Rating: Summary: The bestest set of books in creation! Review: Black Riders...Orcs...Hobbits...Dragons...Elves... Wizards...Battles...Magic(not occult stuff)... Everything a reader could whant is in these books, from the prelude of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings itself! And with the New Lord of the Rings Films hitting our screens next year, we are in for a real big treat!
Rating: Summary: Still great after all these years Review: I hadn't read the whole series since I was in 8th grade, but just this past summer I started with the Hobbit and read the Lord of the Rings and then the Simillarion -- what a story! I literarlly could not put the books down and gave up the better part of 3-4 days reading, totally immersed in the forests and land of Frodo, Gollum, Bilbo, etc.... Tolkien's genius is that he really created a whole world complete with languages, customs, social divisions, along with memorable characters -- heck, even Led Zepplin sings of "Golum and the evil one." Anyone who loves these books should also check out another fantasy type writer, Jonathan Carroll. Lest anyone not be impressed by what Tolkein did in these books, his linguistic studies and achievements are even more noteworthy. These books are great to read aloud to your kids and get them hooked on reading. Long live Gandolf!
Rating: Summary: Everyone should read Tolkien! Review: It all starts here. . . Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" are classics in the fantasy genre. Enter the world of Middle-Earth and meet those unforgettable characters that are legends in our own world as well as theirs, to anyone who loves visiting other worlds. In these books you'll meet hobbits, small and sensible cave-dwelling creatures who generally disapprove of adventures. . . or anything else that might make them late for dinner. However, despite their own sensible inclinations, a few of them do manage to get involved in the most interesting adventures -- and so will you, once you open one of these books. Prepare for the journey of your life, as you meet Bilbo, Frodo, Samwise, Gandalf, Gollum, and others. The boxed set is well worth buying, because once you read one of these books, you'll want the others on hand!
Rating: Summary: Great Fantasy Tale, and its best Edition for Cash Value! Review: These Paperbacks are just that, but market size, with larger print. They are fairly durrable, and readable many times over. The Lord of the rings is simply the greatest fantasy tale ever told in my eyes. Start with the Hobbit though, so you can become familiar with the rich character background of middle earth. Lord of the Rings will leave a lasting imprestion on any Sci Fi, Fantasy reader. If you like books by CS Lewis for example, be sure to check these fabulous books out!
Rating: Summary: Unquestionably fun Review: The boxed set is a wonderful way to pass on the fun to the next generation of readers. I recently bought the set for two nephews and a niece, and they all enjoy having a set of books that look "professional." I don't really need to comment on the story, because many others have already done so. It goes without saying that these books are top of the line novels that will provide days of reading pleasure for the young and old (that's me) alike.
Rating: Summary: Amazing and Deep Review: This is an excellent trilogy. The subtle conflicts, growingrelationships, and character development is outstanding. If you likeStar Wars, you'll love this book. If you don't like Star Wars, you'lllove this book.
Rating: Summary: This began my love affair with literature. Review: This epic story, spread over four books, was what planted the seed of reading in my adolescent mind over 20 years ago. I have read the trilogy several times and enjoyed it more each time. I recommend these books for anyone who is interested in fantasy literature and even for those who are not. This work would also be an excellent gift for a young person. You could start them off on a lifetime of reading pleasure and stimulate their imagination through literature in these days of video mind melt.
Rating: Summary: A family read Review: As others have said before me, this is a truly inspired work. Rather than reiterate the 400 previous posts, I'll just say this is a book the will create a thirst for reading in a child. I would strongly suggest reading the Hobbit to your young ones, and then letting them read the rest of the series on their own. These are the only books I have read more than twice and it certainly got me away from just reading comic books. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: One of the Great Works of Fiction Review: Tolkien obviously had different intentions when he sat down to write "The Hobbit" than when he began his opus, "The Lord of the Rings" (LOTR). The Hobbit is a fanciful fantasy that reads like an excellent children's story (for older kids to be sure). "The Hobbit," however, does set the table for the engrossing and amazingly influential LOTR. I strongly recommend LOTR for older, first time readers. Tolkien's prose is striking and wonderfully descriptive (without being too wordy - at least through "The Fellowship of the Ring" and the "Two Towers"). The key to the success of this series, however, lies in the development of the main characters. Set in the context of a fantastic and dangerous mission, in an incredibly intricate alternate reality, the story is almost impossible to put down because you care about what happens next to Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and the like. Ultimately, it is a story of honor, sacrifice, and love. A true modern classic.
Rating: Summary: Forget STAR WARS! This IS the greatest epic ever written! Review: J.R.R. Tolkien has created a work that absolutely no other author has ever come close to making! This is fantasy at its best. If your idea of fantasy novels is half-naked men and women riding dragons and wizards looking into crystal balls then look elsewhere! The Lord of the Rings is the only fantasy that actually makes you want to be the characters. While many people find the plots confusing, (notice I said "plots" as in the plural!), to the intelligent reader who finds entertaining reading in classics and not in mindless publications, this is a must buy! P.S. Don't forget to check out the animated movie of The Hobbit. Although it leaves out a lot of scenes in the book, it is a great introduction to the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie, due to be released in December of 2001!
