Rating: Summary: The best readable story of all time. Review: How many times have I read this story? I don't know, but I do know that it was the first book that I read every January for 20 years. I have read it to my children, I have worn out 3 paper back sets and 1 collector's edition and passed the last set to friends. I have even spent 1 year reading it in Japanese! The values and challenges presented speak to the need in my soul for a way to face the problems of my own time. That an average "man" (hobbit) can rise, if must be, to do what must be done; to work through the concept of discoordinated teamwork; and even a little hero worship has been a sincere blessing to me over these 40 years. I just wish that (1), every person on earth could be expose to these ideas - other so-called great writers have done no better Tokien, and many worse, and (2), I truely regret that I never got to shake the author's hand and tell him "thank you".
Rating: Summary: The finest work of fantasy that I have read. Review: I have been reading fantasy for thirty years. I have read this series over twenty times and although I love Jordan, Goodkind,Kurtz, Feist, Kay, Wurts, Jones and Donaldson ,none can approach the master. Of particular note were the madness of Boromir, the journey of Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn throgh the forest of the Ents and the journey of Frodo and Sam to Mordor. Read these books!
Rating: Summary: Why do they only give us five starts.... Review: That simply isn't enough to describe how great this trillogy is! Although I have not finished the whole series, what I have read so far has been simply marvolous (don't know how to spell the word). I have tried to encourage many of my friends and family to read the books, but most of them refuse (most of them don't like to read). Many of the names in this book, but mainly gandalf, are names that I use for RPG's. This book is one that if you haven't already read, YOU SHOULD READ RIGHT NOW!!! So I give this book my own rating. 2000 stars.
Rating: Summary: One of the most well-written books of all time. Review: This book brought me out of the real world, and into a wonderful fantasy world with a medieval setting. It was one of the most well-written books of all time, and is definitely always going to be a classic.
Rating: Summary: Great Start Review: It's Tolkien. The man started the fantasy genre. The world he created is massive and detailed. But he isn't the best. I prefer Jordan and Martin. Their stories are more enjoyable. Their characters more complex. Bilbo is pale in comparison. Some say the others copied Tolkien. But Edison didn't invent the first light bulb either, he just made the best one. Tolkien wrote the first, others have followed up with better.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book i have every read! Review: If any of you are looking for a great book that will enwrap you with its tale, it is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I just recently finished it, and have been depressed every since I read the last word. If you are looking for something great, read the lord of the rings.
Rating: Summary: The greatest story ever told Review: This is the greatest story ever told, and the purest form of the old "Good vs. Evil" story in literary history. I have read the "Hobbit" & "Lord of the rings" 9 times, each time in a different version, and loved them all.
Rating: Summary: "This is truly a masterpiece that will outlast our time!" Review: These are flat out the best books I have ever read. I loved them and I'm only 14. When I asked my English teacher for a recommendation on what type of book I should read, he totally suggested these. I used to love to read the dramatic genre, but I have changed my a opinion and now all I can read is fantasy. Mr. Tolkien is such a fantastic writer it is very unfortunate that he did not write more than he did in his time.
Rating: Summary: Terrific Review: Characters and places keep you immersed. The adventures of the Hobbits will place your immagination at new heights. Throughly enjoyable from the first to the fifth book.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST FANTASY SERES EVER!!!! Review: This the best series of books I have ever read. I first read THE HOBBIT IN 1976, and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy soon after. I have read these books at least 30 times since and a still captivated. If I were stranded on a desert island this series would be the one i would want. the 1000 words we are given could never adequately describe the joy j.r.r. Tolkien has given me. buy this book, you will not be sorry.
