Rating: Summary: My all-time without a doubt favorite book. Review: For me, this book is the standard by which all others, no matter the field, are judged. I have no doubt that I am a different, a BETTER, person for having read this book. I'm not saying you'll like it , I'm not saying it will change your life...
...but it sure did mine.
Oh, I have English Profs. who will say that the style is not as eloquent as THE GREAT BOOKS. I don't care. Nothing that that hack Shakespeare ever wrote touched me so deeply. If you have an open mind and are looking for a book that will make you think, I give it my highest recomendation. ( But I would go with the shorter version..I've read both and didn't find the longer one to be better...)
Rating: Summary: Two Books In One -- Too Bad the First One is Better Review: The first half of thisbook is marvelous, with extremely entertaining characters and a suspenseful plot. Sadly, Heinlein is so intent on expressing Michael Valentine Smith's worldview that the second half of the book describes Mike's attempt to found a church based on hippy ideas about free love and the like. The premise is fascinating, but the end is so preposterous that it really degrades the entire work. I don't challenge the worldview (although I don't agree with it), but I am dismayed by the simplistic way in which Heinlein executes it. A good book, but not nearly what it could have been. Of course, I have not read the shortened version -- I have a feeling the editors were correct in the beginning
Rating: Summary: A painless moral allegory Review: Heinlein exercises his usual skill in slipping in a mixture of social and political commentary mixed with clearly defined characters and, in this case, a smoothly blended allegory. He explores a near future society through the eyes of an innocent "Martian" , a cynical newsman and an even more cynical writer (Jubal Harshaw). His critiques of some trends in our current society are biting yet fun to read. The overall theme shows the gradual education of the innocent Michael Smith in the mores of society, including commercialized religion, political manipulation and sex. All of this is done with Heinlein's usual skill at telling you about a major technical breakthrough by implication. There is something for everyone in this book, and it can be read at several levels.
Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: This Book Actually Changed My Life Review: I can't add much to the accolades already expressed, except to show the extent to which this book helped change my life. Based on Mike's teachings, the book "Life After Life" by Dr. Thomas Moody, and various other books of diverse subjects, I started a church. (I hurry to add that we were not cannibals!) It was an experiment in total trust and peace. Because of church members moving away, the church shrank away to nothing. But the members were changed in a fundamental way. Read this book and imagine how good our world could be..
Rating: Summary: The Editors Got it Right the First Time Review: I read the edited version of this one years ago, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I read the "new" version, then re-read my old faithful, and ... lo and behold ... the editors really did know what they were doing when they made RAH chop 50K words out of an already-wordy manuscript. The additions are cheap and filler. The main story survives in all its wonder, but one begins to grok the need for editing
Rating: Summary: Easily the best book I have ever read. Review: This book is amazing because it contains almost as much truth as it does fantasy. There are actually churches based on the Heinleinian philosophies which are so subtly presented here. I have read this book enough times to actually wear out two paperback copies. Every time I read it I get more out of it. Most importantly of all, though: give this book to someone and it will make them *think*!
Drink Deeply.
Rating: Summary: Read this book Review: Even if you don't agree with all of the views taken in this book, it's certainly food for thought. I tended to like Jubal Harshaw the most in the book, and after Mike lost his innocence, he got annoying, but this book is one of the best I've ever read, along with Catcher In The Rye, and a few others. I highly recommend this book
Rating: Summary: ...a distinctive master piece; a true work of art. Review: I read my first Heinlein book at age 15 and now, 7 years later, with each Robert Heinlein piece I read, I gain a greater appreciation for his unique style; a compelling mixture of intellectualism and optimism. "Stranger in a Strange Land" is my favorite Heinlien work. He gifted his characters with quirkey, lovable personalities and wove a plot that is both entertaining and uplifting. Robert A. Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" is a distinctive master piece; a true work of art
Rating: Summary: A must read for anyone who is able! Review: That's right, if you can read then you have no excuse why youhaven't read this book. Simply a masterpeace of modern times,Heinlein has captured all of the wit and meaning that has prompted most of us to start to read in the first place. If you only read one book in your lifetime, this should be it.
Rating: Summary: One of the most impressive books of the century.. Review: Well, what can I say? Hardly a day goes by that I don't see or hear something that reminds me of the book. It's probably not possible to get through it without having your mind opened to ideas you didn't think possible. I would like to say, however, that the newer, longer version of Stranger is WELL worth it. Mr. Heinlein did a good job of shortening the book 30 years ago, but that version doesn't hold a candle to the "real" one. It makes the work just that much deeper, and is rewarding to even those who know the book well
