Summary: Don't miss it
Review: As a thoroughly modern black female, I could never conceive of life as a slave. This tale reminds us that slavery is a state of mind as well as an institution. A slavery mentality is what develop when the institution changes and shapes you, even if it touches your body, soul, or mind just once.

Dana is fierce in her passion for life as she is in her desire to make sense of the world she zips into. This tale is truly frightening. I will never view time travel in quite the same way. I also like the under current of "love" stories through this novel. Love is not just a healthy, two way street but somehow a bargain where there is no clear winner. There are no win-win situations in this book. Octavia Butler should inspire us all to try our hands at creating the very real with the unspeakable and absurd. Just as in her novel Parable of the Sower, you can hear what the characters hear, speak, and see. This novel is as scary as Parable of the Sower.

Summary: Don't Miss It!
Review: Kindred is a the kind of novel you won't be able to put down. It is insighteful and so real the suspense will keep you wired until the end. You will remember it long afterwards. Kindred is a wonderful book I will pass on to all of my friends.

Summary: Buy it! Read It! Pass it on!
Review: It is so easy to say what "I" would have done, if I had been a slave. Kindred puts this into perspective for us. This book puts the reader there. It lets us know with today's knowledge, education, and wit, slavery still was hell. I have let all my friends read this book, everyone enjoyed it. Buy it, read it, and pass it on!

Summary: This book was fantastic!! Everyone should read it!!!
Review: This was by far one of the best books I have ever read. From the first line to the last this book kept me totally interested. I couldn't put it down. I am recommending this for my bookclub. This book painted such a vivid picture of what it was like to be a slave that I actually felt like I had been transported to that time. Excellent book. Everyone should read it.

Summary: A book that brought slaves to life
Review: After reading several books on slavery, this was the first piece of literature that gave slaves pesonality. I could picture Alice, Nigel, Dana as indivuals who happen to be caught in a ruff time era. Some were gentle, some were wise, some were sneaky and some were bright. They were real people, and that is something Brillant that Butler captured. I completed the book in three days and had a better understanding on how enslavement can capture your heart, mind and dreams. I'm hooked on Butler's work and will read all of her pieces.

Summary: An excellent detour from ordinary fiction

Summary: Fabulous novel -- heartily recommended to all
Review: The wonderful thing about Kindred is that it places a modern Black woman and white man into a situation where where the reality of slavery becomes a completely felt experience for the modern reader, an experience as intense and thrilling as any good mystery or science fiction novel, and at the same time a deep exploration of a serious historical issue. Truely a fabulous book.

Summary: I really liked this book.
Review: I really liked the book. It had a lot of suspense to it. I liked Kevin. He was my favorite character. He was always patient and wanted to be there for her. I liked the symbolism behind her travels back and forth. Butler did a great job in writing this book. She did a good job in doing the time travels the way she did. Every time she went back to her present time, the past was not all right and vice versa.

Summary: Fascinating Read
Review: Excellent book, skillful writing. Kindred is the story of a modern day black woman, Dana Franklin. She and her white husband Kevin, have just moved into a new house. She is unpacking books, when she is suddenly overcome by a strange dizziness. The scene around her blurs and she finds herself beside a river with a young white boy drowning in it.
Dana rescues him, and applies mouth to mouth resusication. His mother appears on the scene and is alarmed and begins beating Dana with her fists. His father arrives and aims a rifle at her!
Dana finds herself suddenly back in her own world and time, which is 1976.
Within a short period of time in 1976, however, she is pulled back again into this other world, which turns out to be in the 1800's in the antebellum south.
This time several years have gone by in the 1800's. Yet each time she returns to 1976, only a short period of time has elapsed.
She becomes acquainted with the young boy, whose name is Rufus Weylin and they develop an unusual relationship.
The antebellum south is a dangerous place for a black woman, and a well-educated black woman is regarded with even more suspicion.
Her life becomes more and more complicated with each return to the past.
This is an intricately woven story and reflects a part of American History in a way that is rarely presented.
The twists and turns of the plot are unexpected, but totally believeable. I became completely involved with this character. The book is written in the first person, in a literary, but highly direct and readable style.
I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys an interesting, well written tale in a historical setting.
