Rating: Summary: His Best Ever Review: I have read many of Michael Crichton's books (The Great Train Robbery, The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Airframe, Jurrassic Park, The Lost World, Timeline, and his newest book Prey) and I think that this book is my favorite of all of them. It is a fast-paced thriller that is extremely hard to put down and is by far better than the movie. It also helps explain things that the movie left out.The book takes place on an island off the coast of Coasta Rica where a venture capitalist named John Hammond has set up a safari type tour of genetically enginered prehistoric dinosaurs, all of which are enclosed in their own sections to protect the visitors. Six people visit the island and are asked to evaluate it in the issue of safty. Several events take place that all come together and all of the parks systems go offline, allowing the dinosaurs to roam free. Now the people have to work for their lives and find a way to call for someone to get them off the island--alive. This book is probably my favorite book of all time and definitly Michael Crichton's best work ever. I would highly reccommend it to anyone who is able to read.
Rating: Summary: Jurassic Park Review: Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton takes science fiction to the next level. Michael Crichton proves his brilliance by creating a whole new world of dinosaurs, in a way that may seem possible in the distant future. He creates the dinosaurs by taking DNA out of ancient mosquitoes that are trapped in amber from the dinosaur time period. It's amazing how much time, thought, and research it had to take him to create his brilliant world. Most people watch the movie, and just expect the book to be just the same. But that is not correct. The novel has many more differences than the movie. For example, the novel has a totally different ending than the first movie. In fact, the ending of the first Jurassic Park novel is used in the second Jurassic Park movie when they discover the birdcage and travel through it in the midst of the pterodactyls. If you have not read the book, and enjoyed the movie, I would recommend reading this novel. Some think this novel is kind of childish, and I can see why they think that because of the dinosaurs, but I must say I really enjoyed it. It opens up the imagination, and makes you really wonder if re-creating dinosaurs would really be possible. So if ever you are looking for a good novel to read, check out Jurassic Park.
Rating: Summary: Good "light" read Review: Galapagos is a very interesting book from the get go and it is compounded by the fact that it¡¦s written millions of years after it happened. It tells the tale of the people who began the next branch of the human evolutionary tree and how like the Galapagos creatures were stranded and diverged from the normal species developmental path. The novel contains many intriguing side stories which most of the time seems better than the actual story. Vonnegut unfortunately added some pretty annoying literary devices which took away from the stories power. For example he added stars next to the name of people who are going to die soon. Those stars, similar to his so it goes in Slaughter House 5, seem to give away the story line and helps the story very little. This novel is certainly not his best, but because of all the wonderful and detailed side stories and characters it¡¦s a good read for any dedicated Vonnegut reader. I also recommend Cats Cradle, Time quake and Breakfast of Champions for other Vonnegut fans.
Rating: Summary: Read This Book Review: This is one of my favorite books. Though Crichton does not bore his readers with too much description, he provides memorable scenes and multifaceted characters to interest and stimulate. Readers are captured on the first few pages by suspenseful deaths, then introduced to the large and controversial world of cloning and programming nature. The plot line takes shape as we follow archaeologist Alan Grant and his biologist coworker Ellie Sattler on their advisory visit to Jurassic Park, an amusement park whose attractions are cloned dinosaurs living in rough recreations of their former habitats. The project was founded and carried out by an elderly, rich dinosaur enthusiast named John Hammond. I enjoyed the thought provoking philosophies of the character Ian Malcolm about science and the dangers of trying to recreate and control dangerous animals that we know nothing about. I would reccomend this book to people who are interested in life science, technology, or science fiction.
Rating: Summary: A view from a "real" paleontologist. Review: Being a fake paleontologist I would have to say that compared to my invisible works, which are now present on a different planet, that Jurassic park supported its suspenseful mien with a credible scientific reality. Of course, through years of imaginary graduate school, I can easily tell you that cloning dinosaurs with the blood drawn from a mosquito, present inside a piece of amber, is a bit obscene. However, Michael Chrichton explains the method of creating dinosaurs with such detail that the reader cannot help but believe that it is really possible. Aside from the strands of DNA sequences and the computer algorithms, Jurassic park is in itself a frickin' awesome novel. The fact that Michael Chrichton was able to right a fairly decent story about prehistoric dinosaurs is a reason on its own to read this book 43, and if your obsessed maybe even 44 times. Personally, I can easily declare that Jurassic park was one of my preferred novels, for I am a "trained" paleontologist and dinosaurs are my life.
Rating: Summary: "Linden approved" Review: Having been the first book I read by Michael Crichton, I must say I could only hope the rest of his books are on par with Jurassic Park. Crichton truly wrote a page-turner having kept me thoroughly entertained from start to finish even having seen the movie. Unless you were born yesterday you have seen Jurassic park, and liked it. In short, a diverse group of inspectors travel to ambitious Dr. Hammond's island where they find the doctor decided to play god and take dinosaurs off the extinct species list. On the island they find themselves and Hammond's grandchildren in a slight predicament when Ian Malcolm's chaos theory takes effect, and the dinosaurs break free. Crichton devises plenty of colorful and outright brutal ways to bite the dust as the group encounters troubles in their efforts to get off the island to safety. Unlike the book, the movie leaves many of the juicy details/entrails out for the practicality of viewer friendliness. With that said, the book Jurassic Park is delightfully gory, and more explicit. Several pages into the book you'll notice stronger plot and character building. In effort to not divulge all details I'll say that several major scenes are omitted from the movie such as baby-eating, chicken-sized dinosaurs found on another island other than the doctor's "Isla Nublar" subtly hinting at a sequel from the start of the book. Jurassic Park was a great book that I would recommend to anyone looking for a culmination of action, suspense, and stunning realism.
Rating: Summary: My review of Jurassic park Review: Do not think that because you saw the movie you don't need to read the book. The book is better. it has a lot of action and suspense. It is quite long but worth reading. The basic plot is that there is a lot of people with very different backgrounds that are trapped on an island with a bunch of geneticly engineered dinosaurs that want to hurt them. And to top it off the power is out. If you like Sci-Fi thrillers read this book.
Rating: Summary: Jurassic Park Review: This bok is a bloody, gory, action packed bool about a real dinosaur park gone bad, written by Michael Crichton. I recommend this book to anyone who who is seeking an action packed, keep you begging for more book. A generoouse scientist uses ancient dinosaur DNA extracted from petrified mosquitoes to clone real life dinosaurs in the hope of making it a park ten times better than Disney Land, or Universal Studios. Humans and pre historic beasts can collide safley, or is it safe? that's what a group of inspectors are their to find out, They find out alright.
Rating: Summary: Crichton at his best Review: "Jurassic Park" is a great novel that I think ranks as one of Crichton's best. It has the feel of a classic, one of those ideas where you say, "Why didn't I think of that?" One might make the argument that the (human) characters take a back seat to the dinosaurs, but I don't believe this is the case- I found the characters to be well developed and interesting. Crichton also seems to do the dinosaurs justice, as he seems to have done his homework on this subject, though I'm guessing some in the scientific community might say that he's taken a few liberties in speculating about some of the dinosaurs' characteristics. But that's artistic license. Overall, a highly entertaining and imaginative novel. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
