Summary: Simply the best!
Review: Not a lot to add to what others have noted.

This began my love of reading when I was in middle school. I have since rediscovered them. Now, a practicing psychiatrist, I firmly feel that these books have marvelous gifts to offer. I refer to them consistently when describing developmental processes, group dynamics, or internal conflicts to medical students and junior residents.

These are really the first and perhaps the best of the genre. What followed through the writings of C.S. Lewis (Narnia and others), George Lucas (Star Wars), and even the new kid on the block (Harry Potter) are but the offspring of a standard set by Tolkien.

Truly magnificient.

Mike Higgins, M.D.

Summary: The Series that started it all...
Review: Being the "mature reader" that everyone said I was, my grandmother gave me The Hobbit for Christmas, and my mother urged me to read it. I was only in second grade at the time, and finishing up the Narnia series; I didn't read it until that summer...and then discovered all I'd been missing.
After devouring The Hobbit, my mom got out her tattered old copies of the three Lord of the Rings books for me. I went insane...LotR is, as anyone who's read the books knows, even better than the Hobbit. Now, nearly five years later, I still continue to read and reread of the heroic, enchanting, and epic tale of Frodo (a kind-hearted Hobbit burdened with an evil, mind-possing Ring of Magic)and the Company on their quest to cast the Ring into the Cracks of Doom...therefore destroying it and saving the Middle Earth from destruction.

Summary: The best books ever
Review: This was a wonderful book with amazing detail and I loved it! As this book is read, you could imagine what these people are going through. This story makes you see the good and evil in men, and how power can corrupt even the wisest. A good example of this was how in "The Fellowship of the Ring" Saruman the White the wisest of the wizards fooled Gandalf to try to retrieve the ring from him. This is one of the best books i've read and i recommend it to any one, any age.

Summary: Middle-Earth
Review: .. is astonishing, breath-taking! Every single time I read the Lord of the Rings and its prequel, the Silmarillion, I am filled with emotions of joy, then sadness then joy - and over again. This is an adventure unmatched. The legend is unique in all its form, and it so beautifully encompass love and dedication in a way that makes you wish you were there. If you let it be, this is far more than just a book.

Summary: Great boxed set
Review: The books within this boxed set are everything all the other reviewers have said - if you haven't read them (like myself!) go out and get a copy, somewhere, anywhere.

As for this boxed set, I purchased it hoping that it would be a high-quality collection of the books that I could keep for a long time. The hardcover three-volume edition had me interested, but these were at the local bookstore, so I picked them up. Let me tell you, I'm not disappointed.

Where some said the hardcover had horrible type, this series has some great type - quality of the books is very nice, they all have a good heft to them, and the appearance of the box just standing is very beautiful. Quality-made boxed set, I recommend it to anyone who's interested in getting a good copy of these books (plus the Hobbit!) .

Summary: What more can be said?
Review: Everyone knows about this classic set of books by now. I wish to add that I first read them about 25 years ago. I re-read the Hobbitt last year and am half-way through the trilogy now. They are more wonderful than I remembered. This particular boxed-set is a nice presentation of the classics in a quality size and binding for paperback. Let me just conclude by saying "Frodo Lives!"

Summary: The Best of Its Kind
Review: Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit. He lives in a fantasyland with dragons, wizards, and many other magical and bizarre creatures. He spends his days sleeping and eating in his comfortable underground home where he is left alone in quiet comfort. One day, a band of fourteen dwarves and a wizard come to his doorstep. Little does he know, he is about to embark upon a journey that he can not possibly fathom.

Bilbo and his newly found companions begin their adventure from Bilbo's hometown, Shire. They are driven by the vision of obtaining the wealth of treasures guarded by the dragon, Smaug, in the Lonely Mountain.

They make their way through the Misty Mountains, where they encounter goblins and orcs, man-eating wolves. After Bilbo finds a ring with powers to make its bearer invisible, they make their way out of the mountain, in front of Mirkwood. Mirkwood Forest is the home of many dangerous creatures. They continue through the forest and find themselves at the Lonely Mountain. The dragon goes down to the town below the mountain, after hearing that they had sheltered Bilbo. Before the town is totally demolished, a man named Bard shoots an arrow at the dragon's bare spot and slays it.

Many creatures and people come to claim the treasure. Everyone ends up banding together against the goblins and orcs. The goblins and orcs end up losing the battle by very little. The treasure is evenly divided and Bilbo makes his way home with Gandalf.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the best books I have ever read. I would recommend this book to almost any reader. You would especially love The Hobbit if you are into adventure stories or enjoyed the Red Wall or Harry Potter books.

Summary: Tolkien master of literature!
Review: One problem i see is that The Hobbit does not appeal to most people, I know many people that did not read Lord of the rings due to that The Hobbit bored them out thier minds! But I ask for anyone who is ready to experience the book of a life-time, go read Lord of the Rings.
The reason millions of people love Lord of the Rings is that in its own way Lord of the rings is one of those few books that will transport you into a world like never before. Tolkien makes the world just enough like ours and just enough different that you really think it is true!
Read this series of books and you always know who is the greatest author in History!

Summary: Incredible just plain incredible
Review: One night in college, I asked a friend if he had a book I could read and he gave me the Fellowship of the Ring. After finishing 100 pages, I went back to my friend and got all three books. I read all three books in 18 hours and did not eat or sleep. I literally could not put them down. Even now after 10 years, I still take them out and read them every 6 months. I am looking forward to the movie but am not sure if they will do justice to the books.
