Rating: Summary: These books get funnier with every read! I loved them all! Review: the story begins on earth, but within the first few pages Adams leaves that premace behind by blowing the earth up to create space for a intergalacticle super highway! The main characters, Arthur Dent--one of the last humans alive, Zafod Beeblebrox--the ex-president of the universe, Ford Perfect--a hitchiker of the galaxy, marvin--the clinically depressed robot, and the rest of the universe begin their jorney through the galaxy to find their "purposes" in life? These books are hillariously funny, and they get more amusing with ever read. Douglas Adams has created a marvelous universe, and an all time classic if I have ever seen one.
Rating: Summary: It's greeeeat! Review: This is simply, the #1 book of all times...The full version of all five books in the trilogy, plus a bonus story...WAOW.
Rating: Summary: Should be required reading. An unbelievably funny series! Review: I have the whole series in seperate paper backs. Worn out and dog eared from the repeated useage, the hard cover version with all the stories is well worth it. Just when life is getting a little too serious, Arthur, Ford and Zaphod prove just how screwy the universe really is. And hey- we all have digital watches so how can it be so bad, right? Buy it for your kids. Buy it for yourself. Everyone I've shared these books with agrees that they are wonderfully strange and very, very funny. (Except the last one, "Mostly Harmless". Use it for kindling).
Rating: Summary: Funny, Engaging, But Overrated Review: It's rather difficult to review this book without ruining it for the rest of you, and I certainly don't want to do that, so forgive me if I'm vague on some points...Anyway, Book #1 of the series is GREAT but ONLY once you get used to it. Adams has an odd style of writing -- but once you realize that this is meant to be humorous, not philosophical, it is absolutely hilarious. Book #2 is also wonderful, perhaps even better than the original. However, it's a bit downhill from there. Books #3 and #4, while still OK, just aren't that great. Don't get me wrong, I normally would have been happy to read anything of that caliber - but coming after the first two books, they were rather 'empty'. Finally, book #5, Mostly Harmless. Although this one was (in my opinion) much funnier than #3 and #4, it was also as at least as confusing as anything my economics textbook has to offer. To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure what happenned at the end. Still, it was pretty good (as long as you don't mind re-reading passages every now and again). So, as a whole, I would recommend "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide" to any fan of humor or science fiction. However, please realize that, though the novels are hilarious, they don't have much of a plot and they aren't exaclty thought-provoking. It's still a good read -- just not as great as its reputation.
Rating: Summary: wonderfully funny quick read. Couldnt put it down! Review: Thats about all I just wanted to put a good word or two in. My mother bought the book for me and I read the first three books in a day. Adams is hilarious.
Rating: Summary: Very good indeed... Review: Could there possibly be a better way to spend fifteen bucks? I very much doubt it. There's just something about this series--somehow, I find it very comforting when I'm feeling depressed. Actually, the first time I read these books I liked them, but I wouldn't say I loved them. It was only when I reread them that I realized how great they were. The short story's pretty much dispensable, but hey, it's a free bonus, innit? Also, the end of Mostly Harmless is none too cheerful. Anyone else get the impression that ol' Doug was in a bad mood at the time? Still, you need this.
Rating: Summary: Best Book in The World!!!! Review: I love it! Including the whole series... it's just excellent ... I love it!
Rating: Summary: A hilarious book about bumbling through the universe Review: This book is a great book to read on the subway, train, commute, etc. It requires absoloutely no thought, and usually induces such behavior. Most parts are absoloutely hilarious, and Douglas Adams does a good job of making the story relatively easy to follow, and always fun. Good from ages about 12 and up, I'd recommend that everyone read this book at some point in their lives, as it's certainly a great comedy book. If you disagree, feel free to eMail me and I'll tell you why you're wrong. =-)-TD
Rating: Summary: The ultimative answer of Life, the Universe and Everything. Review: I first bought this book in London in 1986, at that time it was "A Thrilogy in four Parts" - since I've been lost in the world of our friends: Arthur, Ford Prefect, Trillian and Zaphod ! The book is zani humor, wellwritten and very philosifical in a satirical way. The best book I've ever read - but it's heavy stuff to read in bed !!!
Rating: Summary: While traveling through Europe this trilogy hit the spot. Review: While reading this book, i began to think back maybe ten years ago, when I believe I heard this story on the radio. Originally it was a BBC broadcasting. I wonder if you can still get this book on cassette or cd? It is a must read if you are into wacky, British dry humor. Adams has a special knack for commenting correctly on society on the whole. He is brilliant.
