Summary: A wonderfully engaging story
Review: It has really been a long time since I read a really good book, but once I picked up this one, I honestly couldn't put it down. The story line just drew me in immediately. I felt like I was there (in the story) the entire time. Time travel is a really intriguing topic. I even plan on one day visiting that hotel in San Diego, if only for a night! I hear the Travel Channel rated that particular beach in the story #2 in the nation? Of course, I couldn't wait to see the movie after finishing the book, but it goes without saying, there really isn't enough time in an hour-and-a-half long movie to put all of those little nuances you get in the story itself. The limited time in a movie makes it difficult for the characters to develop themselves, even though Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves did a wonderful job. It's unfortunate, though, because the book is wonderful and the movie -- pretty good -- but nothing like the book. So, if nothing else, the book is a must-read; then, treat yourself to the movie as the companion. Overall, enjoy life and always enjoy a good read.

Summary: I Preferred the Movie
Review: Without rehashing what others have said, I thought "Somewhere in Time" was much more successful, one of the few times when a movie is much better than the book it was based on. Among many other things, my main problem was Richard Collier's characterization in the book: he comes across as a pathetic wimp--it is difficult to fathom why Elise would have been interested in him. Also, the screenplay certainly doesn't suffer from the omission of Richard's cancer as a plot element--there is a plausible explanation for his escape to Michigan (writer's block), and it makes his death all the more poignant because it is only of a broken heart, not a tumor.

Summary: Somewhere in Time was better.
Review: The author wrote this novel before he wrote the screenplay for Somewhere in Time. In writing the screenplay, he was able to modify the premise of the story somewhat, making it perhaps less realistic but much more romantic. It's a good book, but the movie was better.

Summary: Richard Matheson - the GREATEST! :)
Review: Well, first off let me just say I loved reading Somewhere in Time. I haven't watched the movie yet, but I'm checking it out the next chance I get. Richard Matheson is one of my favorite authors. He's such an excellent writer - that's why he was one of Stephen King's biggest influences. For all of the other reviewers who said "well.. the book was okay, but it failed at being a true love story" - that's because Matheson isn't a romantic writer. His works are normally very dark, suspensful, and fit the horror genre. He's responsible for writing a lot of the Twighlight Zone episodes, so... while reading this book I kept in mind that there was going to be a tragic twist in there somewhere :) I don't think his ending ruined the story or anything... just left me a little depressed, as do all of his short stories and novels. It's much like his "What Dreams May Come", they both build up so beautifully, and the stories seem so nice and happy etc. It seems like Matheson never has a completely happy ending - It just wasn't in his nature to finish things on a happy note :) He must've been such a pessimist in real life.... poor fella.

But anyhow.. all I'm trying to say is Richard Matheson is fantastic. His writing is so perfectly done and very readable. If you're interested in his works you should go get a collection of his short stories or read "I Am Legend". Reading one of his short stories is just like watching an episode of the Twilight Zone - very cool.

Summary: Not "Somewhere in Time" but a good romantic fantasy.
Review: This novel is the basis for the classic film "Somewhere in Time" and that is one of the rare occations when the movie is better than the book. That isn't to say that the book is bad, but the music and the fabulous locations of the film add something amazing.

The first person narration of the book, as told into a tape recorder, gives a really cool voice to the first part. The first half, without giving away the plot, is a strange romantic obsession tale, written in a voice reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe.

Matheson says that the first section of the book was written while at the Hotel in question and you can believe it. It is truly hypnotic and superior to the movie. The 2nd half is quite a bit less, but the power of the opening still resonates in your mind.

If you are interested in this book because you enjoy the movie, read only the pre-time travel bit. It we make the film experience richer. But don't bother with the 2nd bit.

Summary: If you're a fan of the movie, read for a different take
Review: Okay, I saw the movie first.

The movie, Somewhere in Time, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour, is my favorite movie of all time. I felt like I needed to read the book because "the book is always better."

Well, I loved the book, but I have to say I still love the movie more. The book has an even more tragic premise, if you can imagine. Richard is dying before he goes back in time. Going back in time is not only the experience of a lifetime for him... when he falls desperately in love and lives a sweet few days, but he is also relieved of his pain.

If you're a fan, read the book. If you're in love with the movie, watch it again.

Summary: One of the Best Books Written!
Review: I could not put this book down! Very well written, all though I did not like the ending very much.

Summary: Matheson's Romantic Fantasy is Better as a Movie
Review: This is one of the few examples of a book that is not really as good as the movie. Where the book has its strengths is in the depiction of the inner mind of Richard Collier before he travels back in time. It is dark, brooding, and baroquely detailed when Collier is at the Hotel Del Coronado. (Which by the way is cool but not nearly as majestic as the Grand Hotel Mackinaw Island.)

If you like the movie, you will enjoy the book, but for different reasons. The book is good, but the movie is a classic.

Summary: After All These Years...
Review: I have finally found it again. I lost the book and have been looking for it for at least 15 years. To my joy and surprise I realized I could buy it here on amazon.com. On it's own, as it was originally written, this book is wonderful. When you add to that the fact that the remarkably romantic movie Somewhere in Time was based on it, the pair are unbeatable. If you loved the movie, you will love the book. Try them, they are classics.

Summary: A WONDERFUL STORY!
Review: I did not know until after I had read the book that this was the premise for the movie Somewhere in Time. I can't wait to go get the movie. I usually don't go for romances but this one was awesome and I just couldn't put it down.

Richard Collier has just months to live and decides to flip a coin and see where it takes him. He ends up in a beautiful hotel built in the 1800's. While wandering the halls of the hotel he sees a picture of a beautiful woman and his life is never the same.

This book delves into the inner turmoils of love and the lengths one will go to find that love, a love that goes beyond space and time.

This is a book that I will never forget.
