Reading Islandia didn't exactly turn me into a Luddite, but over the years the story comes to mind during stressful times. I believe it has influenced my habit of going off to small islands to think over big decisions.

I did not read Islandia until my late 20's, but I think it has something to share no matter when you discover it. Another book I discovered much earler (age 12) was Lost Horizon, by James Hilton. Similar themes, different decisions, different results....
