Rating: Summary: Vonnegut doesn't get any better than this. Review: "Mr Vonnegut" (below) only rates this a 6. He's wrong. But then the real Mr. Vonnegut would know that his first novel was 'Player Piano' Vonnegut never bettered this fluid blend of cynical pessimism and hilarious imagination run riot. 'Cat's Cradle' and 'Galapagos' follow in (a close) 2nd place.
Rating: Summary: A definite Must Read Book. Review: I enjoyed this book the first time I read it. I have loaned this book to others. I usually have to buy myself another copy after doing so. My son made off with my last copy. The black humor of this piece of literature is delicious. This is a must-read book. The author is a master storyteller demonstrating his skill at the craft.
Rating: Summary: An entertaining Space Journey With only a few problems Review: An overall good story. A starting our book for Teens trying to get interested in reading because of the humor and though its not incrediably easy the pages fly by. Though there are some sections that are so deep and boring that you need a crow bar to turn the pages, those quickly pass. I recommend this bok for any one. A Vonnegutt Classic!!!
Rating: Summary: k. vonnegut's schizoid nightmare Review: I have read most of the author's works and believe this is his bleakest study of man in search of his own identity in the presence of progress, machines and the dehumanization of people. Malachi Constant embarks on an alice in wonderland journey through his psyche after a 56-day binge. Through his hallucinations, he tries to find the human in himself. In the end when he believes he's on Titan, he has made a compromise. This study of alienation in the modern world is truly frightening, and its message should be heeded.
Rating: Summary: Classic Vonnegut. Review: Master of the bizarre scientific and social events Vonnegut weaves a world of corporate bussines, social disaster, and religious revolution. When a wealthy man shoots himself into space and disapears in a little understood field that makes him appear on earth at short intercals wierd things begin to happen. His exwife and the head of a major corporation are stolen by Martians. The Martians attack. A new religion arises and every aspect of human nature and life is questioned. The military ranks are questioned, religion is questioned, and the power that one person should be able to attain is questioned. A fabulous novel that is a perfect example of the satiric power of Kurt Vonnegut.
Rating: Summary: What the? Review: Is it sci-fi? Is ti humor? Is is social commentary? Is is it an attack on religious fundimentalism as well as sciencisim?-or all of the above? Who cares!?!? The book is sensational! I've read it twice, and I'm half way through it again. It is by far the funniest, most bizrre work from a man who dominates in both arenas. BUY IT-READ IT!!!
Rating: Summary: You Have Not Read Vonnegut Until You Have Read "Sirens.." Review: I have read every, and I do mean every book, novel,
auto-biographical sketch ever put out by Kurt Vonnegut.
I am convinced that "Sirens of Titan" is by far his most compelling, his most outrageous, his most
excellent book ever. This is a must read for all fans of his and a must
gift to all those in your life who need a dose
of meta-reality in a world gone madder then the one he weaves into the latter half of the book. Do yourself and the ones that you love a favor, buy
this book. It was written for you, after all, you did find this review didn't you?
Rating: Summary: The book that put Vonnegut on the map is out of this world Review: Few authors have ever had imagination explosions quite as traumatic as "Sirens of Titan." It should come as little surprise, then, that the book was a bit too ahead of its time when released, and was dropped out of print with little hoopla. But as the years went by, it became so popular around college campuses that students were willing to pay outrageous prices for what few copies could be found.
That's "Sirens" for you; here we find the first inklings of original madness from Vonnegut: Take a part in an interplanetary revolution, get stranded on the inner surface of Mercury, or fly off to Titan to meet the infamous "Slaughterhouse 5" co-stars, the Tralfamadorians. They make their first appearance here, as does much of Vonnegut's personal worldview, and his wonderfully black humor. Where this book goes, the rest of his oevre have followed. And though he wrote two slightly better books ("Welcome to the Monkeyhouse", which is admittedly just a short story compedium, and the aforementioned "Slaughterhouse") he would never be quite this outrageous again.
Rating: Summary: If you like Vonnegut, you are guaranteed to love this book. Review: This is not only Mr. Vonnegut's best novel, it may very well be the best novel ever written. Because the main character is spread out in space and time, the author is able to integrate scenes on Titan, Earth and Mercury with improbable prognostications of the future that somehow always come true, weaving the experiences of the main characters into an ironic, sarcastic morality play of epic proportion.
Fun is poked at religion, warfare, space travel, marriage, romance, friendship, business, weatlth, the stock market, loyalty, kinship and human frailty. As the Beatles were to music, so Vonnegut is to literature - A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
Rating: Summary: A stunning look at society! Review: This is indeed one of Vonnegut's best ever. In this darkly humorous look at life, society, and the future, you'll laugh, you'll cry, but you won't put it down. Few writers have ever opened their reader'seyes to the meaning of life the way vonnegut does in this depressingly funny and exceptional novel, which is a must for people of all ages and beliefs
