Rating: Summary: The Epitome of what fantasy is and will always be Review: I remember reading this series when I was in grade school, and sadly had the books "appropriated" by a school chum, who shall always be a bane in my life. The books weave a fantastic yarn of what fantasy is supposed to create in our imaginations, a realm that is as vivid picture in our minds as what we could see on the television. Tolkien is a master story teller that will never be equaled with his ability to conjure up the images of a time and place that may have been or is far from the here and now. You grip the edge of you seat, wondering what will happen, and I have read these books many times, and still get new information with each reading. It is a classic story, of good battling against evil, where even the hero has to stop and look at himself. Truly a must read for anyone who wants to start into the genre.
Rating: Summary: No author now sets a great story like Tolkein did. Review: One of the main reason's Tolkein is my favorite author is because he makes his books exetremely detailed while throwing you off track when you least expect it. Also the reason why The Ring Trilogy is my most favorite series is because most books out right now just give you something that you can predict what is going to happen. He also makes The Enemy so powerful but the good guys so weak you can't see anyway they could possibly win. But he does it! In my opinon this book is great!!! Anyone that doesn't like it is below the intellegence to understand this. I give it ten stars!!!
Rating: Summary: Genesis of fantasy Review: A masterpiece that will survive through eternity. There is nothing to say but that The Lord Of The Rings and what is relevant to it is the ultimate fantasy creation ever born in our world. You don't read this during your life then I'm sorry for you. This book is my litterature bible and it is for millions of others, like you and me. Tolkien is the origin of what you know now about what is fantastic, and you can't understand this until you read The Lord Of The Rings. It is so complete, but so still incomplete, with all those unanswered questions left to the reader. When Tolkien left, it's been a tragedy to the world of litterature, cause so much was still to tell about his world. No one will never been able to mix action, sentiments, mystery, history and adventure the way Tolkien did. And never a world will be as attractive as Tolkien's Middle-Earth is. When you finished reading this book, the only negative thing is that you must spend some more money on the other books cause you absolutely want more. Read it, and be part of the religion.
Rating: Summary: Creative classic that has not yet been equalled Review: Most of the comments have said most of what I wish to, but I do have some things left to say. Those who dislike Tolkein's work compare it to that which they find to be superior. Unfortunately, what the few "one stars" prefer is fare more suited to, and often found, in the local supermarket's library section. Tolkein did fantasy best. Although it may appear standard today, that is because it has suppered from numerous rip-offs, like the film "Animal House." It looks like more of the same, but was fresher at the time of first publication. One comment I saw aggrivated me a bit. The writer camplained of severe boredom when reading. He felt that the novel moved too slow. I believe that Tolkien was using a technique known as "description" as he wrote the Ring Trilogy. He was creating atmosphere that draws the reader into the story. Many good writers swear by this. It seems to work (sarcam). Lastly, I would like to ask that those who cannot be bothered to capitalize one, damn word that requires it, or spell anything correctly to please refrain from commenting. you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Go back to your comic books, check-out counter fiction, or just sit in front of that glowing box that, no doubt, rules your life. Leave the reading of true works of art to others. That way, you don't waste a copy that would be better appreciated by someone with taste.

Rating: Summary: PERFECT I LIKED THIS BOOK IT WAS GREAT!500000000 STARS! Review: I really liked this book and to all you people who think this book sucked, you're all stupid jerks! This was a perfect series. I didn't want to read these books because my mom said they were good and I didn't want to reveal she was right, but I got a big shock. I have always been the biggest fan of mythology[dwarves, elves etc,] and then this book blew me away.My favorite people were Gandalf and Aragorn. The detail was written perfectly and I "was actually in the book". The most amazing part was how Gandalf always showed up just in the nick of time. I was amazed at how Frodo and Sam escaped the dangers of their journey-especially Shelob. I had nightmares about her. But I was still amazed at the end when there was a big fight at the Shire. I would be so lucky if I wrote this series because I would be so proud. This was a magical series and it swept me off my feet. I really enjoyed how Legolas and Gimli grew a strong relationship and at the beginning of the end when Aragorn was crowned king.I was astonished at the beauty that Tolkien described of Galadriel. I was enjoyed at the perkiness of Tom Bombadil. AHH! HELP! I'm being attacked by a..... a Gollum? Just kidding. And I cried when Frodo had left with Gandalf and the others and left Sam and Merry and Pippen behind. I know I could use over a ton of thousands of words to describe this series completeltv but yet I couldn't describe it clearly because of its magic and its magical effect it had on me. But I know if you would like to know more about this magical series, you should READ IT FOR YOURSELF! WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE TO LOSE? SEE NOTHING! And what would you get to gain? The knowledge that you have read one of the most ENCHANTING SERIES OF THE WHOLE HISTORY OF THE EARTH! This was a magical series of books and it swept me off into another land. I really do advise you to read this set of enchanting books. You'll enjoy it- I know I did. And it won't be a waste of time. I can assure you you will be satisfied with the mysteries this book holds. I really wish they would never have stopped telling this story.
Rating: Summary: A fantasy epic for people who hate fantasy Review: Ever since I first read these books as a child, they have been my favorites. J.R.R. Tolkien not only tells a completeley engaging story, but in the process creates a world, languages, environment and even succeeds in giving his creation life. This is a fantasy series for everyone. I would especially encourage anyone who hates fantasy books to read these! They're incredible!
Rating: Summary: Greastest story of all-time Review: This is by far the greatest story I have ever read and ever will read. Tolkein is a genius. He sucessfully created a complete, detailed world that was thought out in every aspect. The story keeps your attention from start to finish. I could not put this book down. It sucks you into its world and you feel as if you are there with the characters. I'm only 15 and I'm reading the entire trilogy plus The Hobbit for the 3rd time in the past year! The only thing bad I have to say about this book is that the story ends. You must read these books!
Rating: Summary: A SIX STAR work of Beautifully written fantasy fiction !!! Review: A classic piece of literature from a Professor of English Literature who initially wrote the Hobbit out of love for his family. The Lord of The Ring's Trilogy followed. I read the first hundred reviews out of curiosity and chuckled at the illiterate Bubbas and Geeks who were weaned on comic books and TV who could not understand what all the fuss was about. But then again, a person with a sixth grade reading level shouldn't read literature. It will undoubtedly make their small brains hurt. The Hobbits are a reflection of folklore and mythology as presented by Tolkin. The Ring symbolizes a quest of good over evil and the Frodo symbolizes the common man's struggle with good and evil. I started reading the Hobbit to my oldest daughter when she was only 12 and then to my other children. We delighted together each night in the story as it is beautifully told and woven with golden threads of magical writings by the greatest fantasy writer that has ever existed! Buy this book for a loved one and read it to your children. THEY WILL NEVER FORGET the sharing that comes from this. I am a writer with my first book just out, Alien Rapture with Brad Steiger. Tolkin inspired me to write and to examine existing mythology and tradition. I recommend this work over any and all amazon.com fiction or fantasy works.
