Rating: Summary: Most amazing books ever written Review: The world that Tolkien created stands on its own merit, its own reality, and its own power. There's really nothing more to say. If you plan on seeing the movies coming out soon, YOU MUST read the books first!!!!!!! I can confidently say that the movies, while creating a wonderful rendition of the story (perhaps), will not do justice to the awesome power of the books themselves.I would also suggest an older version.
Rating: Summary: These books are my bible Review: These books have to be the greatest- no, they ARE the greatest fantasy novels ever written. How good are they? I'm 13 (and a girl), and when I was only halfway through The Fellowship of the Ring, I was totally obsessed. Need I say more?
Rating: Summary: I LOVE HOBBITS ! Review: I'm sorry if I use wrong English in this writing! (Because I have just started studing it.) But I want to let you know that The Lord Of Lings are also read by a lot of Japanese. When I was a high shcool student, we(the books and I) met together in a library near my house. Although it was witten with Japanese, I really excited! What's a lovely animal (?) hobbit is! What's a wonderful wizard Gandaluf is! (Sorry, I don't know the spelling of his name..) The story made me so happy! I also love the story of Narnia written by C.S.Lewis. Last year, I decided to study English. Because I want to read J.R.R.tolkien's and C.S.Lewis's warks in thier own language. I go to university for this reason, now. I really grad to meet them on my life!! Thank you for reading here!(It must be poor sentences! I'll keep studing up!)
Rating: Summary: Lord of the rings Review: The single greatest novel of the 20th Century and probably ever, including the heroic works of Homer, Shakespeare and Dante. Having read other so called greats of literature, not just those noted above, I can safely say that the Lord of the Rings is far superior to Macbeth, War and Peace, Wuthering Heights, Dante's Infernoe, the Illiad or any of the other greats. I have read it over a dozen times and each time it awakens a new joy so multifaceted is its glory. Enjoy it as an excellent adventure story, delight in it as an epic legend, appreciate it for great poetry and beauty, it is the one that has oft been imitated and never surpassed despite the plethora of fantasy novels since. Indeed, were it not for Tolkien, the modern field of fantasy would be sorely weakened. Be warned though, once you fall for this epic novel, you will be dawn into the incredible world of JRR Tolkien. As many have noted, though it be over a 1000 pages long, it is far too short. It is one to keep, to cherish and reread as often as one can.
Rating: Summary: YEEEHAAAA Review: i love bunkbeds more than anything in the world!!.....mmmm cookies are good too......yummy
Rating: Summary: The Greatest Fantasy Adventure Ever Review: Nobody does fantasy better than J.R.R. Tolkien. This set is without a doubt four of the greatest books ever written. I discovered Tolkien in 1967. I read the trilogy every year or two. Everytime I read it I find something new. I read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings to my son starting when he was about four years old. Like his father he has read and loved everything Tolkien has written. Simply said "its the best".
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Fantasy Review: The Hobbit is a wonderful book. I am so glad Tolkien decided to continue the story with The Lord of The Rings. When you start reading sit in a comfortable chair. Why? You will not want to leave your seat once you start reading this wonderful set of books. Tolkien does a great job at slowly feeding you information about how events will turn out. It's amazing how he focuses on small details that make a great difference in understanding the book. At end of each book you start to think that Hobbits, Elves and Dwarfs really exist. Your boss looks more like Gollum than ever before. You also wonder where did I bury that gold I took from those trolls. You think your grandfater is now Gandalf and strangely enough you enjoy wearing your wedding ring because no one can see you when you were it. Okay, read the book now...enjoy!
Rating: Summary: The Lord of the Rings Review: This series of books continues to be one of the best, if not the best written in the fantasy genre. J.R.R Tolkien has a sense of style and and detail that is unmatched by anything I've ever read. One of my favorite parts of this series is The Hobbit, in particular Smaug the Dragon. Everything, from the way the dragon lives to the way he talks is carefully thought out to make him a convincing character. I would consider this a must-read for anyone who enjoys reading fantasy books. It is truely a classic set, and if you haven't read these books, go out and buy them.
Rating: Summary: 5 stars for the books...1 star for this edition Review: I first read these books over thirty years ago. I have been rereading them yearly (at least once a year) ever since. This series of books is known as the foundation on which all modern fantasy is built . It is a well deserved reputation. Tolkien is the master to whom all others owe homage. I have shared these books with my children and friends whenever they expressed an interest in reading a "good book". None of them has ever expressed other than sincere admiration for the writings and profound thanks for my leading them to the novels. I am sure that I can add little in way of praise that has not already been said in the many reviews listed. I am also sure that I do not want to give away any of the plot. The main reason I am writing this review is to admonish sevral reviewers who had the unmitigated gall to even begin to compare works such as the Harry Potter line, or the current works of Mr. Martin to The Lord of The Rings. Preposterous I say!! All of todays fantasy, including those mentioned above, whether well written or not, whether well thought of or not could not have been written and accepted if Mr. Tolkien had not broken the trail. There can never be a comparison to an original as original as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. There have been a number of reviews that had the temerity to suggest that some of these works might actually be better than the original. BALDERDASH!! The original stands alone not only because it was the original, but also because of the depth and breadth of the story. The writing, while some language may be outdated to the thinking of some, is superlative. I read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi. While I have other favorites in sci-fi nothing and no one tops Tolkien and his work in fantasy- not Martin, not Jordan, not Brooks, not Eddings, not Goodkind, NOT ANYONE!! All that said I will go on to remarks about this edition....yuck! Find an older copy PLEASE!! My earliest are hardbound editions that came from a school library. Seems that thirty years ago or so, I forgot to return them..... They are cherished treasures in my library. I have several well worn paperback editions and most of the corresponding works and ancillaries. Please, if you intend to reads the books, find an older copy. The current edition is filled with typos and the maps are very poor. Please, if you intend to see the films (beginning Christmas time this year with another edition Christmas 2002 and the final edition Christmas 2003) do yourself a favor and READ THE BOOKS FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: The Hobbit Review: The Hobbit is a great novel. It brought me to places one can only dream of. Bilbo Baggins, the main character, is a polite hobbit who just wants to be left alone. He lives a simple, quiet life until a wizard named Gandalf shows up at Bilbo's house with a group of homless dwarves. Bilbo soon becomes entangled in their quest and has to face many of his worst fears. The reader becomes so wrapped up in the plot that it's nearly impossible to set this novel down. Although I do admit that the begining of this tale and other parts of the novel maybe confusing and somewhat slow, it is easy to understand the names once you have names and characters straight. In no time at all you will see why this book has so many readers wanting to read this novel. All in all, I enjoyed the book's many twists and turns and of its unpredictable ending.
