazed nor indecisive man as portrayed in " The Killer Angels ". All in all this book is one of Turtledoves best and a must read for alternate history and Civil War buffs.

Summary: A novel for both the science fiction reader and historian
Review: Right Wing South African extremists steal a time machine and travel to Civil War America, and introduce to the "Rebels" the magic of AK-47s, instant coffee and the Macintosh computer! The characters, fictional and historical, come alive in this captivating novel where the south gained its independence through superior weaponry and knowledge.

As in his World War series, Harry Turtledove places historical personalities in surreal situations. General Lee, plagued with heart problems, strives to fight in the best interests of the Confederacy; General Grant is defeated, yet ambitious and thirsty for victory; Brig. Nathaniel Forrest, an anti-semite but loyal to his country, takes up weapons against a former ally when the unthinkable happens.

As always, this book is full of action and the battles are truly memorable. This book is an excellent read for both the Science Fiction reader and historian!

Summary: An excellent alternate history and much more...
Review: This is much more than an alternative version of history with the South winning the civil war. It is an insightful vision of how such a victory might have changed the thinking of the Southern leaders and people. This novel is a fine example of how science fiction can be an avenue to a more profound understanding of the human condition. The historical characters are alive here, the period rich in detail and accurate. Thougtful, moving, and very well written, this what all alternative histories should aspire to. Turtledove is often a disappointment. Guns of the South, however, is his finest book yet and perhaps the best of this gendre to be written thus far

Summary: REVOLUTIONARY!!!
Review: The South wins the civil war, but it leads to many conflicts about the question of slavery. This books examines the real meaning of why the civil war was fought and the consequences of southern independence. An excellent book for civil war "buffs" and for "alternative" history readers

Summary: Historical Fiction with just a twist of Science Fiction.
Review: This is a truly enjoyable and thought provoking text in which Harry Turtledove blends the two seemingly incongruous genres of Science Fiction and Historical Fiction. Turtledove does a superb job of using the Science Fiction as an aid to alter history and describe people and reasoning behind the behavior of the South, during the Civil War, in very human terms. By providing the mechanism (the AK47) by which Robert E. Lee and his army is able to rebuff the Northern invasion, Turtledove provides a unique perspective on the social, political and economic mores of the Southern United States in the 1860's. In a pure historical telling, the facts of the story would bury the color and texture of the human drama. In a pure historical fiction, our understanding of the history of the time would block our ability to see the strengths and weaknesses of the people and organizations. The use of Science Fiction allows us to suspend our knowledge and makes the reader open to a very different view of motivations and reactions than history attributes to the South as an attempt at Nation and Southerners as individuals. The tale is told so believably that this is definitely one of the best science or historical fiction books I have ever read.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Civil War SF. Must Have.
Review: Without giving away the richness of this book, Turtledove, sets an alternate history story in the Civil War and asks: "What if?". Then he has to come up with a plausible mechanism for the alternate history to come about and then deal with the repercussions of his ideas. Because of his history background and his writing skill this is a very enjoyable story. Warning! If you read this book: You will pursue other Turtledove stories (such as the WorldWar series).
