Rating: Summary: Not knowing when to stop Review: I love the quiet sinister beggining - up until bree this book is good. So thats all i recommend you read. After this point for all it's gratuitous description it becomes almost a synopsis - all the atmosphere is gone. this atmosphere almost returns in the mines of moria but is obliterated soon after by the elves. There are two reasons people enjoy this book 1) they read it all so don't want to admit it was a big waste of time and 2) they are those strange immature people who read sci fi/fantasy and haven't picked up a real novel once in their thus far wasted lives...
Rating: Summary: A great collector's edition Review: This classic boxed set of the Lord of the Rings is great. The illustrations are breathtaking and bring Tolkien's world to life. If you love Tolkien... and the Lord of the Rings, this is a must have for your library. The construction is great, the maps add a lot of detail. I am very pleased with this edition.
Rating: Summary: Incredible writing mixed with an incredible story Review: What's there to say that hasn't already been said? The book (actually, books) are massive, intricate, spellbinding, and jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Not only did Tolkien create his own world, with its own species, languages, and geography; he also started a new genre. If not in the same league as Dostoevsky and Kafka, as Milton and Dante, he is a literary master in his own regard, and more impacting in a sense that more people enjoy and read his works. A marvellous book.
Rating: Summary: The Lord of the Rings Review: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King" are wonderful books written by a great author named J.R.R. Tolkien. These three fantastic books are packed with fantasy, adventure, and literature. I have only read "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy once, but I will one day read them all over again. "The Hobbit or There and Back Again" is another wonderful book written by the author J.R.R. Tolkien. But, if I were you, I would read "The Hobbit" before "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy because they are a sequel to "The Hobbit". You would be sort of lost if you read "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy before "The Hobbit" because there are certain things that happen in "The Hobbit" that are mentioned in "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy. So read "The Hobbit or There and Back Again" before "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy like I did. Anyway: Each book from "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy are my favorite books because, unlike other fantasy books, they sent me to a world that was unbelievably similar to ours (even though they are fantasy books). There are many fantasy characters in "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy. And they are: phantoms, trolls, orcs, wizards, elves, dwarves, hobbits (which are halflings), and much more. If you want a very good fantasy/adventure book to read then buy "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy boxed set.
Rating: Summary: Lord of the Rings Review: These are some of the best books i've ever read. Tolkien's best works! They absolutely capture my imagination and have made me become more interested in the old world. I love these! With the action, the romance, the just plain fantasy of it all, who couldnt??????
Rating: Summary: Being Part of a Great Quest Makes Frodo Immortal Review: I just finished reading "The Lord of the Rings" and am trying to gather my thoughts about it. It is long! And there are parts that are boring. But there are parts that are soaring and beautiful and bring tears to your eyes. Elves, dwarves, hobbits, wizards, and monsters of various sorts fill the pages as Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry wind their way to the Crack of Doom to rid the world of the ring that would give ultimate power to the evil lord. The creative imagination of J.R.R. Tolkien boggles the mind as the reader becomes involved in episode after episode of danger and intrigue, such as the attempts of Gollum to steal the ring, the giant spider that would crush the life out of Frodo, and the orcs and black riders and other strange enemies that are constantly appearing out of nowhere to threaten the hobbits' mission. Filled with folklore, magic and enchantment, "The Lord of the Rings" also speaks to the need we all have to participate in a great quest, to rise above our ordinary existence and do a great service for mankind. We identify with Frodo, an average middle-aged hobbit, who, like his Uncle Bilbo before him (in "The Hobbit"), enjoyed his peace and quiet and comforts, and yet, when he was selected to go on this amazing quest, through no choice of his own, rose to the occasion and became immortal.
Rating: Summary: Love it! Love it! Love It! Review: I had doubts about purchasing this 3-in-1 box set but as soon as I took it out of the box I was in LOVE. I'm so in love that I only glance through it to admire the artwork and feel of the book and nothing else; therefore, I had to buy the one volume paperback edition for my reading pleasures. Being newly introduced to the Lord of the Rings (thanks to the movies) I must say that has been well worth the money.
Rating: Summary: Lord of the Rings Review: I have read this book 3 times in my life and here I am age 60 ready to read it again and also buying the set for a friend. It is am amazing story of hobbits, elves, wizards, and many creatures of fantasy. A true classic in the finest sense. A tale that lights your imagination on fire! Forget your life and indulge your senses. The movies are not near to coming close to this epic tale.
Rating: Summary: A Brief Report Review: This is a sweeping work. Tolkien's elegant prose gives the reader a grand picture of a world as real as our own. While the events happen in a fantasy setting, there are many profound insights on the realities of life and human nature, as well as many religious insights that reflect upon Tolkien's Catholicism. While the trifold book is hardly light reading, it is well worth the time to read. I highly recommend it to anyone with a little patience.
Rating: Summary: Five stars isn't enough for this brilliant body of work. Review: I love these books. I love these books. I love these books. I am not a fan of science fiction or fantasy as one would typically classify a Tolkien fan. But these stories are classic because the themes are classic--good vs. evil, loyalty, family, love, duty. Only Tolkien can make the reader truly love and identify with such mythical characters such as dwarfs, elves, and hobbits. Within these odd beings, the strengths and weaknesses of humans are characterized. Above all, these stories are epic. No other books make my heart race and my palms sweat like Lord of the Rings. There are moments that I have to close the book just to take it all in. For background, read The Hobbit, another amazing Tolkien classic that is pretty much a prequel to LOTR.
