Rating: Summary: It's the end of the world as we know it - and I feel fine! Review: Life for me lately has become a bit mundane. You know, the usual: bills, hassles with my stupid boss, car problems, greedy landlords, etc. But a few weeks back, I checked out "Timequake" from the library. Whew! Before I finished reading the book's prelude, I was laughing. Damn! - insight oozes from the pages of this book. Vonnegut is the premier comic sage of our diseased Western Civilization. Many of us will sadly miss him when he's gone from sight.
Rating: Summary: His last book Review: Timequake reflects on Vonnegut's life more than his other novels. It contains alot of short stories that are creatively incorporated into the flow of his novel. The novel is a bit choppy but in an enjoyable way. It has alot of witty one liners and thought provoking statements. I would encourage all to read Timequake.
Rating: Summary: vonnegut's last stand Review: He finally wrote the autobiography he said he'd never write. As he did with "Breakfast of Champions" Vonnegut has created a new literary style- the "Bio-Novel". This book is definitely skewed toward Vonnegut freaks like myself; casual fans may not quite get it.
Rating: Summary: Highly recommended Review: I have read most of Vonneguts books and I'd have to say I enjoyed this one the most. Awesome book. But really you will have to read it to know so no point in my going on about it.
Rating: Summary: The life and ramblings of Kurt Vonnegut Review: My introduction to Kurt Vonnegut was through a well-worn copy of "Breakfast of Champions", picked up for 15 cents at the Vincent de Paul Store. What a terrific web-of-life type story. As I read "Timequake", I realized immediately that most of the pro reviewers didn't read the book--"Timequake" is simply not the book described on the back of its cover. If you want to read a Vonnegut novel, read "Breakfast of Champions". If you want to find out more about Vonnegut the man, read "Timequake". If "Timequake" is the first Vonnegut book you read, you'll be sorely disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Another cool Vonnegut book. Review: I have read almost all of Vonnegut's books, and he is pretty much all I've read for the last 2 years. I have loved them all to varying degrees, and this one is an extraordinary book like all the others. A freaking excellent book."You like Vonnegut?" "Damn straight I like Vonnegut." "Then read some more Vonnegut." It's simple: He doesn't disappoint. He even reveals in the book that he hates semicolons! Do you need to know any more than that to want to read this book? I think not. Rock on, Mr. Vonnegut!
Rating: Summary: attention Review: This is the best way for Vonnegut to wrap up his tenure as America's finest post war literary voice. I was filled with both joy an sorrow upon reading this book; joy for it is a wonderful treat for long time fans and new reader's alike, and sorrow for it is to be (allegedly) his last "novel." Read this book and every other written by Vonnegut. That's an order.
Rating: Summary: Timequake Review: I liked this book. It was fun. Thank you sir. Please read it
Rating: Summary: Vonnegut's Nadir Review: I can't begin to express my disappointment with this book. I was a big Vonnegut fan for years, but something went wrong around the time he entered his novel Breakfast of Champions to let his characters go. (Though he couldn't resist later bringing back Kilgore Trout, his fictional alter-ego and most tiresome literary device). It was as if all the whimsical, good-natured cynicism that made his early novels fresh and funny got up and left too, with the one exception of Galapagos, which I think ranks near Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle. With Timequake, he officially hits rock bottom. It is ironic that Vonnegut denounces TV for the death of the short story since his sound-bite writing style has increasingly become the sure that Vonnegut will ever really be regarded as a great novelist but, at the very least, he'd better quit producing work that calls his entire oeuvre into question. Any more efforts like this and he will certainly seal his fate as the Paul McCartney of literature. Sadly, the one-time "laughing prophet of doom" has become just a tiresome old crank.
Rating: Summary: You're All Wrong Review: I'm writing this more in response to the reviews I have read here, rather than in direct response to the book itself. 'Timequake' is one of the most beautifully crafted, absorbing and creative books I have ever read. Okay, so it has no real plot, no real characters - big deal. The book is about Vonnegut as much as it is about anything. This was only the second Vonnegut I read - but was by no means the last. An exceptional farewell from an exceptional, brilliant writer.
