Summary: Wonderful
Review: I read The Lord of the Rings just a few of months ago, and I can truthfully say i have never read any books i have loved or treasured more. Tolkien brings me to a world of beauty and magic, full of good and evil. The characters are wonderful. Although some have thought them a little dry and unconvincing, I thought they were perfect, and I belived them completly. This story stole my heart away. I will never again find a book more beloved to me.

Summary: You can't really go wrong with Tolkien..
Review: ..even if you are a "casual" Tolkien reader like I am. I'll admit I skipped most of the "background" stuff--I just want to read the story, not know all the details of the prior and current kings, races, and civilizations of Middle Earth. Don't get me wrong, that stuff is great for some people, I guess I am just not enough of a rabid fan :) The books, anyway, are awesome. The story brings together a classic good vs. evil struggle and manages to work in quintessential issues of loyalty, bravery, heroism, mercy, friendship, obsession, materialism, greed, self-sacrifice, self-doubt.. also adds in some biblical issues and a little magic for variety. This is a book of tremendous literary importance and shouldn't be missed by anyone. The movie is good, too, but as always the book is better.

Summary: Great Plot... Sort of Boring
Review: The Lord of the Rings probably is the best epic series of the century, but I wouldn't know. The books tooke me about 4 months to read! My favorite part of the book was the Two Towers, because it was the one that moved along the fastest... I don't really have a good attention span, and Tolkien must have really loved history!!! For example, in the Fellowship of the Ring, Elrond's council. This chapter is about 30 pages long, and that one tok me a week! It just drones on and on throughout that whole book, part of the two towers, and about 3/5ths of the return of the king. I read one appendix, and sort of browsed at the family trees, and I was completely bored. Tolkien scorned his friend, C.S. Lewis, for not having enough details in his books. AT LEAST THEY MOVED ALONG. LOTR is a very thorough book, and it has a great plot, but it was too much for my attention span.

Summary: Don't Get Me Wrong, It Has A Great Plot...
Review: I have read all the books in the L.O.T.R. series, and have also seen the movie. These books had their good and bad aspects. I think they had a great plot, and I thought it was really cool how Tolkien was able to create all the elvish lore ect... However, there were many aspects I didn't like. I thought that some things about the relationship of Frodo and Sam were a little odd. I think that it was a bit sick that although Sam and Frodo were friends, Sam was also Frodo's servent, really more of a willing slave, because Sam was not payed for his services. I also thought that although it would have been on a subconsious level, I think that Sam may have had some repressed homeosexual feelings towards Frodo. For example, in other books that I have read of the same genre, a man might speak about how great his love is for a woman. Sam doesn't usually talk about how much he loves his wife, but he often talks about how much he loves Frodo. I do not have any problem with homosexuality, or men loving other men, as brothers, but I really wish that it wasn't kept in such a way it seemed to me like a dirty secret. I also didn't like how Tolkien represents women. Arwen is a total sap. Eowyn I really admired, because she was a girl making a differnece and showing she could be just as good as men. Then she decides that this is WRONG, and becomes an Arwen clone! I also hated how Tolkien represented women with Shelob, the black spider, threatening and menicing. I also have to say that although I loved the plot, I cared nothing for any of the characters. When Frodo "dies" in Shelbo's lair, meant to be a moment of sadness, I was compleletly unmoved. In Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, when Coll died, I cried. Frodo on the other hand, was not at all loveable. The only charaters I did like were Gollum and Shelob. Ironicly, they were the most human characters of all instead of just cookie-cutter sterotypes like the rest. Like I said, dont' get me wrong, this book has a great plot, but if your looking for a book about lovable characters, with guys and girls on equal grounds, leave this book alone and pick up Narnia or Prydain Chronicles.

PS: If you're looking for some laughs, read Bored Of The Rings. It's EXCELLENT!

Summary: The Hobbit's Nifty Book
Review: At the first glance of the cover of The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien, you would probley think the book would be boring. This book proves that the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover", is 100% true. Tolkiens one of a kind imagination and talent reflects in this book. He lets you experiance what it's like to be in the mind of a daring, courageous, and adverturous hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo and his loyal friends decide to take a journey over mysterious mountains, through dark forests, and into deep caverns all in search of the hiddemn treasure. On this journey the friends run into many evil creatures, testing their strength, courage, and imagination. Most of Tolkiens books are fantasy like the three sequals that are part of the hobbit story. The three sequals are, Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. This book is sure to make you yern for more of J.R.R Tolkiens fabulous books. I would recommend this book to anyone from the ages of 12+. Will Bilbo and his friends survive the awful creatures blocking their dream? Only you can find out by reading this fantastic book!

Summary: the movie was better, spare yourself....
Review: As a dedicated reader of 20 or more years,i went back and read this after seeing the movie. honestly, skip the books, the writing is stilted, dialog poor. 20 some years ago, we all read tolkien and loved it, becuase there was not a lot else to read!. i worked my way thru this and prayed everyone would just fall into the crack of doom, and end the book. my reading friends all concurred w me,can't wait for part two of the movie.

Summary: Hello Hobbit
Review: This book was a fantastic, scary and sad story all at the same time. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien tells about a hobbit named Bilbo who goes on an adventure as a robber to take back a long lost treasure. Smaug the dragon stole the treasure from the dwarves thousands of years ago. Now Bilbo, the 13 dwarves and the mysterious wizard Gandalf must go take back the treasure. The author made this book so interesting by putting in so much detail in every little sentence. An event at the end of the book may change all your feelings about the book.

Summary: THE GREATEST WORK OF ALL TIME
Review: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are by far the GREATEST LITERARY WORKS OF ALL TIME, The Lord of the Rings, no matter what people see it in stores as, is NOT a trilogy, it is ONE book, entitled THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King are not separate stories in themselves.
