Summary: A great read, especially for Civil War buffs.
Review: I was a little wary of this book when a friend recommended it to me. Even though I'm a lifelong Southerner (with roots here that run back to the 1700s - I ain't from carpetbagger stock), I'm not the sort who nurses a permanent grudge against Yankees, and who's just itchin' for a rematch. But I went with my friend's suggestion, and I was pleasantly surprised. This really is a terrific book. If you're looking for a hard scientific look at time-travel, you'd best look elsewhere - the time-travel in this book is just an excuse to provide the South with a means for winning the Civil War. The rest of the book is a thoroughly researched, entertaining work of "alternate history," which will also give readers a good sense of the politics and personalities that were at work during this period of history. Civil War buffs should love it. A great, fun book. I highly recommend it.

Summary: This is Turtledove's Masterpiece!
Review: An excellent, intriguing combination of history and science fiction. A group of South African time travelers supply General Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia with AK-47s and the eventual means for victory. And that's just in the first half of the book. What happens over the next four years to the CSA is excellently crafted. The issue of slavery is at the forefront, and Lee's thoughts on it bring him into conflict with many, including the South Africans.

Turtledove brilliantly captured the time. General Lee's meetings with Abraham Lincoln, General Grant after the war, and General Nathan Bedford Forest (especially that one!) are classic. His research into life in the 1860s, and into all the historical characters, was remarkable. Even though this is a work of fiction, it is a wonderful study into the character of General Robert E. Lee.

Summary: A very impressive perspective.
Review: I've had this book for several years and I must say that the few times I attempted to read it, I couldn't really get into it. Once I started though, I really started enjoying it and then got really caught up into it. I'm not a big fan of the Civil War, but after this book, I have new found respect for the war. I have found myself looking for books about the war, and I have since bought a second Turtledove book (How Few Remain, a sequel) and I am looking forward to reading it.

Summary: The Shattered Brain-case of Courage...
Review: Plenty of action here for me, not necessarily in the vein of Stirling or Drake, but it makes Crane look tame.

As one raised to despise the Confederacy and all its works, I found the premise horrifying.

Still, Mr. Turtledove's portrait of Lee as a human being was exceptional. It gave me, as a devout Yankee, plenty of food for thought.

The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars was the time-travel premise. This is just a pet peeve of mine. Overall, the book is excellent.

Summary: Excellent Alternative History
Review: This is an excellent example of alternative history. Being a dedicated student of the Confederacy it is nice to read such a book as this. Thanks Mr. Turtledove.

Summary: Fascinating Alt-History; Fantasy plot device merely a set-up
Review: This book works very well as alternate history, despite the far-fetched fantasy plot device used to create the scenario. Obviously the author studied the historical figures involved and put some effort into working out their behavior. The action and fantasy elements are very much secondary to the character study of Robert E. Lee in an independent Confederacy.

While Lee's story is the main focus, there is a fair amount of setup action before the author reaches the meat of the book. If the reader makes his way through the war scenes, he will be rewarded with much more interesting and original material.

Don't expect much action or time travel- this is a talky story. There isn't much discussion of the time travel or future either. If you are interested in the character of Robert E. Lee and wonder how he might have affected events had the Confederacy won the Civil War, then you will probably be fascinated by this work. If you're looking for a slam-bang sci-fi story! ! , you'd best look elsewhere.

Summary: Good history, good story
Review: I found this to be a very well-grounded alternate history of the Civil War. Obviously Mr. Turtledove is very influenced by Bruce Catton's views but this does not detract from the successful representation of the political events. In other books the author is longwinded but this is an exception. Definitely worth the effort.

Summary: A Great Book of Alternate Civil War History!!
Review: Harry Turtledove has done a outstanding job with this novel, both interesting and exciting,I could not wait to find out what new course history would take,I only hope he will consider writing more novels of this time era that has so much impact upon Americans today.

Summary: first third was slow; last two thirds was fascinating
Review: This book is very clever and obviously well-thought out. Anyone who enjoys Civil War history or history of any kind would love this book. Even though the begginning is slow, it is worth reading through it for the rest of the book. Enjoy!@

Summary: A lot of fun to read!
Review: What I found most interesting about this book in addition to the fact that it gave a completely different ending to the Civil War, was how the author was able to really personalize the characters such as Robert Lee and Bedford Forest from historical figures to people whom we could identify with on a more personal level. This in itself made this book fun to read. I highly recommend it to anyone
