Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Unique and the book that started all
Review: I read the book every couple of years for the last 16 years. This are the books that started all. Without this, there would not have been all those other pseudostories. The setting, the plot, the characters, everything was fantastic then, and it is still wonderful nowadays.
He did a fantastic job and nobody will ever surpass it. Is like saying that some sci-fi moovie will be better than Star Wars. They may try, but it won't happen. When somebody does the FIRST, ORIGINAL THING, everything else is just trying to be as good, but can not pass it. Let face it, the originals are always based on original thoughts and ideas. No references, no past works... after that, everybody else can use that work as a reference.
Regarding the story is simple. The eternal clash between good and evil in a fantastic universe.
This is a MUST READ for everyone. I have only read one more fantastic book after this one and it wasn't even close.

Summary: Simply Great Literature
Review: Time will tell if Harry Potter can claim to be a literary classic and a fantasy masterwork, but Bilbo Baggins has that stature, though he be but a small hobbit. He begins this fantastic look at Middle Earth.

As small as hobbits may be, "The Lord of the Rings" ranks supremely as being some of the finest, well-written fiction to be produced in the English language. In "The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings," you'll get it all (and save a few bucks in the process!).

Tolkien's delicious use of written diction and depth of storyline is why his famous hobbit enjoys the lengthy stay in libraries that he has. Compare it to other great trilogies and tales, from "Alice in Wonderland" to CS Lewis' "Narnia" trilogy.

A lot of poorly written novels litter our library shelves, but shining is "The Lord of the Rings." Tolkien used his vast understanding of archetypes, ancient storytelling, and the body of fiction. He took years to write these tales, laboring over ever tiny phrase... as opposed to cranking them out within months. He didn't write for the marketplace, but the marketplace loves him.

I fully recommend "The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings." A great deal for some great books by a great writer.

Thinking about Bilbo now... some eggs and bacon would taste good just about now (read "The Hobbit" and you'll know the reference).

Summary: Lengthy at times
Review: I've read the set and would have bought them here if they would have been in hardcover. I'm sorry if it offends, but great books deserve longevity and the feel that comes only from solid bindings.

Summary: From a first time Fantasy Reader
Review: This is first time I've ever read anything to this magnitude of fantasy/sci-fi. I'd recomment this book to anyone whose got free time

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Three stars?? Are you crazy???
Review: Only three stars??? Only three stars for what is according to millions of people the greatest series of books ever written???? Damn right. I actually would have only given LOTR one star were it not for Tolkien's obvious talents as a writer not to mention the beauty and completeness of the world he has created.

LOTR is very much a series you either love or you hate and as such, it falls flat for me. Technically, there is nothing at fault here. Tolkien's prose is often beautiful, switching fluidly between light whimsy and stark passages in the style of an ancient history. Middle Earth is such a wonderfully real place that even non-fans such as myself must take notice and appreciate what Tokien has accomplished with his work. Unfortunately, I find the characters for the most part flat and lifeless. All, with the possible exception of the hobbits and Gollum (who are quite entertaining and interesting) are simply archetypes drawn from the mythological hero's journey, given loose flesh and free reign to talk in long, listless passages about Middle-Earth's painstaking history. There is a dreadful lack of femininity, the female characters all relegated to extremely minor roles. Reflective of the time it was written, the books seem to be all for the notion that a woman should be seen and not heard. I've heard people talk about the depth of characterization in Tolkien's work, but really, there's not one truly believable character in here. Reading it is like watching a movie with fantastic sets, costumes and script but terribly wooden actors. I had to force myself to finish all three books.

I would reccomend the series, as obviously so many people have found something great in it whereas I have not. It is, as with most things, a matter of opinion. I will however caution you against the huge barrage of five star reviews that you see as you scroll down the page. LOTR is not the greatest piece of fiction ever written, not even close to something like Ulysses or War and Peace. In my opinion, its not even the greatest piece of fantasy fiction ever written. It is however, a fine history of events that never happened and a great atlas of a world that never was. Don't let your expectations get too high and you may be surprised.

The movie looks pretty damn cool though...

Summary: what's the deal
Review: Am I the only person in the world who didn't like this book? what's the deal? i read the book and i was throughly dissapointed. i really don't see why everyone rants and raves over hobbits and dwarves and such. is the only reason because it was the first real good fantasy book? People need to get past tradition of what they grew up with and that the hobbit was there favorite book as a five year old. that's exactly the point though in my opinion- the book is childish and doesn't compare to some of the fantasy writers of our time. people need to get past there hang-ups that with this being a legend of the time and see it as it is- childish and just plain not very good.
