Summary: Not as good as the first two in the series, but I'm hooked!
Review: Again, if you haven't read at least the first book (Atlantis) of this series, do not start with this one or you will only feel frustrated. I find the plot of this one a little repetitive of the second book (Bermuda Triangle) and it is especially obvious in the first half of the plot development. Now we know that the "Shadow" had always been there but in every generation there were some people who could defeat it. The story does get better towards the end with some new twists. It seems like the author was saving those "special effects" for later and then found himself running out of time so he had to use them up all at once. Oh well, I'm hooked on this series nonetheless and I will definitely read the 4th one. I want to know who are the "Ones Before" on the other side!

Summary: A tense thriller; gripping and hard to put down
Review: Devil's Sea: Atlantis is the third novel in a series about other-dimensional beings attacking Earth through gateways also stands well alone for newcomers, providing swift action and drama which blends elements of science fiction and horror with intrigue and espionage. Chapters move between past and present as they explore a Naval effort to combat the beings from another world. A tense thriller; gripping and hard to put down.

Review: Each book in this series add new charactors to keep the storyline complete. Also every book updates you on past books. This is one the best series I have ever read. You don't want to put it down until you have finished the book.

Summary: Again: excellent!
Review: I agree with one of the other critics: Greg Donegan is an expert when it comes to plots. This book is a real pageturner again and it kept me hooked from the first to the last page. The characters of Dane, Foreman et al. remain consistent in their presentation and have kept up our interest now for three books. And I want to read more. I disagree with the same critic when he or she says there should be a real ending to the book. Unlike in other stories where authors and/or editors try to lengthen stories by postponing the final showdown or solution to another book this novel has an ending. Most of the main characters have served their purposes and the battle has been fought - for now. But not the war! Like in the real world we will have to wait. Fighting this enemy cannot be solved in 300 pages. There must be another novel here. And I am waiting for it.

I again liked the fine mixture of fantasy and SF, both the modern world and the ancient worlds fighting the same allegoric war against possible extinction of the world that has been threatening mankind, the world, species for as long as life has existed. And of course the well researched historical parts are very attractive, but I liked the way the author treated the modern world that is lacking the superstitions of the ancient times and with its insistence on facts. These people are able to explain some of the physical background of the threat, but like the scientifically illiterate ancient people, they do not understand the threatening powers at all. Nothing has changed. Man has remained the same throughout the ages.

We are looking forward to the sequel.

Summary: A completely enjoyable jaunt
Review: I am reading the series and just finished this one (#3) last night--in one sitting! Not that it is short at 295 pages, but that it is so captivating it's hard to put it down.

Is it farfetched--yes, but the presentation is such that I found myself accepting the story line and even found it plausible...now that is good writing! To those who have written in their reviews that some elements of fantasy have been added to a science fiction/action story, well, let's remember that this is fiction! It's purpose is to entertain. Judging by the success of this series, I'd say the author has accomplished that end very successfully!

The characterization is good for an action thriller. The story line is the strong point of this book. I found it impossible not to anticipate with enthusiasm every revelation about the nature of the gates, the shadow, and "the ones before."

Emily Dickenson once said, "What a frigate is a book!" I agree. A good book is like a mini-vacation. Devil's Sea was an especially exciting escape from the world, and I heartily recommend it! I now have it listed for sale in the used book Amazon Marketplace, so that someone else might enjoy it!

Summary: Not beleivable
Review: I could not get past page 27. Mr. Donegan used facts and they are wrong. When he is talking about the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, he says that they put out milliwatts of power. It should have been megawatts of power. Later he states that Mt. St. Helens is in Oregon while it is in Washington.

A great writer gets his facts straight and then the rest of the book is beleivable. In this case I could not go on since Mr. Donegan's "science" was at fault so early in the book.

Summary: Let's research the facts
Review: I could not go past page 27. When the author wrote that the output of the Chernoble nuclear power plant was milliwatts and that Mt. St. Helens was in Oregon I could not continue. If an author is writting fiction that's great, but if he includes something that actually happens as part of the story he should at least get the bare facts straight.

Summary: Enjoyable...if you're a fan to begin with
Review: I enjoyed this chapter in the series much more than the second book. Dane's team is lead deeper into this mystery where a war unlike any he (or we-the reader) has ever seen is inevitable. Donegan (Doherty, Mayer, etc...) is very capable of weaving various plots both in our current time, as well as in the past to produce an exciting read, however once again, the author leaves so many questions at the end of the book that it's very frustrating to not receive any closure. Don't worry Greg (Bob, Robert, etc...), I will buy the next book in the series, so stop doing this to me! Overall fast paced, and very well worth the time if you have the time to kill.
