Rating: Summary: Wonderful book with wonderful characters and adventures! Review: My brothers introduced The Hobbit to me when I was 11 years old. I am now 34 with a 7 year old son. I am in the process of reading a chapter a night to him before he goes to bed. So far we are at the part where Bilbo finds the Ring and my son is constantly asking me, "What happens next, Momma? Give me a hint." I can hardly wait until we start on the Lord of the Ring series.
Rating: Summary: A COMPLETELY SWEET BOOK Review: The book "The Hobbit" Has me inspired to read many more of his books!
Rating: Summary: Nothing like it Review: These books among the greatest treasures of my life. If you are looking for non-stop action, or characters who are probed and explored in minute detail, turn elsewhere. If you are looking for a beautiful book, one which evokes both the glory of nature and the strength of the human spirit, or for an imaginary world of unparalleled scale, vividness, and depth, try the Lord of the Rings.
Rating: Summary: Tolkien, the lord of fantasy Review: All Fantasy writers owe a great deal of debt to Mr. Tolkien. The lord of the Rings embodys all the classic elements of fantasy writing...and he created the standart. The amazing thing about these books are that when I was fourteen I loved them, and now that I am finishing my degree in English Lit. I have learned to love them again. The depth and consistency of Tolkiens middle earth is really astounding, as well as the classic characters and gripping epic battles. I highly recomend the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and all the works Christopher Tolkien edited of his fathers vast universe.
Rating: Summary: Tolkien is the Homer of Fantasy Review: What Homer is for ancient mythology, Tolkien is for modern fantasy. Although these books were written more than fifty years ago, they are still unsurpassed. Most later fantasy books are pretty much imitations of the Tolkien universe.
Rating: Summary: Excellent ! Review: As I am French, I first discovered this book in French. I was a little anxious of how I might find the original version. I am now reading it in English and, so far... it is merely as perfect in English as it is in French ! I see this book as the best one I ever read. I really appreciate the way the author invents a word when he needs it, and therefore creates his own language as well as his own world.
Rating: Summary: Your life isn't complete unless you read this series! Review: My brothers introduced me to these books when I was a little girl an I CAN'T GET OFF OF THEM! These books are great, but you can't just read halfway through one book and then decide whether it's good or not. Read the WHOLE SERIES, or you won't ever understand the true meaning of fantastic literature! Don't let others fool you. THESE BOOKS ARE GREAT!!!!!! (But the Bible beats them any day of the week)
Rating: Summary: possibly, the most amazing creation of a fantasy world Review: There is no other place to look, and all fantasies, for the next 100 years, will be judged against what Tolkien has achieved. Beyond the scope of imagination exhibited here, what is MOST impressive is the HUMAN element he brings to these stories...there is the pathos of Aristotelian tragedy expressed here, and it deserves to be placed among the legends of Greek/Roman mythology. There is a world created here, and the reader is completetly immersed by the end of a single episode. Highly recommended.
