Rating: Summary: Commentary on this Edition Review: I am not qualified to rate the Lord of the Rings on its literary content and I wouldn't listen to anyone who had anything to say about the story iteself. As for this edition, I was somewhat displeased. While the cover and box set slip cover were nice, the paper quality is not too good. I was hoping that the paper would be the good quality acid free paper this is used in many higher quality paperbacks these days. Instead, the paper is the cheap, rough paper that you find in chunky oldpaperbacks. If you care about things like this, hold out for a pricier, better quality edition.
Rating: Summary: One of the Greatest Works of All Time Review: What can I say that hasn't already been said about LOTR? It is one of the greatest works of all time. I recently re-read the entire set from The Hobbit to The Return of the King. The world that Tolkien creates is so real that even when you're done reading the hundreds of pages you still don't want to leave. I found myself sucked into Middle-Earth. I wanted to know everything about it. But then I realized it's just a fantasy world. There are a lot of things I still don't know about the real world, so I pulled myself out of it. That should give you an idea of how powerful these books are. I have tried create fantasy worlds myself and it is no easy task. I can't even get close to the complexity of Tolkien's world. He must have been one eccentric guy to spend so much time developing this world, with its own languages and all.
Rating: Summary: A great Book Review: I reccomend this book to just about anyone. It's a bit lengthy but still a geat fantasy story that everyone should read.
Rating: Summary: Mind blowing 'n totally Unforgettable Review: I first read the Hobbit a couple of yrs ago and I thought it fascinating albeit a bit to the "childish side". But interesting all the same. When I got to know that the book was the first of a series, I literally went hysterical. As soon as I read the first page of the 2nd of the series, I knew that I would not be able to rest, sleep or even breathe in peace till I was done reading the book. It was absolutely unputdownable!! After that, I must've read the dook at least 3-4 times. And, for the life of me, I simply cannot stop raving about it. If you truly enjoy reading and letting your imagination run wild and free, THIS is most DEFINITELY, THE book to read.
Rating: Summary: Slow at first....Than it picks up speed! Review: I just want to say that this is the best series I have ever read...This series is for all ages. It is slow at first, but if you stay with it, it will get exciting very quickly. I have always said "J.R.R Tolkien did'nt create a setting, he created an entire universe! And this is not for just fantasy "buffs", it's for everyone. J.R.R Tolkien was a master at what he did, and he will remain so forever. The only problem with this series is the language is a bit hard to understand. For example, it took me till the end of the third book to realize that "ere" means before. A tip to the people who read this, do not skip the songs and poems. Some of them are nonsense, but some actually have importance. This is the best series I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books series of all time Review: Hey HP fans, while waiting for book 5, as a wise reviwer said here, you should read "Lord of the Rings", 1,2, and 3, they are really very good written, great characters, great story, and they are wonderfully written, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are both grrrrrrreaaaaat, but you can skip "The Hobbit" it's bad, but the other books are great.
Rating: Summary: Best Ever Review: I won't say a lot. I believe the other 508 reviews say all of what I have to say anyway. I only wanted to reply to a review by a man called S. Swaminathan. Mr. Swaminathan - You are obviously not an educated reader, and probably not an educated person at all. A person that writes such words on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit is surely an ignorant. You chose smartly to not publish your e-mail on this site, for if you would, you would surely have recieved many furious e-mails about this review. And, concerning your reference to Harry Potter - I read all of the Harry Potter books, and though I enjoyed reading them, I won't ever read them again. You see, I define a good book as a book that every time i'll read again, I'll find out new things that I didn't notice before. And Harry Potter is quite not like that. And the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings quite are. That is why i find your saying that Harry Potter is better proposterous. This book is a wonderful book. Much of the hope I have in my life is because of this book, and also much of my fear. This book shows yuo quite clearly the two extents that humans can reach. On one side there are the Nazgul - creatures of pure evil, and on the other there is the Strider (Aragorn) and also the Hobbits. I would recommend this book to anyone. Ignorant or not. I would be very glad if this book was a part of the mandatory literature syllabus here in Israel. I have nothing more to say, for more info, read the other positive reviews. The negative reviews aren't worth attention. They probably came from people like Mr. Swaminathan.
Rating: Summary: Hey all Harry Potter fans! Review: While waiting for book five, you should read this very good books, about magic, and fantasy, they are very very good, you should really read them, both Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings are great series are wonderfully and imaginatively written
Rating: Summary: Tolkien is the Master Review: Is there any question as to what the greatest fantasy work ever written is? NO--it is clear that Tolkien's construction of a vast universe of history, language, and intrigue are far beyond that of any other writer to date. Tolkien has created a masterful work with strong characters, a powerful plotline, and a veiled examination of the innate good or evil nature of every human being, and how that nature can become corrupted by evil or salvaged through redemtion. There is nothing that can compare. Harry Potter who?
Rating: Summary: The Premier Fantasy Work Review: Tolkien's master craftsmenship is evident in this series and LOTR is the greatest fantasy work written to date. The history, languages, subtle symbolism and themes are powerful and moving, and though it is a work of fantasy Tolkien makes it seem more like living through history! If your in the mood for griping adventure, stiring characters, and an examination into the innate goodness and evilness of mankind then this work is at the top of the charts. Tolkien simply cannot be topped. -----Harry Who?-----
