Summary: An epiphany
Review: Let me just say that the book is much better than the movie...even though the movie is still great (if it weren't for the movie, I'd have never discovered Palahniuk). The book goes into more detail on Project Mayhem, and some of the parts are just left out of the movie (good parts, at that). After you read this you'll be asking yourself before you buy anything "Do I really NEED this?"

Summary: Perhaps...
Review: the movie ruined the book for me. Perhaps, but not neccessarily.

Of course, take the fact that Edward Norton read the book to me (I could not keep his narrations out of my head). And I couldn't picture the characters any other way than the way they were portrayed in the film.

Perhaps I should have read the book first, but I think I would have still been disappointed with the ending, being that it varies quite differently from the movie.

I was pleased with the way the movie takes a lot of the narrator word for word. I was displeased with some of the scenes left out and changed.

Overall, a great read if you haven't seen the movie.

Summary: book better than movie, but movie good nonetheless
Review: When Fight Club first came out in theaters, a lot of people said that they hated it. Well, i wanted to find out first-hand so instead of going to the theater, I just waited until it came out on video and bought it. It's my favorite movie and I can't get enough of it. BUT, the book was more entertaining and a lot better. In case you were too lazy to watch the movie or read the book, this is how it goes: There's this guy(who's name isn't revealed) who has insomnia and he's sort of like an outcast. He doesn't like his job and he keeps buying stuff from Ikea to make his apartment perfect. Well, one day on an airplane flight he meets Tyler Durden, a soap salesman. When the guy's apartment blows up, he moves in with Tyler. Then, they both create an underground organization called Fight Club, which is a form of therapy where guys go to after work and beat each other senseless. There's more to it but I won't say anymore. I highly recommend this book and movie.

Summary: Palahniuk is a genius! Tyler Durden is my alter ego!
Review: Wow! Where to start? First I'd like to clear up that Fight Club isn't for your average angry testosterone male. Infact quite the contrary. The author presents an often pessimistic, but very true perspective on overall society, making it not only a rollar coaster ride through the mind of Tyler Durden but a constantly flowing story that'll keep the most finicky reader on edge. If you had to watch the movie at least twice to get it's full message, you're not the only one, and believe me you'll have to read the BOOK 10 times at least to grasp the full extent of Palahniuk. If you take the time to read this book, you will find that a Tyler Durden dwells in each and every one of you to some degree, and to discover that is frighening and exciting at the same time..

Summary: A very rare occurance
Review: In a world where every movie based off a book is far inferior to it's namesake, Fight Club breaks the mold. Whether it's because the movie is so awesome, or the book is so-so, I really couldn't tell you. But spend your money on the DVD Edition of Fight Club and just get the book from the libraray. Or shoplift it. You'll be glad you did.

Summary: Great movie, better book
Review: I saw the movie when it first came out, and it was the first time that I was able to put a finger on the frustration of living. Since then, I've seen the movie no less than 50 times, and have the DVD copy. After reading the book in about 4 hours straight, I couldn't decide which I preferred. But I finally decided the book was better. As is true in most novel-transferred scripts, the book's events are condensed and combined in order to fit the length. But the movie loses something in the translation. The characters are more beliveable in the book, and there's no feel-good ending in the book like there is in the movie. And without going into too much detail, it's regrettable that the movie didn't stick to the truly harsher elements of Project Mayhem. It was shocking to see how far they would go in the book, something that's not made clear in the movie. And I like the book version of Marla much better too. Her actions follow the personality of someone who's insanely suicidal.

All in all, even if you didn't like the movie, I recommend the book. Especially if you're want to experience the movie's meaning without the visual violence that's shown in the movie.

