Summary: Amazon's synopsis is somewhat faulty
Review: The book does not endorse beating of children, but rather discipline, an that nature's natural teacher is reluctance to incur pain. While flogging is now considered cruel and unusual punishment, in the past it was commonplace. The book has a true philisophical bent on examining a working society, man's role in the universe and the necessity to of man to continue to win the survival of the fittest battle.

An excellent read, well paced and engrossing. Good story line with interesting characters. Please do not use the atrocious movie to judge this book. Any similarity appears to be purely coincidental. A classic sci-fi tale.

Summary: One of the best books that has and ever will be printed
Review: Some say that Heinlein didn't believe what he was writing. He believed it just not to the extreme taken in the book. What he was trying to say was simply: Patriotism is good, self-sacrifice is good, actually punishing criminals is good. I would like to add that I would rather live in this world then the politically correct one the liberals (far left liberals, not the average inteligent person who considers himself liberal)would create

Summary: Makes you think...
Review: The basic story of Heinleins book has already been summed up bfore - What is more important to my mind is that he adresses the question "Is a strong military and a certain grade of duty and discipline necessary for freedom and even liberty ?" He answers a clear "Yes !" even though we should not take all of the books views as his personal opinion. And even if you disagree strongly with him, this fascinating book will make you face those questions. A must-read for any SF-fan and many others besides...

Summary: I HAD to put this book down!
Review: After watching the movie, I was expecting much better from the book. Instead I got a slow-moving book mostly about the thoughts of Johnny Rico, instead of the war he was fighting. I did find the suits the Terran Marines wore interesting (including their absence from the movie), but the book just couldn't keep my interest. I had to FORCE myself to read this book to its end. If you like the action of the movie, do NOT read the book!

Summary: Boring
Review: Although it had it's good moments and some great in depth thought I found everything else to be slow, dragged on, and just plain boring. It took me a week to get through the book because I would find that T.V. was more interesting. Ender's Game is the book you should read.

Summary: Comparing it to the movie would be insulting
Review: Robert Heinlein is probably the greatest science fiction writer that ever lived. This book is close to a hundred times better than the movie. I mean, come on, look at the movie. They use stupid tactics and equipment that are demonstrated to not work time and again. Come on you guys, haven't you ever heard of armor piercine ammo? The book does much better, probably because Heinlein wasn't working on a budget. The plot is more interesting, the people are more realistic, and the technology is more powerful. Case closed.

Summary: A classic
Review: This is one of the classics of sci-fi. Some of the moralizing Heinlen does can be disturbing, but you have to remember when it was written and Heinlen's background-- he's a graduate of the Naval Academy. Also, the movie went way too far in trying to draw analogies to the Nazis. And of course, dropping the power suits! Might want to check out some other sci-fi books-- Area 51 series by Doherty who is a West Pointer-- interesting checking his views in his books against Heinlen's; The Time Patrol is neat; Dune, of course.

Summary: Heinlein's novel is much more than bug eyed monsters!
Review: Robert Heinlein's Starship Troops is far more than a sci-fi adventure romp; it is an impressively intelligent examination of the dynamics of political/social systems, war, military leadership and doctrine, and, of course, just how human beings manipulate and are manipulated by these things. What makes this a truly great novel is that Heinlein never "preaches" to the reader, his commentary is intertwined within a thrilling story full of exciting (and likeable) characters. A must for anyone who wishes to understand the dynamics of military leadership, in fact this book is on the USMC's suggested reading list.

Summary: A Masterpiece of Science Fiction
Review: Briefly put: A friend gave me this book, simply because he believed I should read it. I have since passed on this legacy and buy this book for all of my friends. I have never read a more fascinating book.

Summary: Recommended Reading.
Review: Almost ten years ago, and long before Starship Troopers became a movie, the Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division, (Light Infantry) reommended that Company Grade Officers and young Staff NCO's read this book. There is much more than meets the eye. While the movie was amusing and visually pleasing, the book is more significant.
