Summary: One of the best sci fi books/technothrillers I've ever read
Review: Wow! I've read a lot of sci fi books and technothrillers, and this is one of the very best. Funny, great plot, great characters, a truly enjoyable read. Much better than his Snow Crash, which was also very good.

Summary: Delicious...
Review: I've been inquiring at various book counters about new Neal Stephenson books for 2+ years now, to no avail. Having read his other offerings, I was anxious to get another fix.

I could not have been more satisfied by "Cryptonomicon". Stephenson's tongue-in-cheek style is in the same class as Douglass Adams - at times I laughed so hard that it drew looks from neighbors. His ability to braid several intricate plotlines is up there with Tom Clancy - I lost track of the time more than once. If the rumors are true, then "Cryptonomicon" is only the beginning of a wonderful series in the same lofty strata as Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" (and hopefully more frequent!).

The characters are likable. The plotlines are thick and crisp, making it easy to read 900 pages without gasping for air. The sarcasm and irony are rich and quite tasty. Even the technical detail and analyses are a joy to read! I never really considered the relationship between sex and my productivity, but now that you mention it... ...kinda makes me glad that I don't have a 747 hanging from my ceiling, y'know?

Don't wait - get the book. Savor every last encryption-encrusted bit.

PS: Yes, the typos do contain an encrypted message - and the book itself is a one-time pad. First, find all of the typos. There are several - enough for a complete sentence. Then start on the 39th line of page 209, 11th character from the right, and then skipping letters in a Fibonacci series... ...well, I'll let YOU figure it out.

Summary: Excellent story telling.
Review: Hard to tell what's fact or fiction, compelling reading. His first two novels are next on my list. Great mix of technology, history, geography and character development. Very enjoyable.

Summary: wild and enjoyable
Review: i cant believe i read the whole thing! awesome talespinning! so engrossing that you forget how heavy the 900 page tome weighs, but wonderfully fulfilling all the way through. this is a great book! very masterfully crafted and great narration.

Summary: A fun and interesting read
Review: Each of Neal Stephenson books are unique, entertaining and educational (oh, no watch out for learning!). Cryptonomicon keeps the trend going.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: take out the "modern-day" bit and you have Gravity's Rainbow
Review: Good book, almost great. Although Cryptonomicon divides its time between the 90s and the 40s, I'd have settled for the 40s. Stephenson is an exceptionally intelligent writer, however, and we can safely expect even better things to come.

Summary: Enjoy this book for what it is.
Review: This book is not another Snow Crash or Diamond Age, but Stephenson remains true to the vision encapsulated in those two titles. Cryptonomicon represents a translation of the common elements of Stephenson's earlier works into an enjoyable and well conceived contemporary world. The well drawn picture of the political and cultural economy of South East Asia is a perfect bridge between the fledgling information society of today and the possibilities of the cyberpunkish virtual economies of tomorrow. There is no need for a suspension of disbelief with this novel.

The key points which seem to have polarised other reviews - the roles of women and sex and the extended set piece tableaus - are of little consequence, facts rather than flaws. There is not a single out of place chapter in this book, each contributes to the slightly convoluted plot and the superbly witty characterization. True, there are no strong female roles, but all of the characters are there to tell a beleivable and engrossing story, and do so admirably

Those concerned about the high incedence of masturbatory anecdote in Cryptonomicon should consult George Steiner's After Babel for a glimpse of the parallels between literary endeavour and masturbation: all writers are w***ers.

Cryptonomicon is gritty and gripping, boy's own adventure with an undeniable Stephenson twist. The characters are likeable (even with their oft mentioned misogynisitic outlooks) and 900 plus pages is barely enough to begin their story. Looking at the bigger picture, I'm under the impression that this is the first part of a trilogy. I certainly hope that this is the case and cannot wait for more of Stephenson's keenly observed, and above all entertaining, visions of the evolution of human society from a distinctly human (i.e. imperfect) point of view.

Cryptonomicon is definitely good SF, sometimes tongue in cheek, a pleasure to read and thought provoking if you want it to be. Thoroughly recommended. (I'm sure the typos are a code, too).

Summary: Excellent and intriguing
Review: A story that crosses time and involved thinking. This might be the new edge of science fiction writing. I also recommend Doherty's AREA 51 series of books or Donegan's ATLANTIS book which promises to launch an intriguing new series.

Summary: Great novel, I loved it
Review: Reading The Triumph and the Glory has got me interested in WWII and when I heard about Cryptonomicon I ordered it from Amazon right away. Wow! It is quite a book. I was pulled right into the plot and didn't come up for air for almost what, 1000 pages ? I haven't read any of Stepehnsonson's other stuff but I plan to now, he can really tell a story. Excellent!

Summary: A 900 page "quick read"?
Review: Oddly enough, yes. Compelling characters, elegantly inter-woven plots, and a fascinating suject matter (crypotgraphy) help. But what really kept my interest was Stephenson's ability to not just illuminate cryptography and hacking, but to take the peculiar approach to thinking imbedded in both "fields" and look at the rest of life (sex, relationships, friendship, pesky inheritance allocations, and so on) through those lenses.
