Summary: "Stranger in a Strange Land" falls pathetically short.
Review: Although there is no doubt that Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" was and is a profoundly influential science-fiction/pop-philosophy book, the actual content of this pulp-fiction-like novel is less than inspiring. Heinlein's character Valentine Michael Smith, the Martian-raised human, could have provided unique insight upon the world in which we live, but instead he draws the sorts of conclusions that provoke neither thought nor visions of a grander universe. At best, Michael preaches a hippie-Jesus free-love philosophy, but at worst (and most often) he preaches the objectification of women, a narrow definition of "normal" sexuality, and a stiffly heirarchical universe. Indeed, "preach" is an accurate word to describe Heinlein's writing. Most characters are shallow and uninteresting (or unintelligent) or else paternal and condescending (yet ostensibly brilliant) resulting in the sinking feeling that one is attending a kind of warped sunday school class. The entire read is a frustrating experience. The most complimentary thing I can say about this novel is that it does, in fact, have deep (and unsubtle)parallels to Christianity which are sometimes fun to note. It does not make up for the fact that "Stranger in a Strange Land" falls pathetically short of a truly revelutionary piece of work.

Summary: No thanks!
Review: Empowered by a keen awareness of a pantheistic universe, our hero creates a utopian cult that engages in sexual orgies and cold-blooded murder. Goodness is doing what you want, love is essentially selfish, and humor is another word for nihilism. No thanks! For another (better) take on the encounter between innocent Martians and humans, try _Out of the Silent Planet_. For real love, try _Les Miserables_. For insight on humor, try _The Screwtape Letters_.

Summary: An extremely good and thought provoking novel.
Review: This book is the single most thought provoking novel that I have ever read. It forces you to look at humanity through they eyes of Michael Valentine Smith - a Martian raised human. Incredibly thought inspiring and impossible to put down.

Let Heinlein take you on a journey through a place so horrible, so wretched and yet so wonderful that no other author could show. Your very own soul.

Summary: LOVED IT
Review: I loved this book even though many people out there would think I was to young (12) to understand this book they are quite wrong. One thing I totally disagreed with was a lot of people said this book was sexist. In the last fourth of the book (after Mike starts his religion) it is impossible for it to be sexist ,maybe you thought it was in the first part but I disagree, in that religion physical traits don't matter so being sexist is impossible.

Summary: Disappointing.
Review: This book fails to dig deeply enough into any aspect. If Heinlein is trying to showcase the philosophy (and the taste offered is interesting) he needs to focus on it instead of just giving us glimpses. If Heinlein's trying to entertain us, he needs to have more of interest happen. If he's trying to explore the characters we need to see *inside* them more.

My impression from reading this book is that someone had taken a great novel, cut a thin slice from it, and published it separately.

Summary: Too much
Review: This work is considered one of the classic Science Fiction books of all time. I didn't argue; I didn't know it when I first read it. Perhaps for the day and the next night after, I spent a while thinking about Mr. Heinlien's philosopies and to that effect I feel nothing. Based on my rate of this book is enough. I feel if Mr. Heinlien has written it and published it and puts justification along with it, I'm inclined to give him my open opinion. However, in times past, I have recognized some misgivings. These are left to me and maybe another person will find what's right for them and should give an honest reading in the mind and not out loud.

Summary: The best heinlein book one of the best books I've read
Review: the book is a masterpese, it expertly combibes philosophy humor and action. This is NOT a simple book to understand and should be reread at least twice. (you find new things every time) This is hardcore philosophy/fiction. In my opnion people who gave it a bad review simply did not get it. I feel sorry for them

Summary: Didn't hold my interest
Review: I only read this book because it is "one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time". I don't think so. I liked the characters in the story, but it just went on and on... I could not keep reading after the 500th page or so, it did not hold my interest.

Summary: I expected more...
Review: I could say that this book has dissapointed me. I expected more.I tried to finish it, but I didn't make it. Soon it became rather boring although the story seemed to be promising in the beginning. Pity.

Summary: Science Fiction?I don't think so,but-
Review: I was truly impressed with the insights into humanity given in Stranger In A Strange Land. The insight into laughter is truly thoughtful. The idea behind what and who is truly God might be hard to grok at first, but it can really hit home. The book is highly reflective as social commentary and insight into humanity-but the science-fiction element is relatively insignificant. This is a very good book nontheless, and does what good science fiction writers do...use the science-fiction premise, but provides fascinating human interest while doing so.
