Summary: Fantastic book...but racist?
Review: I can't believe that some people are saying this book is racist. Thankfully, these people are very few. Of course, Tolkien used white to represent goodness and black to represent evil but do you (especially Big Daddy T) honestly believe that he was implying that black people were evil just because they're black? If you read the book a little more carefully instead of casting aspersions on it, you'd notice that some of the dark-skinned villains like the Haradrim live in Harad, South of Middle-Earth.The South of M-E is where Sauron lives. What I'm trying to say is, the Haradrim were influenced by Sauron (he's just next door). Why are they dark-skinned? Read the book, it mentions the intensity of sunshine in Harad. Aren't white people corrupted as well? They are.

Sauron's top lieutenant, the Mouth of Sauron is white. The hill men who fought with the armies of Rohan are white. Its not a matter of black being evil here, its about how humans, of any colour can be influenced by false promises and threats. Don't believe me? I'll quote Sam Gamgee here, who saw one of the Haradrim fall:

It was Sam's first view of a battle of Men against Men and he did not like it much. He was glad that he could not see the dead face. He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather stay there in peace -

The Haradrim are proud and brave warriors and there are many descriptions in the book that prove that fact. The only difference between them and the good guys are that they're fighting on the wrong side of the fence.

Saruman the White is evil, his servant Grima Wormtongue is evil. Both of them are white. Yet, they, being traitors did some of the greatest damage to the good guys.

The lord of the Nazgul is white, remember the line: 'the pale king' of the Nazgul?

How about black orcs? There are orcs with scaly green skin too....orcs aren't human! The most evil of them all, Sauron is not swarthy either, he's just charred-black (read the Silmarillion, he was at ground zero when the island of Numenor sank. Sauron was formerly in the form of a white man)

There are many other examples and you don't even have to look hard for it. This book is about, among others, how even good people, no matter what colour, can be corrupted by power. Those who call this book racist have clearly missed the point.

Summary: Don't make me march!
Review: If you read Tolkien and enjoy it, then you are blind to racism. I'm not going to sit back some lazy saturday morning Clark and enjoy a story I live everyday! Wake up people! Drive outside the suburbs you live in and open those eyes. Big Daddy T---See you in the hood. Clark---No justice no peace.

Summary: This is the real World!
Review: Clarke S. wake up! This is the real world. Do you really believe that it just so happens that black represents evil and white represents good and pureness? This book stinks of racism like your favorite safe haven after 10 out-of-the-closet poopers have struck. Tolkien is a christian intolerant racist. He and C.S. Lewis have devised these books to oppress us. It's easy for you to "get lost" in these books because you are probably a white dude, who wears glasses, has an easy office job, and drives a red sports car. For the rest of us who have to face the real world on a daily basis, it's not so easy to forget the very real evils of this world.

Summary: Transcending mediums
Review: The Lord of The Rings is a story which has transcended through out our culture. It is revealed in music by Led Zeppelin, it is re-written in other epic tales of adventure and wizadry like Star Wars.

This book will be enjoyed by avid readers of every age. Once you pick up the first book about Bilbo Hobbit, you will not set it down until you know the outcome of Frodo's quest to destroy the Ring of Power in the final book.

The characters will entice you to know more about them at every turn. Your vision of the world created by JRR Tolkien will live within you forever. When you take up with the adventures of the Hobbits, you yourself are one with them. They and their quest will become a part of yourself.

Enjoy this book... and look for references in every aspect of our culture. Good reading to you.

Summary: The Racism Slant Astounds Me
Review: Why does racism have to appear in every aspect of our lives, especially in discussions about this magnificent story? Please, readers, just focus on the simple, straightforward theme of good vs. evil, not lily white vs. evil black. Tolkien would be astonished.

Open these books up one dreary Saturday morning and lose yourself in Tolkien's character development, his astounding attention to detail, and flawless story structure. The breaking of the fellowship and following their adventures in two different parts in The Two Towers and The Return of the King was magnificent.

Just enjoy the story, and DON'T try to apply its themes to our ridiculous times we live in. Use these books to escape from it.

Summary: what can i say?
Review: ok, if you haven't heard of these great/amazing books, let me give you a little advice.... READ THEM! Just from reading the whole series this year has had a huge impact on my life. Beyond that there aren't many other things to say! So if you're the type of person who appreciates good fantasy & all around great literature, (not to mention a little spirituality!) read LOTR, cuz you won't regret it!

Summary: Still the best after 7, no 8 readings!
Review: I first read The Hobbit when I was 11, and I've been reading it and the other books in the set off and on ever since. It is definitely a book set I would recommend, if not for the definitive writing style of Tolkien, then for the sheer joy of reading it. I figure that if this book can get some of my friends to read who haven't picked up a book seriously without a homework assignment, then it must be an excellent story.

Summary: A burst of pure creativity and imagination.
Review: A burst of pure creativity and imagination. Everything a book should be and possibly can be. Tolkien is the Homer of the 20th century, and his Hobbit and Lord of the Rings is the Oddessy and Illiad of the 20th century. These books are a giant leap forward for the literary world. I will be truly surprized if any other book surpases this one in the 21st century, this book marks the zenith of literature, and all other Fantasy or Fiction past-Tolkien is just commentry and interpretation to his work. This is the canon of Fantasy. The Lord of the Rings will Expand your consciousness to new horizons, it will lift your spirit to such hights you didnt even know were possible. This book refines your Intellect, your emotions and your spirit, I know of no other book which brings such a strong and blessed effect to all these 3 at the same time. I am not kidding, if you havnt read this book you do not know to what hight literature can lift you.
