Rating: Summary: Vonnegut in the Flesh!! Review: A friend of mine recommended Bluebeard a couple of years ago. It turned out to be one of the best books I ever read. It truly made me think about every written word. I figured Alot of the book was based on accual events or feels. I bought Timequake knowing that this was probably the last book Vonnegut would write. I was impressed with the insights he gave about himself. I also enjoyed the workout in trying to decipher fact from fiction. As much as I enjoyed this book, I would not recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to think or to someone who has never read any of his previous books.
Rating: Summary: I can hardly wait to see what's going to happen next! Review: There are special times that stay in our memory: My introduction to the thoughts and writings of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr in Ms Ruth Salisbury's American Literature class twenty-five years ago is one of those moments. (Thanks so much, Ms Salisbury.) I look forward to future works - I will remain hopeful in spite of hearing that this may have been "the last novel".
Rating: Summary: An entertaining read! Review: I enjoyed the "snippet" style of the novel and the amusing observations about life in America and the world. Most of the time it was very much like a memoir, although its hard to tell which parts are fact and which are fiction.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable but somewhat disconnected ruminations Review: This is not a novel, but rather portions of a scrapped novel interspersed with personal anecdotes and ruminations. It is very enjoyable but might disappoint any reader who is looking for a cohesive narrative. Nonetheless, I find that this book has lingered in my mind far longer than most.
Rating: Summary: Humanity Review: Quite simply I have never read a more "human" book, Mr. Vonnegut delivers just what we need for our day to day interactions. Disagree? So shoot me.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful and amusing read! Review: Timequake and Vonnegut's wonderful, amusing and unique musings made what would have been an uncomfortable and interminably long flight back from Istanbul into an absolute delight! It brought me back in time to what I enjoyed about his earlier books and made me laugh out loud. Yet, there was a real bittersweet quality to it as well, one could almost say a "downer" aspect to it as he said farewell to friends and family who have gone on to their just rewards...but here is this 70+ year old mad offering an innocent idealism that is so refreshing, and so naive in this cut throat/techy world we dwell in --in any case, I loved it, and wished that it had gone on for the next 2 hours of my 10 hour flight.
Rating: Summary: Why can't I be Kurt Vonnegut? Review: As an aspiring writer I often wonder what my niche in the writing world will be. As I read this book, I found that Vonnegut has created and put an end to all his niches. He is a master, and the author of all my favorite books. This book was his good bye to the insanity of this world. As Trout did he will move on to better times and immortalization.
Rating: Summary: A fitting requiem Review: I have read Vonnegut many times, and fully enjoy his work. Timequake, however, was different. Kurt appears to have lost his ability to maintain a thought for more than a few sentences. He slips between fiction and reality a little too easily -- perhaps a sign of senility. I love Kurt, and appreciate his work. Timequake was not his best. I now must go back and re-read his better novels to again place him in the high regard he deserves.
Rating: Summary: Ting-a ling Review: KURT vonnegut is a master of the unique. He successfully combines an autobiographal humdinger with a beautiful critique of what is crap in our society. History provides the ridiculous backdrop to Mr. Vonnegut's family life, whilst his alter ego Kilgore Trout reveals the irony of the human condition. Ting-aling!
Rating: Summary: You gotta love Vonnegut Review: Maybe we have heard some of these ideas in other Vonnegut works. Maybe it does ramble a little. One thing is for sure, it is good to hear from an old friend. Check his lecture out this winter in the Chicago area. The man is pure genius.
