Rating: Summary: For fantasy, this is it! Review: I first read the Lord of the Rings when I was a child. I've been hooked on fantasy ever since. I've re-read this series so many times... maybe 15 times? I've lost count. I find new things each time I re-read it. The descriptions are very long and can be tedious, especially if you don't know the story well enough to know what happens next. Each time I read it, I go slower and get more of a picture of the world.I still have the same paperback books from the 70s. Now that they've fallen apart, I have to buy new ones! :-)
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Masterpiece Review: I first read The Lord of the Rings way back when it was first released. The Hobbit was originaly written for his then very young son Christopher, and the tale grew from that simple story. You will never forget the charcters once you meet them. Characters like little Samwise (a Hobbit), a lover of gardens to the many lords and ladies. It is a classic tale "Good vs Evil". The original set I had fell apart from reading and rereading, till I had to buy another set. If this is your first time I do suggest you start with the Hobbit and then work your way through LOTR. Tolkein himself I feel to be a real genius, his writting is brilliant. Unfortunatly for us he died before finishing what he felt to be his most important work and that book was completed by his son. I miss him sorely, but his memory lives on in his works.
Rating: Summary: The Lord of the Rings Review: LOTR will not enjoyed by everyone; some find it silly, pointless, and boring. My advise is to read at least 100 pages of 'The Fellowship of the Ring'; if you are not engaged at that point, put it down and forget about it. The three volumes of LOTR are merely the culmination of the story of 'Arda', the world of Tolkien's imagination and his lifetime's work. The whole story is very briefly summarized in his other work, 'The Silmarillion'. Imagine if you will a world history that harmoniously combines Christian and pagan European ethos in a 10,000 year span full of heroic good and evil, courage, beauty, sorrow and hope. It is trancendantly magnificant to those whose imaginations allows them to appreciate it.
Rating: Summary: There is not one bad thing you can say about this book! Review: "Lord of the Rings" is not just the foremost novel (or, rather, series of novels) in the sci-fi/fantasy genre but it also the forerunner in literature in general. Tolkien was an AMAZING author who knew great deals about character study and plot development. All of the characters he created are completely different and unique (to keep them clear in your mind), and the setting that he invented seems to actually be more detailed and understood than our own universe. Even if you are not a big fan of fantasy, this is one thing that you HAVE TO READ! It is amazing!
Rating: Summary: The two greatest stories ever told.. Review: This new box set by Houghton Mifflin is a beautiful addition to any Tolkien lovers bookshelf. The illustrations on the box and on the book covers themselves, are done by Alan Lee. One of the best Middle-earth artists, renown for his work on the hardcover editions of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit". In the box you get the cornerstones of Middle-earth, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". In "The Hobbit" you'll go along with Bilbo Baggins, twelve dwarves, and Gandalf the wizard on their quest to recover the dwarves gold and home from the dragon Smaug. A lighthearted and fun journey that sets the stage for what is to come.... Which leads us to "The Lord of the Rings", the greatest fantasy epic of all time. Taking place years later than "The Hobbit", this is the story of Frodo Baggins, Samwise, Merry and Pippin and their quest to save Middle-earth from the evil Sauron by destroying the One Ring. Bilbo is seen again and Gandalf is back too, helping the hobbits on their journey. You'll meet a memorable group of characters, who come to life, with the touch of Tolkien. In both books you'll get maps to help you on your way, and in "The Lord of the Rings" there are extensive appendixes with a tale of years, calendars, family trees, notes about language and other good stuff. Overall this one set of books you'll probably end up replacing over the years as you wear them out from reading. You'll smile everytime you open the covers, delving back into Middle-earth, to see old friends and make new ones, in the greatest stories ever told....
Rating: Summary: Thumbs Up! Review: I found THE HOBBIT to be a delightful page-turner. I found the LORD OF THE RINGS to be a bit of a grind in spots, but rich over all, and was glad I made the journey when done. This is obviously an enduring work. The Beatles were going to star in a movie version of THE LORD OF THE RINGS (Ringo was going to play Sam, which shows his place in the Beatles pecking order!). I don't even like fantasy, but I liked these books.
Rating: Summary: Every other year..... Review: ...I read the trilogy again. Others like this that I've read don't even come close to the depth and breadth Tolkien has. My only complaint is that sometimes it seems like somebody else wrote parts of it--the style is a tad inconsistent but the quality is there. Hopefully, the movie they are working on now will be faithful to the books. The computer-generated images should be very accurate. This trilogy should be required reading for every high school student. There is no profanity, no sex, the violence is justified and the good guys eventually do win but at a painful cost.
Rating: Summary: A requisite of any library Review: I am one of the fortunate ones who grew up with Tolkien along with my mother's milk, and it has never lost its lustre with me. Some people fault LOTR for its length (Tolkien himself thought it wasn't long enough), but one must be willing to invest the time for a work of such depth and profundity. It is a work that yields new insights every time one rereads it. Only CS Lewis' Space Trilogy, Herbert's Dune, and Miyazaki's Nausicaa manga can hold a candle to Tolkien's magnificent achievement. The world is forever indebted to JRR.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: A must-read even if you are not interested in fantasy litterature. Hundreds of characters come alive in this beautiful saga in a world so real that it is difficult to abbandon it when you have finished reading (this is the reason why I read it 6 times). I believe it is the perfect gift for any type of reader!
