Rating: Summary: Magnum Opus of a Great Soul Review: I first read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings about the time the author died in 1973. I've since read the Hobbit another four or five times, and his trilogy twice. I've read about everything else he's published.John Ronald Ruel Tolkien was a quiet, peaceful man who was orphaned at a young age, raised by his parish priest, suffered shell shock during the Great War and later became a sensitive, loving father and husband, master of languages, friend of C.S. Lewis, and died complete. He was a man of faith who made up a world unrelated to his religion where the characters there, also, had to struggle against evil. That's what the Lord of the Rings is about. While the movies look like they'll be good, please don't pass up the opportunity to bathe in Tolkien's printed word. There are so many sublime, powerful moments to be discovered. I was seized by racking sobs at the author's narrative of Sam contemplating the stars while Frodo slept in the heart of Mordor. Please take the time to read these books and find your own great moments.
Rating: Summary: How can you not like Tolkien? Review: I like Tolkien and lately have been reading this again and again. I tried to read the history of Middle Earth but just couldn't get into it. These are the REAL stories!
Rating: Summary: A fine example of american literature. Review: I read The Hobbit because my brother had to in his 10th grade CP English class. I love finishing books before him. Well anyway, I also read it because I'll be in that class next year. And it was facinating. Any fantasy book will have some good things in it. But, this was wondrfull! J.R.R. Tolkien has a vivid imagination. The creation of middle-earth, the characters (mainly Bilbo, Gandalf, and Smeagle), and the description was beautifully done. The story keeps you captive untill the end. My only complant is they ate way too much. And then, the main event THE LORD OF THE RINGS! No set of books has been so vividly written. I thought no books could match my Harry Potter series, but I was wrong. I laughed, cried, and yelled through all four books. If you love fantasy and are searching for books that can take you to another time and place, THE LORD OF THE RINGS box set is for you!
Rating: Summary: the lord of the rings the hobbit Review: I rate this book the lord of the rings the hobbit ,five stars. The Auther of this book is J.R.R. Tolkien. My favorite caracter is Gandalf. The book is about Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo Bgaggins is a Hobbit that wants to be left alone. Gandalf wanted Bilbo to go on an adventure to find the in the mountains. But every time Gandalf asked him he would just turn him down. The next day Gandalf came tp Bilbo's house with 13 dwarves. Then Bilbo was drawn into their quest. On there ouest bilbo and the dwarves are captured by trolls. If you want to find out waht happens to the crew read the book.
Rating: Summary: An Incredible Masterpiece Review: The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are by far the greatest work in Science Fiction Fantasy by any author. Tolkien created the most provocative, enchanting series making this the benchmark series by which all others seem to be judged. I recently re-read this entire series, inspired by the film, as I am sure most fans were. I found returning to this series after having read this over 20 years ago was quite a joy. I found the series just as captivating as when I first read it, and appreciated it even more so after all these years. Tolkien was truly a genius in terms of story telling, but additionally I found his portrayal of the ultimate struggle between good and evil to be right on the mark. There are still Sauron's and Gollum's in this world, as well as a need for heroes like Frodo and Sam. This series is truly a remarkable work by an incredible author who could portray the fundamental travails of mankind in a captivating story. Newcomers to this series will certainly enjoy this set, and it will most certainly rise to the top of your memorable favorites list in literature. This set deserves above all others the sometimes over-used description of 'classic', as it is an incredible masterpiece. This is a work you will treasure.

If you like fantasy books (not only are they fantasy, but they are action-packed) these books are for you! The books are one-of-a-kind. J. R. R. Tolkien has the most creative imagination! Rating: Summary: The best books ever! Review: Good versus evil has been the backdrop of countless stories throught the ages. In Tolkien's books this theme reached a new level, and they started the enitre modren fantasy genire. This timeless classic can be enjoyed by all, and I am sure that everyone will obtain a sense of fear, wonder, suprise, and suspense such as I have while reading. The Hobbit is the first book in the series, and it cronicles one hobbit's adventure thru middle earth to the lair of a dragon, which he is sent to slay inorder to recapture the lonely mountain. The other books are actually one story seperated into three parts, and they tell of another hobbits quest to destroy an evil ring, and save the wourld. All are exellent, and good reading.
Rating: Summary: A MUST for all Fantasy Fans!!! Review: "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" are most likely the best set of books that were ever written. What's better than getting all four of these great novels in a beautiful set like this one? Most likely in the literary sense, nothing. These books were the books that started the whole fantasy genre and are the stories of people that go on quests to do something and along the way discover the meaning of true friendship, what they have inside of them, and many other things. These books give great messages to children and adults alike. "The Hobbit" is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a band of dwarves, and the wizard Gandalf the Grey as they set out for The Lonely Mountain to reclaim the lost treasure that was taken by Smaug the Dragon from an ancient dwarven civilization. Along the way we meet wonderful creatures, friend and foe. Bilbo Baggins finds a ring in this story and we learn more of it in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "The Fellowship of the Ring" is the first book in "The Lord of the Rings" and it tells that the ring that Bilbo found is actually The One Ring that was forged by the Dark Lord Sauron and this ring has he power to rule over all of Middle Earth. Frodo Baggins is the heir of the ring and along with a fellowship of eight others they set out to destroy the ring. It is not until the next two books of the trilogy that we know the rest of the story. "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" are the next two books in the series and continue the story of The Fellowship of the Ring. These two novels are even greater than the first due to more adventure, suspense, world building, character development, and a wonderful cast of new characters that are met in these novels. "The Hobbit," while not as good as "The Lord of the Rings," is still a very good story. I consider "The Lord of the Rings" to be one novel and the best novel that was ever written. The characters that J.R.R. Tolkien created are the best that I have ever read of and he develops even the most minor chacaters through the set of books with great skill. His world of Middle Earth is bretahtaking and each time you open up one of the books you feel as if you are there in Middle Earth. J.R.R. Tolkien happens to be a writer that knows the english language very well and writes very precisely and with great beauty. His invention of other languages is astonsihing and it is great to read and hear the Elves speaking and singing in their native tongue. These books for all of the reasons above and many more make this book so wonderful. A little note on this edition: This edition is comprised of four mass market paperback books, "The Hobbit," "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers," and "The Return of the King." This edition is good for somebody that won't be reading this more than once. If you think that you'll read this more than once I recommend that you buy a better quality edition. The pictures on the covers of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy books are taken from the movie and "The Hobbit" cover shows a picture of Gandalf walking towards Bilbo Baggins' home. This is a good editon but definitely not the best one that you can purchase. "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" are the best books that were ever written, in my opinion. There is no reason that a fantasy fan should not read these books. They are the greatest works of fiction and with each new book you read of these four you will realize how great these are. These are books that I will be reading over and over again for many years to come. I strongly recommend that you purchase these books; they are too great to be missed out on. Happy Reading!
