Summary: Well-written, but I disagree with the philosophy
Review: This book has been recommended to me by several people over the years, and so I finally bought and read it. It's a well written book, a very interesting work of fiction. But I completely disagree with Ayn Rand's philosophy. The lengthy speeches also get to be a bit tedious, the gigantic radio speech made towards the end made me just about pass out from boredom - it seemed to be just the same words all the other characters had spewed out in all of their individual speeches, just strung along and coming out of one character's mouth. Thanks for the recap, Ayn, but I read the words fine the first time.

Otherwise, I am fond of Dagny Taggert's character. For some reason I like her practical and "Ice Queenish" outlook on life - this character is quite opposite from me and she was presented well enough that I felt like I could see this world through her eyes. I'm just grateful the world in this book doesn't exist, at least not to this extreme degree.

There is some good social commentary in there, and some things that will (or at least should) make you think. But, it's fiction, and I don't see the real world going this way anytime soon.

Summary: A lesson in writing
Review: I've based this review on the incredible writing style, pacing, and plot development. While Ayn Rand is perhaps best known for her philosophy, I am very much taken by her writing abilities. Whether or not you agree with her premise, Atlas Shrugged is a well written character study, and an engrossing read. If you are an aspiring author, you will do well to study her style.

Summary: a good book, even for young readers
Review: This book is probly the best book I have read all year. I am only 16, and it drew me in, to the point where i couldn't put it down. There are parts in it wher you just get so mad at the characters, and in others where it does get a little comfusing, but if you keep reading, you will come ot understand what she is talking about.

Summary: A bad sci-fi, and worse philosophy
Review: Well, i was expecting some sort of philosophical reading from the much hyped lady here, and what we have got is a sci-fi - with no head or tail, or whatsoever. The lady here goes beyond all the limits to examplify the philosophy she preached. For any serious philosophy lover, there is nothing to find here, just nothing, and its even worse for any fiction lover!!

This is the example of how bad one can go when not prepared for overwhelmed response to one's work or self. Atlas Shrugged ends up in a melodramatic high budget hollywood stunt movie with bad guys losing and our hero ( rather, a bunch of heroes - so many that you can not keep up with the count )winning in the end. And boy..!! what a philosophical reading..!!

An anti-climax after a decent work of Fountainhead by the same auther. The worst part of the book ( or work ? ) is 60 pages of a speech..!! Just that you have already finished some 300 pages, you have to finish the rest, and thats how you finish the book.

Ayn Rand died for me with this book. Loved by those who wants to show off, to be counted in - in the "Intellectual bracket", just like some of her own characters!!

Summary: a good point-but a LONG speech
Review: i like this book-i was immediately sucked it to the life of Dagny Taggart and Hank Rearden. I was disapointed with John Galt's speech at the end of the book-although it carried with it a great point-i thought it was about 50 pages too long.

Summary: A laugh riot
Review: Here's the idea: There is only one correct way for people to relate to the world around them, and that's through reason. There's only one correct way for people to relate to other people, and that's through reason. Those who understand this are superior to everyone else in every human endeavor, including making hamburgers. The rest are just annoying obstacles, also-rans. The joke is that Rand explains all of this in the context of an incredibly bad science fiction novel, thus placing herself squarely in the camp of the also-rans by her own definition. Whatever the merits of the philosophy, having the main character explain them in a 60-page speech is just a wretched plot device. And the philosophy ultimately reduces to a tautology, although it takes an awful long time to do so.

Summary: Great Book but what's with the ending?
Review: I just stopped at page 955 and must say that I'm probably not going to finish it - up until now, I thought that this book was the best book ever written (and I still think it's great) - but I was disappointed with the ending, in that Dagny makes a bizarre decision in her personal life (I won't give it away) that seems to me goes against the integrity of the whole story and the point. This decision makes her character seem fickle and weak - when all through the book, her strength of character and beliefs are what keeps her going (this is the only reason I won't give the book 5 stars). I think Ayn Rand should have used Dagny to represent pure perserverence instead of having her character make a 360 with her personal life (after 900+ pages I was hoping for a slightly different ending)

Summary: The Greatest Book of All Time
Review: I know most of you will think I am to young to be reading Atlas Shrugged, but I did. The opinions, characters, and everything else in this book was absolutly great. Everyone who is considering buying this book: BUY IT!!! It is great. Everyone who made those horrible reveiws, I suggest reading it again and paying more attention this time.

Summary: Greatest Masterwork Ever!
Review: Rand's Atlas Shrugged is the greatest artistic acheivement in the history of mankind. It's theme and plot are masterfully integrated. Each choice of the author's was made to further the examine the theme and to identify a new aspect of it. Each integral sub-theme was demonstrated enough to prove it, all the while moving the plot ever closer to it's triumphant climax. Rand succeeds in her life's goal to portray the ideal man. Secondary to this goal was the formulation of her unique philosophy of Objectivism - in which she defines a rational code of ethics based on an uncompromising dedication to reason in epistemology. Not only will Atlas Shrugged change your life, it will change the world.

Summary: One of the most influential books ever written.
Review: My experience with Ayn Rand began with my AP English teacher begging me to read the Fountainhead. A beginner to her Objectivist Philosophy, I quickly fell in love with her writing. I am only 17 years old and I feel as if Atlas Shrugged has forever changed my life. In our non-individualistic world today, Rand's characters are very much impossible to find. After reading Atlas Shrugged, I feel as if I have to strive to be someone like her characters. I believe, like myself, many others have felt this way after reading this incredible story. We may not be able to "stop the motor of the world," but we certainly can try. I believe this book is a most read for all young adults, especially those in high school and college. This book is a lesson in the importance of thought and reason. In some aspects (especially in high school) the individual and his freedom of thought is not welcome because of social attitudes and overall ignorance on others parts. I can proudly say that this book has brought out the best there is in me. I AM AN INDIVIDUAL. I will never again rely on another man or woman instead of thinking for myself and following my own judgment. I recommend that anyone who has any true values and is a rational being should read this book. If you read Atlas Shrugged and cannot understand why I or anyone else love this book, than you are not a person of true values. In Rand's written words: " I swear- by my life and my love of it- that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine."