Summary: Dummy's book on how to beat oneself up in two easy steps
Review: This book has recently come out as a movie I've heard, so I won't divulge too much about the contents because it will spoil the book/movie for you. May I PLEASE suggest ONE small thing if you're thinking of seeing Fight club? Please! Read the BOOK FIRST! I beg of you because even though the book and movie are supposed to be almost the same (and I can't vouch for this having not seen the film yet), apparently, my girlfriend who read it and saw it said the movie did leave an awful lot of detail out. She said it concerned the bomb making part and some other pertinent area's not shown on the movie were in the book. I'm so sorry. I do hope I'm making sense here. After a long day at work, you tend to have brain farts at 3A.M. Seriously though, I'm not usually one for violent books of any kind, especially if they involve animals but this book is about a group of boys/men who group together and make themselves into a FIGHT CLUB. Tyler is the leader. His friend (Jack???) is Tyler's right hand man and Tyler is dating a girl named Marla. I won't tell you how they all met because that's the fun part for you to find out. I will say, the way they meet is rather funny in my eyes so all I can suggest to everyone, please read the book and then, watch the movie on television because by then, it will probably be on cable :-) Also, as an extra treat for you all, my friend told me, as Tyler's friend Jack, starts acting errrr, weird, if you watch the movie very carefully, about eight times, you can see a flash of Tyler Durdan pop up for about a half second. My daughter saw the movie over her friend's house the other night on one of those pay to view channels and they both watched the movie with their eyes glued to the screen. Sure enough, they saw Tyler flash up for a split second in RED! What the flashes are (we think) are subliminal thoughts in Jack's head because he really wants Tyler there with him but Tyler isn't ready to make his appearance with his buddy yet so once in a great while, he will suddenly appear next to Jack in a flash and always in the color RED so he's dead easy to see apparently. Well, sorry I'm rambled. This is NOT a book for the elderly, squeamish (lot of blood) or people who upset easily watching physical abuse. If you do decide to watch FIGHT CLUB...please please please, read the book first!!! I promise you, you're seeing it in a whole different light as I plan to myself. Now, here for your viewing pleasure is the areas that Tyler (Brad Pitt) is supposed to appear briefly in a flash. I'm sorry; I have not been given all of them so watch for them too. They only occur BEFORE Ed Norton (Jack), physically meets Tyler. What's supposed to be happening is that Tyler is beginning to meld into Jacks life thus the flashes? Please also remember the flashes are super fast so please keep your eyes glued wide open for the first portion of the film BEFORE Ed meets Brad in real life in the movie. 1) When Ed Norton is first shown photocopying and talking about his insomnia, a bloke with a cart walks past, you will see the ghost of Tyler holding the fight club instructions. 2) When Ed is talking to his doctor, Tyler flashes up. 3) At the support group ends, and Ed's outside. 4) Outside the support group as Ed watches Marla walk down a corridor. 5) Now, this one's really hard to see. When Ed is in the hotel watching TV about the hotel, in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, Tyler is standing in a uniform with the rest of the hotel staff. Well, good luck and I hope you find them. Many of my club members seem to think it's a subliminal message to show that Tyler was being created! Okay, enough of that. Please read the book too! I recommend reading it first for full impact. Once you've read the book, you'll be absolutely itching to see the movie. Take my word on this one PLEASE! Denise

Summary: This Book Burned My Soul
Review: This book is not for the faint of heart! That said, I implore everyone to read it.

I picked up this book because it looked kooky and interesting. Kooky doesn't begin to describe it. The novel follows the exploits of two men (or does it?) and the underground club they form where regular men voluntarily beat each other into a pulp in front of a crowd. Sounds kinda like boxing, except that there are no referees, no rules, and no one is allowed to speak about Fight Club. Oh yeah, and the true devotees are required to embark on bizarre and destructive missions all in the name of Project Mayhem. Plus, they make homemade soap which they then sell to ritzy department stores--if you read the book, you'll love the irony of this. Add to this an insane and suicidal "love" interest and you've got yourself one mixed up bunch of characters.

The plot really isn't as important as the style. It is written from the perspective of one of the fight club founders who just happens to be an insomniac and the jumpy, incoherent shifting from topic to topic really gets the reader in the narrator's brain. The night I finished this book, I dreamed I was living it and woke up in a cold sweat.

I highly, highly recommend this book. It will change the way you see reality.

Summary: Just like the movie.
Review: Except for where the original supply of fat came from. And that part about Joni Mitchell's skeleton.

Summary: The wonderful world of self destruction
Review: Yes, another review by someone moved by the movie and now has gone back and read the book. And, as usual, the book is better. Palahnuik's book is a great social commentary on the spiritual void of today and his views on how people can find self fulfillment in self destruction has an uncanny appeal to it. Who wants to die without any scars? People want to do something with they're lives, and waiting tables is less than something. So, through self infliction you can find self identification. Palahnuik's book is full of humor such as Joe and his various organs and where/how they make the soap, just a big smirk the whole way through. Also there's a final irony in that a book that talks so much about being more than your possessions, you 'chuck' out over $10 for it, and it's a little more than a short story (200 pages, fairly large type, simple sentence structures and alot of the stuff you read at the beginning is repeated later) which is a final kicker, laugh at yourself.
