Summary: A bit disappointed...
Review: Disappointed ultimately. Sometimes confusing and over-written considering this is supposed to be a genre of action adventure. Foster's a good writer for some things but frankly verbose for a genre like this--or what was supposed to be a squel to Pitch Black (a fine, fine film). Also agree with other reviewer. Wanted more from Riddick's view.

Summary: Action, Adventure, and Space! What more could you ask for?!
Review: I had this book on pre-order and got it as soon as it was available. I saw the movie first and read the book afterwards. The same day I got the book I read the whole thing because I couldn't put it down. Because director David Twohy had to cut out about 50 minutes of the movie this book helped a lot in filling in the blanks. It goes into MUCH greater detail in the characters and the Necromonger religion and basically everything. I'm a nerd so I like to know all of the details and back history of things and if you're a nerd too you'll love this book!

Summary: Suprisingly good!
Review: I purchased "The Chronicles of Riddick" novel on Tuesday June 1st, started reading it Wednesday June 2nd, and couldn't put it down until I finished it the following day! This is an extremely engrosing storyline that just grabbed my attention from the first page to the last, and other than a few main characters, including Richard Riddick, has absolutelly nothing to do with the first movie, Pitch Black, other than to use is as mearly a means of introduction to these characters. But don't for one second think that this is a bad thing. It is as if the director looked back at Pitch Black and correctly realized that Riddick as a character had much more development and depth than that sci-fi/horror flick could ever have allowed him to flesh out, especially if they followed the first films formula.

The creativity used to develop this new narrative is like an infusion of Arthur C. Clark, Frank Herbert, and Philip K. Dick, with a little George Lucas mixed in for good measure. Some might take this as a pretentous writer/director's attempt at stealing ideas from science fiction literature and claiming them to be his own, but I believe that David Twohy's imagination has been positively FUELED by these great storytellers to concoct a truely gratifying and entertaining tale full of wonder, danger, and intensity! Not since the original Matrix have I felt this kind of kinetic energy from a story, and I haven't even seen the film yet!!!! I feel that "Riddick" has the potential to be a blockbuster! I only hope that the film does do well so that the film makers are able to continue the "Chronicles"! As far as this book is concerned, I would highly recommend any lover of science fiction novels to pick it up and give it a whirl. It may not be as dense and intricatelly interwoven as some of the classics of this genre, but it still seems to have the ability to command your attention and stimulate your imagination!

Highly Recommended!!

Summary: Good Idea, Poor Execution
Review: I'm a writer, so there were several things that annoyed me about this book. I loved the story and will still see the movie, but I don't think Mr. Foster knows what he's doing. For one thing, I don't think he knows what point of view means. I got this book because I thought it would be a way to get into Riddick's head like a movie can't (no matter how many voice-overs there are). Thanks to Mr. Foster, though, the book doesn't help. Every character gets their own point of view splashed all over, with Foster jumping between them until I wasn't sure who was telling me what and when. Then, suddenly, I was in Riddick's head for a paragraph or two but, just as suddenly, I was back out and into some guard's head for the rest of the chapter. Having read the whole book, I still don't know anything more about Riddick except where he came from. While that's great, I really wanted to get a better feel for how the guy thinks and feels. I was trying to learn how to write about a character like Riddick and Mr. Foster failed me in that regard. Anyway, I think the story is an excellent one; it just wasn't written very well and I won't be reading anything else Mr. Foster's written any time soon.

Summary: Great
Review: It is a very good book, I also didn't intend on reading it till after the movie but I couldn't resist. I was really, really, really, really, pissed off at the ending though. I hope the movie doesn't turn out like that.

Summary: Riddick is badass.
Review: Its a great book. Very deep story line and i would recommend you read it before you see the movie to understand the details and what is going on in this epic story. It goes onto Riddick's mysterious past and much more. Read it NOW!

Summary: Great Space Opera - May the Movie be as Good!
Review: Pitch Black is one of my favorite movies, and I've been waiting anxiously for THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. When I picked up the novelization I didn't plan on reading it until I'd seen the movie. I hate spoilers (and will not add any here)! But I let myself read one page, then another -- and the next thing I knew I'd finished the thing. It didn't read like a typical novelization, but as an intelligent, multi-layered science fiction novel. All right, it lacked character depth, but that's something that really is the perogative of the actors and director of the movie to provide. After all, the book is the fleshing out of a script, and likely an early draft of the script. I highly recommend this book as a book, and not as just another movie-tie in purchase for Riddick fans.

Summary: My Thoughts
Review: Saw the movie really didn't get it. Now that I read the book I understand it. Ties up some of the loose ends too.

Overall-Really good read thanks to Allen Dean Foster
