Rating: Summary: Great book, but sometimes slow... Review: I finally read the Lord of the Rings series since the movie came out, and I really enjoyed them... most of the time. The story is excellent, the characters are perfect, the places and descriptions are difficult to top, but there are many places where it drags and sometimes it lacks the some of the action I expect from fantasy stories. This is one story where I think the movie was actually better than the book, but I would still recommend anyone who enjoys fantasy to read it. The best parts about the book overweigh the bad, just give yourself some time to read it.
Rating: Summary: Lord of the RIngs Review: This book series is a must for any fantasy lover...and anyone who doesn't like fantasy, too! This story has something for everyone: adventure, tragedy, magic, freindship... the list goes on and on. The depth and detail is beautiful, and the story is great. It is all about a small hobbit, Frodo, and his companions as they struggle to destroy a magic ring of power before it's ..master, Sauron, can claim it and destroy the world. This journey takes them through the calm and beautiful lands of the elves, to the dark and dangerous mines of moria and the desolate wastes of Mordor, with many exqusite and beautiful lands in between. These books are the kind where they never stay on the shel for long before you pick them up to read again.
Rating: Summary: "Come here, my precious..." Review: These are classic books. I bought them for 2 reasons: 1 because my whole class was reading it, 2 because their making a movie. I have read The Hobbit and am on page 85 of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I'd say that The Hobbit is probably one of the best books i've ever read, but it gets confuseing at times. The maps aren't really that well drawn and there are spelling errors, but that's because J.R.R. Tolkien is English or something and that's how they spell stuff there. Anyway, The Hobbit is a very exciting fairy tale about a little hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, mind you, who is chosen by the great wizard, Gandalf, to recover stolen "jools" that are rightfully the dwarves that were taken from them by the evil dragon, Smaug. They venture many places in this book, such as as shift-shaping bear's house, the goblins' cave, Smaug's mountain, and many other places. It is extremly detailed,so detail in fact that it's very hard not to get lost while reading it...and yes, that's a bad thing. Overall i would rate this book 9/10 and (what i've read) of LOTH a 7/10. If you like this book, you should defenitely check out the Harry Potter series... you may be suprised.I know I was.
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: What can one say of Lord of the Rings? It is the greatest fiction of all time. I'm serious too. Im a big book buff and I truly believe Tolkien's literature is the best. The most in-depth world ever created, with history, struggles, and societies rivaling our own. On a side note, I saw the movie, and Jackson did an amazing job translating the book onto the screen. Its not completly true to the book, but it is impossible to be exactly true. My recommendation: If you havnt read it, read it If you have read it, read it again! Also, read the Simirillain. Its a hard read but worth it!
Rating: Summary: Magic! Review: I was read all of these books when I was a child as my bedtime stories. It griped me then and it still has its hold. I'd like to see anyone not moved not only by Bilbo Baggins' story in The Hobbit but of his nephew Frodo Baggins who you follow throughout the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The stories of Good vs Evil, Friendship, and Courage represented through these books will appeal to children of 5 to 105! You start With The Hobbit: A story about Bilbo Baggins. An ordinary Hobbit who wants to lead a quiet ordinary Life. In comes the Wizard Gandalf and a gang of Dwarves! Suddenly Bilbo gets himself into an adventure and doesn't know how to get out of it! All he knows is he has now been nominated their "Burglar" by his Friend Gandalf. It's by pure accident that Bilbo stumbles on to the "One Ring" (and the Creature Gollum) that will lead us on to the next books in this set. And it doesn't leave you there. There are Trolls, Elves, Giant Spiders, and a Mean Draogn still left to visit before we wonder what the importance of this strange Ring is? And why does Tolkin write another three books about it? This One Ring is the most powerful dark tool of the evil Sauron! His spirit is bound to this Ring and while it is still around Sauron can return with his army and Destroy all of Middle Earth! The One Ring MUST be destroyed and as Frodo is Bilbo's heir (now that Bilbo has left the Shire) HE is the one to carry the Ring to Mordor! That is where Sauron and his evil army lies, that is the place he forged the Ring, and that is the place it must be destroyed. Sound simple? It's not! It takes Three books (one just as gripping as the other) with many twists and turns before we find out the end and what happens to Middle Earth. Will the Elves, Dwarves, Big People (men) and Halflings (hobbits) all work together to destroy Sauron and his evil army? Can Frodo bring the Ring to the Mountain or will another creature/army stop him?...... A GREAT tale at a GREAT price
Rating: Summary: Magnificent Review: There is only one word to discribe them. MAGNIFICENT !!!
Rating: Summary: It was great! Review: I read these books a while ago. I found it difficult to get going at first, and the first real "difficult" book for me as a 7th grader (though, as I write this review I am above the age limit for using the regular review forum). I must admit to falling asleep a few times during the first book, but something drove me on to read them. I cried during all of them, and the ends to each book make them all worthwhile. Not reccomended to younger audiences or people without a good deal of time an patience.
Rating: Summary: Don't lose your opportunity Review: I purchased and read this wonderful book after first hearing that Hollywood was about to release the first (in a forthcoming trilogy) of "The Lord of the Rings" movies. I didn't want to spoil the reading experience and miss out on a classic. Now is your opportunity to do the same. I've seen and enjoyed the movie, but it simply cannot do justice to the whole story. Wait to see the movie on DVD if you must, but read this book first. The delightful characters and enchanting land are brought to life in printed text as Hollywood could never do. Take the time to savor this story and it's telling.
Rating: Summary: Be forewarned: Review: You may be in for a bit more than you expected. Not only is this one of the most compelling and immersive texts ever written, the edition I was sent (having had to buy them again after some friends "borrowed" them permanently) was covered with photos and art deco from the New Line movies. The whole reason I picked this edition was because it was the same 1991 version I read the first time. Great books, but if you're looking for something that's not a movie tie-in, shop in person.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Set! Review: I'm reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time, and this set is beautiful! The price really seemed to be right, you get The Hobbit to match the others, and it seems like they put a lot of work into getting the text corrected. Beautiful story, beautiful set of books.
