Rating: Summary: Jurassic Park Review: Reports of a lizard looking animal biting children in a small town in Costa Rica believed to be what the natives call a "hubia" or raptor, worry one doctor but go ignored. One day when a little girl is bitten on the beach and taken to a doctor they then find that this creature is a poisonous dinosaur. Dr. Grant had been working on an excavation in Montana funded by John Hammond, a whealthy diosaur enthusiast. John Hammond was creating a park on his private island of the coast of Costa Rica that was very secrative. Hammond had made the world's most state of the art genetics lab to clone dinosaur from prehistoric insects captured in tree sap. Hammond invited Grant and his student Sattler to come tour his park, along with his lawyer and grandkids. When they first arrived they were amazed. They didnt know that one of the computer technicians who knew everything about the park's system worked, was secretly paid to steal embryos by a pharmeceutical company. He shuts down the parks system and the dinosaur on the island escape and overtake the island. Crichton has written yet another great book that will leave readers turning pages.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Thriller with Dinosaurs, what more could you ask Review: A movie never does the book justice, or so I have heard. Personally this is the first book I have read after seen the movie or before for that matter. I'm not much of a reader, but I had heard how wonderful this book was from family and always wanted to make time to read it, but never had the chance until recently, I'm glad I did. This was worth all the hype I had heard and ten times the story the movie was. So much of the book was cut or rearranged for the movie that I'm disappointed now when I watch it. The only drawback there might be to the book is Crichton's use of scientific knowledge to show how much he knows about the subject. It is very interesting and refreshing to see how far an author will go to show you how much he or she has researched for their writings. Even with these extensive parts the book is still quite a roller coaster, making the book entertaining and very interesting, too very good combinations. Anyone who has seen the movie either must read this book, or never read it, because it will make or break the movie going experience for you. If you loved the aspect of the movie and the concept, read the book. If you loved the movie and do not want to be blown away by something greater, do not read this book. I Personally loved the book and plan on making sure I read books after I see movies from now on.
Rating: Summary: Cool but forced, especially as contrasted with the film Review: The idea, of course, is fantastic. A premise no-one would think of. And the plot, of course, is equally brilliant (the frog DNA, the Nedry subplot). What is unfortunate is that too many people die just too easily. John Hammond should have seen his mistakes, so should Henry Wu have. What happened to John Arnold anyway? And why does Ian Malcolm come alive again in "The Lost World"? The film, which was screenwritten by Crichton as well, makes up for some of the book's small failings.
Rating: Summary: Science, Ethics, and Monsters Review: I have read Jurassic Park 3 times since 1991. I was in the 8th grade when I picked it up, and it inspired me to pursue interests in genetics and biology. I recently read it with my own 8th grade life-science class. The book made apparent to them the reality that genetic engineering is a subject they cannot avoid thinking about and dealing with ethically today. The book excites the scientific mind, incites the ethical mind, and maintains an entertaining level of thrills for the suspense lover. This is probably Crichton's best fictional science book yet (though he has written many good ones).
Rating: Summary: And I thought the movie ruled! Review: Ok, to start off with, the movie ruled. I mean, who couldn't love a movie that major hunk Jeff Goldblum was in? Well, that isn't the only reason I loved the movie, but, hey, I just had to put that in! Then, there's the novel. It was the coolest! It ruled!
Rating: Summary: Park it Review: Jurassic Park is one of the better sci-fi books from a notable sci-fi author. It has deep roots in dinosaurs and exo-laboratory adventure. The technological devices and theoretical plots synthesizes prize in this bestselling novel. There are points when you feel velociraptors breathing down your neck and smell dew on leaves of deadly plants. Yellow frogs are the last thing you will be worrying about.
Rating: Summary: Tense, perfectly plotted like the film. Review: While Steven Spielberg has received his share of criticism for not developing his characters enough in the film, his adaption of this perfectly plotted novel is still well-done and almost unbearably intense. Michael Crichton has written his share of appealing stories, but this one may be his best. Many may find it hard to call a book that relies on science so much a great one. But this novel is masterful due to its perfect character development, hard-lined facts, and just an amazing introduction that leads right into one of the most intense ideas in book-writing history. A must-read.
Rating: Summary: 4 1/2 Stars: Very Good, but A Little Overrated Review: This book is an excellent read, but don't be fooled by all of the comments and praise for this book: it is NOT Crichton's best ever. That distinction belongs to Sphere, or maybe even Disclosure. It is very good, even addictive, and it is entertaining, but it is simply overrated. Crichton brings us a story about an island devoted to dinosaurs run by an eccentric old man with deep pockets. Inevitably, something goes horribly wrong, and people start dropping like flies as the remaining ones struggle to remain alive. It is a lot different than the movie, and it is undeniably better, even though I liked the movie a lot. It certainly ends differently. All in all this is a standout book, but a bit overrated, and not Crichton's best.
Rating: Summary: The most entertaining book by the most entertaining author. Review: Many people have seen the amazing movie, along with the ever so disappointing sequal, however, I would be willing to bet that now nearly as many have read the marvelous book. First of all, if you liked the movie, the book will become an instant classic to you, and even if you didn't like the movie, you would still enojoy the book. I never enjoyed reading very much, but after reading this book, it changed my view on books. I went out and picked up the sequal (which was also much better than the movie), and several other Crichton books. Basically, Chrichton changed the way I view books. His books were the keys that opened the doors to my brain, and my imagination. This is a great book by a great author, and I advise anyone who has not yet read it to go out and pick up a copy.
