Summary: One of my all time favorites
Review: My parents first bought this set for me back in 1975 and I have read it many times since then. I fell in love with it the first time and the feeling just continues to grow. As a child my imagination built all these worlds in my head and I must say that the just released movies fit my imagination quite well. That said, I pull these books out about once a year and read them again. Constantly learning something I did not see before.
Definately a great read, and good for kids...teaches that no matter how hopeless it appears good is always better then evil and will triumph in the end.

Summary: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings
Review: Well if you're anything like me and have kids then you have heard of these books and if your kids are like mind then you have been to the movies and watch some of the shows. At first you think they are nothing more than kid shows until you get hooked like me and start reading the books and find out you're hooked right along with your kids. You pick up the books and can't stop reading. Great books for your kids and even better for you. They are must read books-Larry Hobson-Author "The Day Of The Rose"

Summary: One of the greatest fantasy series.... ever
Review: I've read through all of the series with this package. I don't know if it's just me, but having four books seemed unnecessary. You could get the three book series compiled into one book, and then pick up The Hobbit if you wanted to read it (which you should get).

These books are definately worth the buy, and they do live up to the hype. The only problem with them is which edition to choose from =\. I'd get the single book if I were you.

Summary: WOW
Review: These must be the best books I have ever read. They get better every time I reread them, and I reread them as often as I can! I am amazed at the scope of the world Tolkien has created, and the friendships. The time it takes to read these books is well spent.

Summary: Magic
Review: I can't imagine how anyone could start on the first page and do anything else until they finished reading the last word.

When I finished I only had one criticism--it was too short!

Summary: Boring Boring
Review: People seem to like this book whether they are regular readers of fantasy or not... but I will never understand why. Maybe there is a bit of a story in it - but it is certainly not worth spending the amount of time this book takes to read on it... it is unbelievably boring and overly descriptive in the worst possible way (and I usually do like description). But this is wretched. And no I am not just lacking in good taste or "maturity". Perhaps there ARE things to admire about this book... but it is a very very boring read. And overrated by far.

Summary: Great books that are more historical than they are fantasy
Review: Yes, I meant what I said up there. While Tolkien was a genius for creating the world of Middle Earth, these books are closer to historical fiction than they are fantasy. But that does not necessarily detract in any way from them. I'm not saying it doesn't. However, I am going to point out a few things, since so many people fawn over these books.

First of all, I will say again: Tolkien was a genius. I bow to his ability to create the whole history of Middle Earth. However, there a few things he did not do so well, and these *must* be taken into account. Tolkien could not write women, period, the end. He was either afraid to, or just chose not to write them into his story. Either way, the truth remains: women play background roles in the LotR trilogy. The reader barely knows Arwen or Rosie, we barely know Galadrial, and as for Eowyn...let me say that this is one of the few areas where I will praise the movies, and condemn the books. I *HATED* book-Eowyn. I thought she was selfish, foolish, and quite frankly, I didn't care about what happened to her.

Second, Tolkien was not a character writer. A person has to read beyond the words to try to figure out what the characters are really like. He concentrated more on the world, and the conflict, and I'm sorry, but I prefer the characters. In my opinion, if you don't care about the characters, why should you care about what happens to them?

Third, the books are *very* slow-moving. They are beautifully descriptive, with a gorgeous language, but that does not change the fact that they are slow-moving. The Battle for Helm's Deep (in my copy) is ten pages. *TEN* pages! There was no sense of urgency in there, just a gentle rhythm, which I did not think fit with what was going on. Another example of slow-moving would be the whole Tom Bombadil episode. When I re-read Fellowship, I had a tough time getting through that part, it was *so* boring. o_O

Fourth, in regards to characters, oftentimes Tolkien opted out, to "tell" rather than "show". For example, Gimli and Legolas's all-of-a-sudden, out-of-nowhere friendship. The only warning you get of the two of them becoming friends is something like: "and Gimli and Legolas grew to be friends." *blink* HUH? was my reaction when I read the books, (which I read *before* the movies came out.)

All that aside, I have to admit I do enjoy these books. I do believe they're worthy of 5 stars, with everything Tolkien did with them. His books *are* the ones other fantasy writers ultimately turn to for guidance. But in all that, I think people sometimes forget that no one is perfect, therefore a person cannot be great *everything*. And my criticism of these books is no more than my own opinion, coming from someone who sees both good points and bad points of things. I don't think these books are bad, but all I'm saying is that they have flaws, just like everything else in this world.

Summary: One of my favorites
Review: All four of these books are great. And believe it or not, The Hobbit was originally written to be a children's book. And if these books interest you, you may also want to check out the Silmarillion, which is the story of the elves. It takes place before The Hobbit. It's basically a history of Middle Earth starting from actually before elves appeared.

And if you liked the movies, you'll love the books!

Summary: Eternal Entertainment
Review: I would have to say there is no other book that has repeatedly made an appearance throughout the course of my life than _The Lord_.

Even _Alice in Wonderland_, _The Tale of Two Cities_ and other such literary notables fail to take precedence over _The Lord_!

It effectively became part of my high school memories as we passed the book about, nearly a cult hit amongst us all.
The joke was on us when we learned how long ago it had been published.

I watched as my kids caught the fever and passed the same book about. Now, it is a cinematic celebration and the editions go on and on. It is quite an achievement for a novel to take on such notoriety and I am grateful that I was able to have the opportunity to enjoy the read, as well as the movie.

Summary: The lord of the ring...
Review: Gollum, a disgusting creature, lost the magic Ring for Bilbo, Mr. of Mordom but the soul of Sauron was in the ring. Moreoverthe owner has the magic of the ring but the truth the magic was Sauron's power. After that Bilbo gave the ring to Frodo beacuse his was very old.So the bok ends in this part thata Frodo stays with the ring.
This part of the biggest work by J.R.R. Tolkien can be considerate evil, exciting and surprising. While I was reading this book , I wondered what willa happen in the end.As a result, it's really interesting and yo would like to know all the details, the end and the other books.
