Summary: Wow !
Review: Anytime I read something truly incredible (as this book is) I have this depressing feeling that it will take at least a couple of years to run into something that good. I will not repeat everything that's already been written in the reviews below, but one thing needs to be said. Sci-fi is the only genre that gives authors FULL freedom to express themselves. Connie knows it and it shows. Easily in the TOP 5 of my all time favorite sci-fi novels.

Summary: One of my all-time favorite books
Review: I'll probably not say anything that wasn't said before but I liked this book so much that I felt I had to contribute a review.

One of the things I like best about Connie Willis is her ability to convey the way various historical events felt. In the Doomsday Book, it's utter helplessness; in Lincoln's Dreams, it's the horror at the heart of the Civil War. In this book, underneath all the witty goings-on, there is still the message of what it felt like to be in Coventry during the bombing of the cathedral.

This is not to say that this is a sad book; it's actually an utter delight. But it's also a very sweet book for all the fun it pokes at Victoriana. I don't want to give anything away but I do want to note that there's a moment at the end, when the historian contemplates what is made possible by the discoveries they make about time travel, that brought tears to my eyes. I laughed out loud several times while reading this book and then at the end, its sweetness was what stuck with me.

Summary: A delightful, witty romp!
Review: A clever time-travel story, "To Say Nothing of the Dog" is one of the most thoroughly entertaining novels I've read in recent memory. Connie Willis has done a first-rate job of juggling well-drawn characters, multiple plot strands (that come together beautifully at the end), period winks-and-nods, and speculative theory into a whole that far transcends any genre. And she has made it amusing throughout. I smiled and chuckled the entire way through this one, right up to the very end. The author's light-touch is perfectly suited here, and makes for one for one of the best books of the nineties!

Summary: A favorite I'd recommend to everyone!
Review: Great book! I've read others by the author and enjoyed them very much, but this is now my favorite. I laughed out loud repeatedly while reading it: the characters are great, neurotic in just the off-tilt ways. It's possible to read any couple of pages when you have a spare minute and have a really good time, but you'll want to read more. I'm envious of you who are about to enjoy this book for the first time, you're in for a real treat.

Summary: A satire on the Victorian Period
Review: If this book is ever made into a movie; it would have to cast John Clease in the starring role. He is perhaps the only British comedian that could carry the humor as well a Willis does in the book. Willis is able to rip apart the era though without any malice. He timing is perfect and her wit right on mark. When Verity sneaks into Ned's room at night (to discuss their mission, nothing that you couldn't read to your kids happens)he resonds, "What are you doing here! It's the Victorian era" or something like that.

Summary: Science fiction doesn't get any funnier
Review: It's a rare book that is as funny, absurd and so completely ridiculous as this is - it made me laugh out loud. The story is almost Dickens-like in it's convolution, and dry humor, and the remarkable resolution of all the loose ends. It is a terrific book!

Summary: Willis Lite
Review: If you are coming to this book because of Willis's serious works such as Doomsday Book or Lincoln's Dreams, you are likely to be disappointed. But if a whimsical Victorian mystery is just your cup of tea, and you don't mind "getting" many of the clues long before the protagonists do, you may enjoy this book.

Summary: Laugh out loud mystery
Review: This was the first book in a long time that had me laughing out loud (well snickering anyway). The first part of the story takes a little effort to get past because the main character is suffering from disorientation. Other than the initial confusion I have no criticism of the story. A very entertaining read.

Summary: Good for book group discussion
Review: Our book group chose to read this book and Three Men in a Boat as a joint read. We all enjoyed them both immensely and had a lively discussion and many laughs in remembering segments of each book. I will savor each book again in the future.

Summary: What fun!
Review: To Say Nothing of the Dog is a lighthearted romp through Victorian England (to say nothing of the Blitz and a few other time periods). Willis even seems to adopt the style of some of the comedies of the era.
