Rating: Summary: BOOOOOOOORRRRRING! Review: This is the most boring movie I have ever seen! Do yourself a favor and never see or buy this movie! I'm not kidding!
Rating: Summary: a classic must read for any SF fan Review: One of the best (and most realistic) first CONTACT(no pun) yarns ever written,,with wonderfully fleshed out characters(unlike the sterile Asimov and the ridiculously cartoonish Niven) without the sometimes overly mystical quliities of Clarke and Bradbury. A moving and touching capstone to the work of a true giant in the SETI field CONTACT is a paen to "hard" SF that speculates on the possible in the here and almost-now rather than the sometimes ridiculous space opera with mythical laser gun battles and aliens that speak perfect English. Reminiscent of Asimovs(un-Asimovian) The Gods Themselves and the recently published " A Quiet Invasion"
Rating: Summary: There is something special here Review: This film is deeply moving. Foster acts with sincerity, and the depth of character and thought in this film is truly unique. There are so many beautiful moments in this film. Oh, I agree with several of the reviewers who mentioned that the "alien encounter" near the end all but dripped with cliches, but that doesn't bother me. This movie isn't about the alien; this movie is about us. The scene in which Alloway looked out of the pod at that vast, beautiful scape--that was a very human moment. And the scene on the balcony, and the scene at the end, when the astronomer and the priest truly understand each other, and are connected--the clasping of hands there is so beautifully symbolic. I am rather disappointed at the number of negative reviews scattered below. I see a review from an empiricist who felt that the film was advocating "taking science on faith," and I see reviews from theists who feel that the movie was somehow anti-religion. I can only feel that these reviewers have misunderstood the film at the most fundamental level. First Contact is the first film I have ever seen that gave such an open-minded and compassionate treatment of both science and faith. The storywriters truly understood why empiricists and men of faith have seldom seen eye to eye. And they understood--and respected!--both men of faith and men of science. They even understood that science and faith don't have to be mutually exclusive. If science was not a crucial part of what it means to be human, then we would all be living in the woods, feasting on raw chipmunks for breakfast. If faith was not a crucial part of what it means to be human, then we would have no poets, no artists, no storytellers, no sculptors, and we would no doubt be living cold, precise, efficient, mathematical lives. Both the search for knowledge and the search for truth are part of what it means to be human. First Contact is not a film about scientists and priests. It is a film about human beings. As for myself, I am a Christian, and I have to say that First Contact was the best treatment in film of my faith and my view of life that I have ever seen. And frankly, if I were an atheist, I suspect I would feel the same way.
Rating: Summary: Overwhelming Review: Absslutely amazing video and sound quality, one just has to ask...If this is the quality you get on a dvd, what is George Lucas waiting for? Contact asks the second basic question of space exploration (The first being Are we alone?)What would a contact be like? Penned by Carl Sagan and his wife, the master direction of Zemeckis brings to life a space travel we have never seen and some exotic scenarios combined with real life locations make this movie very believable. The effects were done with great wizardy and if you turn your living room lights off while watching this, you will really feel like you're in deep space at times...Let your soul fly free, get this...
Rating: Summary: Smart, emotional, brilliant! Review: You'd have to be into that whole "thinking" thing to appreciate this movie. I was a little disappointed with the ending the first time I saw it, but after seeing it a few more times, it all began to snap together. This is NOT a cheap sci-fi B-movie that you can just half-watch and then go on with your life. It's one of those that you are thinking about long after, and it slowly begins to fit together. I didn't think that this movie was offensive. In fact, I felt somewhat spiritually empowered by it. One of the big messages in the movie is that faith is something that cannot be explained or proven, not even by science.
Rating: Summary: I wanted to like it. Review: "Contact" began with promise. The first 30-40 minutes told a compelling scientific detective story. I looked forward to seeing the science team interact, detect, and piece together the alien signals. Sadly, the intelligent characters were cast aside and the plot moved to Washington, D.C., not known as a mecca for bold, original thinkers. With all the richness and possibilities inherent in cinema, I was frustrated to witness so many scenes revolving around TV news screens and the lingering reaction shots of the cast. Great scientific discoveries were being made, but the director chose to show the characters having dull meetings and watching TV. "Contact" was weighed down by sappy music throughout. It wasn't possible to take "Contact" seriously after the tedious second act. The main character was diminished by the filmmakers' unimaginative reliance on crudely caricatured antagonists. The sets and special effects were well done, but there was no need to dwell on them. Big Moments happened every 7 minutes, and the story's power was diluted by the time Dr. Arroway began the space voyage. When there was no turning back and her face was at maximum contortion, I thought she finally understood the true meaning of the cryptic Vega message: It's a cookbook!
Rating: Summary: SUBLIME SPECTACLE Review: CONTACT is one of the most thoughtful and compelling science fiction films ever made. Everyone involved is working at the top of their game, from Zemeckis, who covered some of these ideas before in the delightfully silly BACK TO THE FUTURE series, to the performers, who are each exceptional and truly moving. Jodie Foster once again plays a loner, with a deep wound she must heal, and McCounaghey, who has never been more appealing, plays the insightful spiritual man who loves her. If you are looking for cheap thrills and lots of action, CONTACT is not necessarily your sci-fi; you will not be disappointed by the mind-boggling effects and surprisngly sublime alien encounter(s), but this movie has a lot more on its smart mind. The experience of CONTACT is emotional on every level, from the petty games people in power play, to the grief we feel over the loss of loved ones, to the difficulty each of us has in making that one true connection with someone we love. I for one cannot get enough of CONTACT. One for the ages.
Rating: Summary: The Commentaries Make This DVD GREAT! Review: The movie is already incredible to watch. Listening to Jodie and others tell you the details of each shot and how things were done to accomplish this movie make it fun and interesting. The weather, Jodie's bumps and bee stings, Carl Sagan's advice and the clarity on scientific detail are all discussed. It sheds new light on the movie and respect for the work done.
