Rating: Summary: this was a very mind-catching book. Review: it was interesting how he put in the original version then the edited version. i recommend this book for ages 12 +.
Rating: Summary: Mi è piaciuto moltissimo. Review: Leggete questo libro se volete scoprire un mondo magico, pieno di meravigliose avventure.
Rating: Summary: Not a review of lost books... Review: The Book of Lost Tales 1 is certainly not a lost book. Although the prose may sometimes be quite confusing, not to mention the subject matter, it is nonetheless a very intriguing book. It sheds light to the spark that created the conflagration that is now the entire Middle-Earth legacy. If you truly wish to unravel the history of Middle-Earth, this book is one of the tools to do so. Enjoy reading this book and the secrets it contains.
Rating: Summary: Behind the Scenes of Tolkien's Work Review: The Book of Lost Tales shows you what wasn't included in the Silmarillion as well as some completely new stories, such as that of Eriol who learns of the origins of the Elves from his kinsmen. This shows you what Tolkien was conjuring up in the trenches during World War I. It's not really for those who are stuck only to the writing style of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You have to read the Silmarillion first before you can completely appreciate this work.
Rating: Summary: The primal building blocks of Middle Earth. Review: The Books of Lost Tales 1 and its subsequent sequels are the collections of stories from the early twentieth century by JRR Tolkien that were later refined into The Silmarillion which was then refined further into The Lord of the Rings. Although several details are different, it is very easy to see in these stories the building blocks of Middle Earth and indeed the very progenitor of modern fantasy. Don't, however, expect highly structured, memorable, or even easy to understand stories, for most of them were rough drafts written by Tolkien in his early journals and collected decades later by his son who tried very hard to make them readable. Not for anybody who fear literary disorganization and confusion.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: The first item in 'History of Middleearth' is an exciting Book and very wonderful to read but U should have read the Silmarillion first and had to be interessted in Middleearth. And when, then you'll love it.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful but dense Review: The writing is beautiful but it's sometimes tough going. Unlike the Hobbit and LOTR, where the hobbits brought the ideas down to earth, this book is all "high fantasy." It's easy to get lost here.
Rating: Summary: Yessesse sanaron Review: These books are the story of the Days of the beginning (Yessesse sanaron) before LOTR or the hobbit. For those who love the world that Tolkien pants for us, you will love these books. But they are not for everyone, I gave this a four out of five not because it was a poor book, but because of its limited appeal as compared to that of the more popular works by Tolkien. A great choice if you thrust for more of what Tolkien offers.
Rating: Summary: If you're a Tolkien fan, this book is for you Review: This book gives further insight into the world that Tolkien created over the course of fourty years. While less coherent than the Hobbit+LOTR, I still recommend it heartily. After all, these are Lost Legends, as you might hear around a fire, so of course they're not as detailed or consistent. You should read the Trilogy first, though. Also quite good was the Book of Lost Tales 2. I found this easier to read than the Silmarillion, which I would only give four stars. Excellent.
Rating: Summary: "The Book of Lost Tales", a second "Silmarillion"? Review: This book gives great insight to Tolkiens first ideas of Middle-Earth, the first ideas of Orcs, Elves, Balrogs, Valar and Ents. The seafarer Ælfwine (or Eriol, his name given by the Elves), comes upon the Elven island Tol Eressea, where he finds the city of Kortirion and the friendly elves Vaire and Lindo, who gives him a place to sleep and rest for several days. On the island his great lust for seafaring ceases, and he starts to learn the true story of the World from the Elves. He is told about the great Valar, the terrible Morgoth, the glory of the Early Days, and of the highest himself: Eru Iluvatar.
This is a magnificent work which combines Tolkien's magic of writing with a anazing mytology, simply a masterwork, yes i would say a second Silmarillion
