Rating: Summary: To those who find this book boring Review: I don't mean to sound condescending and I'm saying this in all humility: if you find this series boring, I think you are very very unlucky.
Rating: Summary: Dedicated to the doubting Thomases Review: If you are wondering whether to read this or not (its an ordeal, all right, just like climbing mount Everest was for Hillary - I bet he loved every bit of the struggle).Other than that, suffice it to say that the review by tabula_rasa echoes most of my feelings. This book was grand, still is, and will remain so. Its not just a fantasy series, just as Shakespeare is not merely literature.
Rating: Summary: Amazing!! still cant stop reading this. Review: I think anyone who does not rate this with 5 stars must have no imagination. This book brought out the imagination that i thought i never had, these books i feel apply more to adults than to children due to most kids in the 21st century not knowing what a book is (apart from the literate ones). I have read these books 2 times now and i still continue to read it about every 4 months or so which shows how innovative and creative this book is. It beats sci fi books hands down. Tolkien was a genius, all his books feature so much detail that you actually think your there. And you might want to read on satre after reading this it made me think more. This book is very empathic and you can really relate to the characters to the point of thinking for them. Anyway i havent read a book with this fantasy genre epic as good yet and i read alot so it's very good unless you prefer books with action in every second and arent bothered about the detail. Love it.
Rating: Summary: Review #1111 - This book is BOOOORING. Review: Okay, it might have been good 50 years ago, but after reading a bunch of fantasy books and SF and playing nearly every RPG from ten years back, this book offers nothing new, no provocative ideas and no surprises. It's just an overlong travelogue with generic D&D-like characters. Yeah, this book was written before there was anything like D&D and most fantasy fiction but I look at it from today's perspective and the verdict is: BORING!
Rating: Summary: Hobbits, Elves, Orcs Review: Tolkien's works come off the page as vivid and real. I enjoyed reading these books years ago and I still enjoy reading them today. The Hobbit marks the beginning of these wonderful stories and is a delight all by itself. The next set of books are best read together, starting with Fellowship of the Ring. I give this my highest recommendation.
Rating: Summary: Timeless Treasures Review: The reading material of teenagers and young adults today seems to be made up of two groups, books that are enjoyable to read, or modern, and the older, less sought after classics by authors like Hemingway, Fitzgerald, etc. Often times, it seems like there is no middle ground, and that it looks like classics will soon be left behind. However, there is one set of novels that link the classics to today's modern, more enjoyable reading material. Lord of the Rings was written in the 1950's, back when Vonnegut and Steinbeck reigned, and it remains today, one of the most popular trilogies of the twentieth century, and one of the most beloved books in the history of literature. The reason it is so, is that it was the first of its kind. Granted, there were fantasy epics being written around that time and before that, but Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit took it to a grander scale...making the fantasy and seemingly simple themes of friendship and honor much more deep with the Christian allegories rooted in its poetic writing. The only other set of novels that can claim this type of writing are The Chronicles of Narnia. However, Lord of the Rings' style of subtlety in terms of writing the novel as a Christian allegory are the product of more deep thought than C.S. Lewis. Even though The Chronicles of Narnia are wonderful books, writing Lord of the Rings the way Tolkien did proved to be much more of a winning angle. By the ending of 'The Grey Havens', you want to start over. You don't want to leave Bilbo and Frodo and Gandalf. You feel like they are all your best friends and that they are leaving you for good. Tolkien remains one of the best character writers of all time because of this bond you feel with his characters by the end. You wish there were more books, and you also go away with a smile on your face. For the novels are so well-written, that you aren't just reading about Frodo's quest to Mount Doom, you are right next to him, watching everything. You are also right next to Aragorn and Legolas and Gimli during their battles with the orcs and legions of Mordor. You have, by the ending, lived an entire adventure of unforgettable proportions. And, trust me, you will want to go again.
Rating: Summary: Four is better Review: I love the cover art of this boxed set. I also like that you receive The Hobbit with it. Most boxed sets only include The Lord Of The Rings.
Rating: Summary: immature Review: I read these books when I was 14 and I was thoroughly impressed I loved them reread them and all things Tolkien. But since then I'v grown up physically and mentally and after starting to read them again and realised how stupid it truely is. I'm greatful for these books because they motivated me to read bigger and better things but I shudder to think how so many are so big about this fantasy nonsence. The heroes like Gandalf and Aragorn are infallible saints while the enemies are black evil creatures with no morals whatsoever. It reads like some Christian propaganda story for adolescents. If your an adult don't bother with this farce, it passes itself off as an intellectual book but its really the product of an old arrogant man's daydreams. Book for kids thats it.
Rating: Summary: Great!!!!!! Review: This is a classic and one of the greatest works of all time. Tolkien must have been a genius to create a detailed and imaginative world from scratch. The low rating I must apologize for. I am rating this edition and not the book. The book deserves 10 stars. This edition is cheap, with constant misspellings and faded and worn print all over the book. Spend your good money on a nicer edition and you will be justly rewarded.
Rating: Summary: A Crazy Person's View. (re-view, that is...) Review: The Lord of the Rings is absolutely the best novel I have read in my life. J. R. R. Tolkein, as if by magic, creates a world that he completely made up; a world that we all know to be nonexistant. But through his words, it becomes as real as the world we live in. The story is about Frodo Baggins, heir to Bilbo (if you haven't read the Hobbit, do so right now...). He recieves Bilbo's magic ring when Bilbo wanders off to write his book. But this ring turns out to be the One Ring of Power, which Sauron (the really evil dude) is trying to get back so he can overtake the world and kill everyone and evil stuff like that. So off Frodo goes on a great adventure, and whatnot... you can read the rest... If there's one thing that I think Tolkein was a bit crazy on, it has to be his descriptive qualities. Yes, they're frankly awesome, but it's going a bit far when you give every horse ten different names. But he makes up for that... you'll see. Overall: I LOVE this book!!!!!
