Rating: Summary: Brooks needs to get a life Review: Terry Brooks hopped on the Tolkein fantasy badwagon in the seventies, one of the first truly copycat writers to do so. Since then, fantasy authors like Jordan and Silverberg, Feist and Bradley, have largely succeeded in exploring new realms and systems, new races and generally developing new ideas--all except Brooks. He struck gold with the first book and has been milking that vein ever since. As an author Brooks in not utterly without talent, though that talent is still largely undeveloped after all these years. The world of Shannara didn't have the depth of Tolkein's to begin with, and has long since run dry. Mr. Brooks should either get off the teat and write something new, or he should retire this series and live off the royalties.
Rating: Summary: one with the adventure Review: Terry Brooks is such a great author! i've read all the other Shannara books, and sadly, i'm almost done with this one...the last. I commend him most for his abitily to draw you into the story and make you seemingly intimately part of the cast of characters. I wept like a baby when Tay died. (fingers crossed) i hope he writes more, like about Walker Boh and the new Druids etc.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! Review: This book was great! This was the first Shannara book I've read and it was a great way to get into the series knowing what the wars and battles signified. I am only 14 and I loved it! I have read the Heritage of Shannara too. I am now beginning to read the Sword of Shannara. Just outstanding!
Rating: Summary: One of the best yet . . . Not THE best . . . but. . . Review: This book tells the tail of how the Sword of Shannara was made, and how Shannara failed to use it the first time in the battle with the Warlock Lord. It was one of the best books I have ever read, but Mr. Brooks has done better (ex. Sword of Shannara, and Tailismans of Shannara), but it ranks THIRD in my Shannara list. A MUST READ for anyone reading the Shannara saga!!
Rating: Summary: It was an EXCELLENT novel of magic and ancient lore. Review: Terry Brooks has a wonderful style of narrative. If you have read his other series (Shannara series, Herritage series, and the Magic Kingdom for Sale, SOLD! series) then this is a definate long awaited work. Not only can Brooks take you back to the time of ancient lore, he gives you an adventure you won't forget. This book in particular takes you back before the Shannara series begins, though it was written after the fact. I highly recommend this book for the Fantasy genre type reader. It is less Sci-fi then his time-warping Magic Kingdom series, more along the lines of fantastical imagery. Give it a try, you won't regret it!
Rating: Summary: the warlock lord is trying to be kept from taking over. Review: I think that this book is a good mixture of tolkien's books and classic fantasy. brooks writes well enough that you feel like you are there living it with the characters. Bremen is an awesome character to put in this book and you will find yourself rooting for him and kinson the whole time. this is the first book by brooks that i have read. it ranks right up there with robert jordan and j.r.r. tolkien in by book.
Rating: Summary: book i've been waiting for! Review: finnally the story of the sword has been writen. i could hardly put it down, and eagerly await the next book in the series.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as the sword Review: This was a good book, don't get me wrong, but it not quite as good as the sword of shannara. My favorite part is the battle for the Rhenn, that is the greatest battle scenes of any of the books.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting and exciting! A winner no doubt! Review: Brooks best yet since is first novel "Sword of Shannara" published in 1977. Brooks does a fantastic job in describing the book and it's characters. He pulls you into the book so you become the character. I have been a fan of the Shannara and Landover books since I first put my hands on the "Sword of Shannara" and it's beautifully written piece and now I have been lucky enough to add "First King of Shannara" to my bookcase. He knows how to enchant you and excite you so you're always wanting more and when you're finished you want to read it again. He is a exceptionally talented writer and may his work be honored in the hands of the human race for years to come!
Rating: Summary: First King is good - but not his best Review: Terry Brooks is a masterful writer, that cannot be denied. His previous work, especially in this series, is outstanding. However, this book never seemed to hook me the way the others did. It is a solid tale, but holds few surprises and as a prelude to the others in the series, it's ending is essentailly known to all but first time readers. While the story was a bit of a rehash of old material with a few extra details, Brooks does a fairly good job of keeping it interesting. I recommend this book, but I would also advise you read his others as well as they are of better quality.
