Rating: Summary: One of the best about a young man's coming of age. Review: One of the most memorable first lines ever in a story. DEFINITELY NOT BE BE CONFUSED WITH THE MOVIE (BASTARDIZED VERSION - AS ALWAYS). The fact that REH doesn't reveal the full & last name and ethnic of the main character until almost 2/3's into the novel reveals much about his attitude about mid-60's sensibilities (can't give it away to those who haven't read the book). His description of the decisions one has to make coming out of school, the life-style fo the military, the richness of the environment is second to none. I fully believed I was there. It seemed at times the story line about the "enemy" was secondary (and somewhat undeveloped) to the story line about young Johnny growing and maturing. Even so, they were exciting and very enjoyable. It did remind me of being a combination of World War II (but in outer space) and other wars where the fighting didn't affect the day to day life of the local populace, until the bombing of a Major City in Argentina, then everyone was all for the war. I have read the book probably 12 - 15 times over a 30 year period and still find it as fresh today as the first time. Highly recommend the novel to anyone. BUT DON'T SEE THE MOVIE.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: An astonishingly honest and deeply moving novel, Heinlein captures the emotional highs and lows of a young man in transition from naive idealist to world wise hopeful. One of the best books ever on the philosophy of leadership and responsibility. A must read for any Sci-Fi fan.
Rating: Summary: Not enough battle scenes. Review: The book had a bit to much philosophy in it. At start i was intrested in Heinlein's words but, getting closer to the book's end the only thing that kept me going was reaching the next battle scene.
Rating: Summary: Heinlein's most provocative novel-still controversial... Review: Written well before advancing age ruined his writing, sometimes sentimental, this is still a novel of ideas that moves with the propulsive rhythm Heinlein is famous for--and his thesis(citizens have a duty to their society and government)is expressed in a way that still makes soft-headed liberals uncomfortable as hell...
Rating: Summary: Greatest combination of SF and military strategy around! Review: Much like L. Ron Hubbard's wartime novel "Final Blackout", Robert Heinlein has expertly woven political philosophy, military strategy, and the ethics of war into an exciting story of one man's involvment in a war of universal proportions. From the first page, the reader is transported into the thick of battle on alien worlds, an academy of military minds comparable to the greatest generals of all time, and facing an enemy so foreign, terror strikes the heart. A non-stop read for SF and military fiction lovers alike.
Rating: Summary: One of the all time classic S-F novels Review: If you saw the movie, be warned, this is not the same story. This is the story as Heinlein meant it to be told, showing the lessons a young man learns as he undergoes military training, and experiences firsthand the reality of modern warfare. Additionally he gives us an intriguing look at a possible future society where the government is run by retired military personnel. You may not agree with Heinlein's politics, or philosophy, but the story will grip you regardless. A must read novel!
Rating: Summary: Interesting Review: Though I agree with most of his views on how the world should be run this book was a little dry. I read this book primarily for his insights into future society. I must agree with most of what he said. When he wasnt waxing philosophical the book tended to drag. I would like to know how the movie and book are related besides the title?
Rating: Summary: A good read. Review: This is the best book I have ever read. It is a must read by anyone who claims to like science fiction. Heinlein throws you into action in the first chapter of the book, then puts you through the toughest boot camp in the world. Finaaly he puts you on some planet in the middle of nowhere with a lot of other people in the M.I.(mobile infantry) and an alien race thats only goal is to destroy you. Definitely a great book!!!
Rating: Summary: One of the all-time great science fiction novels Review: A work of future history in which space travel has become commonplace, Starship Troopers outlines a strongly authoritarian and centralized society evolved from the chaos of a late 20th Century war. Heinlein reveals the new order in bits and pieces over the course of the story; the reader becomes a student of future political science. The future world that Heinlein builds grows more fascinating with every page. More than half of the book establishes a compelling logic behind the future social order, its acceptance among the population and the reasons for its stability. The training of the Troopers is inventive and engaging; the brilliant description of their weaponry, tactics and command structure propels the reader from page to page seeking more detail. The conflict with the Bugs, which provides the engaging action passages in the story, is true genius on several levels. The alien nature of the Bugs' society with their mysterious tactics and apparent invincibility stimulates the reader's sense of apprehension and fascination as the novel builds to its climax. As an alien society, they provide a sharp and unmistakable contrast to the Troopers organization and philosophy. The Bugs instill fear, not only in the Troopers but also in the reader himself. Starship Troopers permits the reader to experience Heinlein's future world in detail that could only be surpassed by living it ourselves.
Rating: Summary: Simply Amazing Review: This book is wonderful. Since seeing the movie, I was interested to find out more. Upon reading the original Heinlein novel, I found myself stunned by the fact that it was actually better than the movie. I'm not saying that the movie isn't good - it's excellent, but the original novel is a whole lot better because Heinlein's words haven't been changed. This book is so popular with people that it even inspired movies like ALIENS (1986) that wouldn't have been the same if Starship Troopers hadn't been released.
