Rating: Summary: Timeless Review: This book goes beyond praise. To say that it is the greatest book ever written does not do it justice. It is, in my opinion, the most perfect thing man has ever created.
Rating: Summary: Lord of the Rings Review: I first read the trilogy when I was in high school. It is an excellent storyline, with characters that you immediately fall in love with. If you love fantasy, dragons, sword fights and heroes, look no further. If you are buying a set, I recommend hard backs, since they will last longer. You will find yourself re-reading them again and again.
Rating: Summary: I just don't get it. Review: I read the hobbit when younger and thought it was ok (I have since attempted to re-read it and couldn't through it). I tried to read the Lord of the Rings and was bored stiff. I have since tried to read them, at least 5 times, because so many people find them great. I do not get why. I find them dull, dry, and rather cartoonish. I know there are probably going to be a lot of people offended by this review but that is perfectly alright by me....not everyone thinks Tolkein is the 'genius' of the fantasy genre.
Rating: Summary: Best books of the Century! Review: I am re-reading these books for the first time in 20 years and have determined that they really are the best works of fiction in the 20th century! They are the precursors to all modern fantasy and have everything in them: ancient mythology, early Christian symbolism, magic, good vs. evil, parallels to 20th century history, heroism, humor, madness and even a little romance! I'm stunned by those little minds who think that Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were racist. Give me a break and wake up! Better yet...go back to school. Your ignorance is truly appalling.
Rating: Summary: the best book ever: Lord of the rings Review: I started reading this outstanding book about 5 years ago and now I am reading it 11th time... I wish John Ronald would live.. I have so many questions and having answers now is impossible because the worlds greatest writer is dead. In memoriam John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (Beren) 1882-1973 Elen sila lumenn omintielvo!
Rating: Summary: "The Lord of the Rings" is a Masterpiece Review: A more beautiful vision has rarely been attained by an author. Tolkien's work puts virtually all other modern pieces to shame, and should certainly be regarded as one of the greatest and most profound works of art to be produced in the twentieth century. It is pleasing to me that a scholar such as Tolkien participated in creating timeless literature and not simply studying it. This book was so wonderful and so absorbing that, the first time I read it, I actually cried when it ended, so upset was I that it was over. Don't let fear of its length prevent you from reading this amazing tale. Put aside the lesser books for a month and let TLOTR enchant you as it has so many others.
Rating: Summary: The Lord of the Rings is a Masterpiece Review: J.R.R Tolkien has created a world in the Lord of the Rings so intense, so particular, so spectacular, that I cannot recommend any other series for any one to read, whether they are beginners or veterans to the field of fantasy. Tolkien has created what could well be the ideal fantasy epic. Only a handful of writers have been able to duplicate Tolkiens expertese in writing (such as Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, or David Eddings). A book such as this one does not come along often. The Hobbit (the prequel to the Lord of the Rings) was my very first fantasy title, and is equally good in story, even if it was directed for a younger audience. Believe me when I say that this book is a masterpiece. Not many books will be able to stir your emotions inside of you like this one. You wont be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: One Book to Rule Them All Review: Some may say that Tolkien outdid himself this time, but every book of his I've read is truly a work of art. I recommend this novel to fans of fantasy novels. This is a true fantasy classic that will not entice the reader if he or she is not a fantasy reader. This tale starts off in the prequal, The Hobbit, at the house of an unlikely hero, Bilbo Baggins. Galdalf the Grey, a wizard known for spectacular fireworks, greets Bilbo and tells him of an opportunity for gold and adventure. Being a Hobbit, Bilbo quickly refuses and doesn't think anymore about it until Dwarves start to arrive at his house. The Dwarves tell Bilbo of a dragon named Smaug in the far away Lonely Mountain. Bilbo is eventually wisked away on a seemingly not so adventurous adventure, but he quickly discovers his worth to the party of Dwarves and even saves their necks a few times. During the course of the journey, Bilbo is trapped in the Misty Mountains by himself. While crawling in the dark, he finds a ring and thinks nothing of it. Soon, he is found by a strange character named Gollum who tricks Bilbo into playing a riddle game. After winning the game by luck rather than skill, our hero must escape Gollum. Although Gollum has plenty of food, he would rather eat the juicy meat of a young Hobbit. Bilbo escapes only to find that his ring is a magic ring and hides it from the Dwarves. The rest of the adventure focuses on getting back the Dwarves' treasure and fighting a War of Five armies against the enraged Goblins. The Lord of the Rings, however, focuses on the journey of Bilbo's nephew, Frodo Baggins. Gandalf finds out that Bilbo's ring is a ring of power that belongs to the most evil creature in the land, Sauron. Sauron's power is quickly growing, so Gandalf sends Frodo and some companions on a journey to the Elven city of Rivendell to find out what to do with the ring. At the coucil, the ring is ordered destroyed by casting it into a volcano known as the cracks of doom. This will lead our new hero, Frodo, into many perils and exciting adventures. The ending is very compelling and leaves you with a hunger for more Tolkien. Again, this book is for fantasy lovers only! Be warned, you will have trouble putting this one down!
Rating: Summary: One of the best books ever written... Review: This book will keep you up at night! Not in fear, but because you can't put it down. I have missed more hours of sleep to the Lord of the Rings than I care to remember. The Hobbit is a great book, the Lord of the Rings are better. Filled with rich descriptions and powerful messages these books should be required reading in all High Schools!
Rating: Summary: Don't READ too much into it! Review: JRR Tolkien has created wonderful fictional characters who have the ability to transport us to another world through our own imagination as we read. Believe me he is not making a racist statement, nor does CS Lewis in his books. For those of you who are so embittered by the racism you either experience or imagine in the world, try to keep in mind that these books contain a message of hope that truth, honesty, and courage will perservere in spite of the evils around us. And I might remind the two of you who complain about evil always being portrayed by the color black...the witch who was so evil and wanted to destroy Narnia in the chronicles by CS Lewis...she was the White Witch. I'd say that defuncts your arguments. Perhaps you should stop feeling angry and sorry for yourself?
