Rating: Summary: The greatest work of fiction of the twentieth century Review: Put it simply - this is the seminal motherlode of modern fantasy. It is the best work of fantasy ever written and has spawned a great number of imitators. Phrases from the book have become standard aphorisms in comtemporary language. Every year thousands flock to a small village in England hoping to catch a glimmer of a mythology that is so achingly beautiful, it is impossible almost to believe it wasn't real. These have been voted the best books of the last 100 years in virtually every poll ever given on the subject. If these books don't enchant you, you must be dead.
Rating: Summary: Read great books to your Kids Review: For all parents who have taken your children to the newly released "Lord of the Rings", I challenge you to pick up "The Fellowship of the Ring" and read it aloud to your children. This will work best with kids 10 and older. Read a page or two every night at bedtime. I've read through "The Hobbit" twice to our kids, and have read through "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy once to them. Our boys are all teenagers. We read every night for 20-30 minutes. We've also unplugged our TV and replace this time with reading in our home. Tolkein is an excellent storyteller, with vivid descriptions a cinematographer can only begin to play with. Your child's imagination is so much greater than that of any movie maker. Give them the gift of your time and Tolkein's genius writing: Read Tolkein Aloud to your Kids! For two books filled with other creative ideas for parents such as this one, take a look at "The Family Cloister" and "The Christian Family Toolbox", both written by David Robinson.
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: I'm not going to say much here, everyone else has said just about everything. Which, of course, is not near enough, and could never describe the magic of these books! Every time you read it, and re-read it, you find more to amaze you. The only thing wrong with it is there's not enough!
Rating: Summary: My thoughts on the books Review: The movie is amazing. One of the best I've ever seen. And these new versions of the books will get a lot of attention from people who see the movie. Now, that said, these books can be hard to get into. I'm not saying they're bad, they're pretty good, but to the average reader, it might be a little overwhelming if they're not familiar with Tolkien's style. He loves to describe everything to the smallest detail. I'm here to tell you to stick with them. Don't even think of putting the book down. If you do, you'll regret it.
Rating: Summary: The Lord of the Rings (Millennium Edition), a comment Review: This comment relates only to the physical appearance and binding of the The Lord of the Rings (Millennium Edition)box set. I was planning to purchase this set for my son and recently observed two box sets at a local book store. Both sets had irregularities in the size of two of the seven volumes in this set. They were noticeably shorter than the companion volumes, that is, as they sat on the shelf, the binding edges were uneven. The clerk broke the plastic seal so we could inspect the books more carefully and confirmed that they were imperfect. We also observed that the bindings appeared to be second rate, the pages were glued, not stitched, to the binding. Essentially paperback bindings in a mis-matched hard cover. We checked the second set the store had in stock and found the exact same problem with the size of the volumes. Certainly not worth the (...) retail price. Thom Robbin
Rating: Summary: Was the "reader from Spokane" right? Review: No, of course he wasn't, but I find his childish Dungeons and Dragonisms O, so amusing, and I think they are a refreshing water to be dashed (with no doubt pitiful result) on the roaring Tolkien furnace. Of course he is missing out if he has only read the first 130 pages, but really, not everyone HAS to enjoy these, and some of the things in his review remind me of the things that Tolkien himself sometimes says ("I am aware that not everyone will enjoy this, but I have no cause to complain as I have similar opinions of their own works," etc). If the notorious reader from Spokane ever returns to this site, I just want make sure he knows that without The Lord of the Rings his Dungeons and Dragons game would never been invented. Instead of looking at the novels through your Dungeons and Dragons glasses ("Tom Bombadil is such a pathetic NPC") try to step back in time and see these as the stories they were before D&D was ever dreamed of, and dwarves, elves (or, as they were before Tolkien, dwarfs and elfs) and other folk were "mere figures of fun." They seem stereotypical now only because so many other ideas have been based on Tolkien's groundbreaking fantastic. My advice is, Hang in there. Tom Bombadil is not my favorite character either, (though the Barrow-wights are intriguing) but once you get into the main part of the book you'll be able to see how three novels could chase the face of the fantasy genre forever. Reader from Spokane, without this book you'd be reading Snow WHite and Seven Dwarves. Obviously, everything that might be said about the books has already been; it would be superfluous to say that they are the greatest fantasy books ever.
Rating: Summary: Simply the Best Review: J.R.R. Tolkien is a master of fiction with all the detail you can picture everyone in the book. I discovered the Hobbit a while back in third grade when I watched the cartoon I simply fell in love with the book. Then I discovered the Lord of the Rings. Some reviews say the the books make no sense that just shows how little a vocabulary and fanstasy people have. I am pretty young and a avede reader but, I enjoy the series and hope you will to.
Rating: Summary: Still the best! Review: The lord of The Rings is still the best set of books I've ever read, and I know will continue reading them every time I feel like gettin into a marvellous world of fantasy. Tolkien's exciting descriptive writing is wonderful. PLEASE READ THEM!
Rating: Summary: Read the book, then see the movie Review: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is one of the greatest fantasy series ever written. When I first began reading the books, I was swept away into the land of Middle Earth. A land that was on the brink of turmoil - the Ring had been found. A plain gold ring but full of deadly, sinister magic that was a constant reminder of the One who made the Ring and was determined to retrieve it, at whatever cost. So begins the quest of Frodo the hobbit, the adopted heir of Bilbo who some years earlier discovered the Ring. Now Frodo and eight other companions must journey to the land of Mordor. There, it is left to Frodo to destroy the Ring by casting it into the fires of the raging volcano known as Mt Doom. Nine set out but will Nine return? Who or what follow the companions? Dangers, obstacles will be thrown in their path as they journey closer to a land as black and foul as the heart of Sauron the Dark One himself.
Rating: Summary: Responding to Annoying Drivel Review: I am here to let the rest of the world know exactly how extraordinary The Lord of the Rings is. These books, along with the Hobbit made what we call the Fantasy genre, period. Without it, no one would know much besides the passing legends and tales of the times. Tolkien is an absolute genius, and his world is filled with such magic and visualization that at times it leaves you breathless. Now everyone is entitled to their own opinon, but there is no way that The lOrd of the Ring is as was called before, "Annoying Drivel". Everyone I know, even those whom don't like the Fantasy Genre think that it is a classic, magical work of art. Like a Michaelangelo, or a Dali. To deny the fact that it is one of the classics is like denying the Earth is round. To anyone who hasn't read the books yet, ignor such reviews of book from people whom don't even have enough sense to read a complete book before they write a review. That would be like getting into a Historical Debate without even taking a History class in your life. (Besides... I don't think he graduated anyways) Diffently check these books out. They are that good, and wll worth your money and time. Especially if Fantasy is you favorite genre.
