Rating: Summary: "One ring to rule them all" Review: How do you write a book review? Hmmm. It was the year 1989, Hurricane Hugo hit St.Croix big time, and there was nothing to do. I was eleven, when my parents send me to stay with my cousins. It was then that I picked up The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings part I,II,and III soon followed I was (still) hooked. When I heard that there was going to do a movie based on J.R.R.Tolkien books I couldn't wait.Being the first of four, I felt that Bilbo story needed to be told, and it was, sort of,(The Party, Rivendell) in the movie, but that was okay. I am now twenty-four years old, and I am reading the books for the fourth time, I think. You know they say that you can never do a movie all just base on a book, and its true. How did Aragorn meet Erwyn? How does Legolas really know about Aragorn, you know, those kind of stuff they did not add in the movie, In these books you have everything, from romance to comedy. You even have maps, family trees, index, poems, places, I'm telling you, Mr.Tolkien left nothing out. It's a complicated read, lots of going back and forth, but it's lots of fun. In the book, I do not want to say to much, but you know the good guys always win, although the love between Aragorn and ? is... If you saw the movie, and haven't read the book yet, read it now, it will tak ecare of some of those unanswered questions you may have stiring in you head. All in all It's a good book (s)to have, and to read over and over...
Rating: Summary: These are my FAVORITE books ever Review: I am an avid fantasy reader and I enjoy books where the plot and characters are so excellently portrayed. You just don't doubt that Gandalf is good or that Sauron is bad, you just know from the way Tolkien describes them, and no Star Warsish endings where Gandalf(the father figure) turns out to be bad, this series show's that there are still books inthe world that don't need surprise endings and plot turns and sexual content. i still appreciate a good fantasy. My father first read the books to me when I was [younger] and we went to see the movie last year, I would rcommend for anyone who has not yet seen the movie, to read the books and then buy the Dvd or Vhs, Both do the book terrific justice and leave out only scenes that could be done without.. But while the movie was good,t he books were excellent, and I urge you to buy them.
Rating: Summary: Gollum Formerly known as Siego Review: Easily the greatest book series of all time. If your reading this review you probably have some idea what the book is about, so I'll just break it down book by book. The Hobbit, is the least darkest of the bunch, since it has little to do with the dark lord Sauron (Note to readers: the Hobbit is a prequel to the rest of the books so read that first. The Fellowship of the Ring is the boring one in the series, since over the first hundred page are in the Shire, and it only has two battles. The Two Towers is the most action packed, since it has Helms Deep, easily the coolest battle ever represented in a book. Lastly, Return of the King the without a doubt best book, and last in the series. I highly recomend reading these books, for you will then love these books.
Rating: Summary: A Box Worth of Fantasy Review: I was 13 when I first read the books, now with 30 staring me in the face, I read them again. It's like rediscovering an old friend and finding more sides than you remember. The box set is the complete story missing only one thing - "The Silmarillion." However the exception was published posthumously, but it's still a good read. The collection here looks good on the shelf next to the DVD of the movie (and subsequent ones) and also, while you're tearing through the pages reading, you can place it back in the box to prevent damage. Will there ever be an epic as big and mystical? Who knows, but this one belongs in our hearts and collection. If you want to rediscover, or have only seen the movies, here is the complete story.
Rating: Summary: One of the greatest books ever Review: This truly is one of the greatest works of art ever, and one of the greatest books. I love it, everything about it; the story is of course beautiful, emotional, everything and most of the characters are great and realistic (they're 'round' characters). Too bad it suddenly ended so fast, I wish it was longer.
Rating: Summary: Very Impressive Review: I bought this box set for my wife and she loves it. The first book "Hobbit" perfectly prefaces into "Fellowship of the Rings". If you enjoyed the movie, you'll love reading these. Tolkien is a phenominal writer and extremely creative. God has surely blessed him with an incredible ability to write fantasy novels.
Rating: Summary: The best darn book EveR Review: Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is the best book i have read yet. The figurative languages is astounding, and i just love the adventures and the astmosphere makes you not want to let this book go. Its my precious. I am so glad i read this timeless classic, because it has made one of the best movies i have ever seen. I cannot wait to see the upcoming movie and read all of the books. J.R.R Tolkien was a genius! ~Chris A
Rating: Summary: One of my top 5 favorites, (and I have an English degree!) Review: Warmly, vividly descriptive. If you like fantasy fiction, they don't come any better. You will know the characters intimately, immerse, and lose yourself in the landscape, and invest deeply in the plots. I received my boxed set for Christmas some 30 years ago. Today I have the overwhelming pleasure to order one for another nine year old girl... She has no idea what a wonderful ride on which she is about to embark!
Rating: Summary: The Most Extraordinary Masterpiece Of All Time Review: The Lord of the Rings is the best book I have ever read. The basic plot of it is the battle of good and evil. Tolkien takes you on a journey through a land called Middle-Earth where evil is returning to the lands. One ring holds the fate to their world and the only hope for their survival is it's destruction. The only catch is the ring can only be destroyed in a volcanoe that lies in the heart of the evil land. As the evil lord sends his servants forth to find the ring, wars brew. I must say the most touching thing in the Lord of the Rings is the idea of frienship that Tolkien presents us with. The book made me look at my friends and wonder if they would help me destroy the ring. I thought that after I was done reading I would feel unfullfilled(as I do with the endings in most books), but Tolkien truly was great author he leaves you with a ending that gives you a feeling of satisfaction. Anybody can write a book but only a great writer can end it.
Rating: Summary: I wanted to love these books....but I didn't Review: I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to love these books, but I didn't. My friend is a fantasy writer and he has suggested wonderful books in the genra to me in the time I've known him, so I was very much looking forward to be swept away by the "Lord of the Rings" and it's "Hobbit" prequel (afterall, these books are his God). Don't get me wrong, I see the brilliance of the peice, the language is amazing, the details are brilliant, but something about the story and the characters left me bored out of my mind 75% of the time. I was determined to read it, because it was claimed to be a classic, but it just never grabbed me. I found myself struggling through page after page and was forced to buy audio tapes just to finish the story (I was determined, afterall you've seen the rave reviews, I had to get blown away sooner or later, right? -- wrong). There were moments that grabbed me, but I never found myself invested in the story or the people. Like I said, I respect Tolkien, admired his attention to detail, and even recognized the beauty of the language. I've heard the Jackson film adaptation of the books mentioned (which I enjoyed). But without the details background supplied by Tolkien, Jackson proably would never have attempted such a film and proably would not have created anything close to it if left to create something original. I give him credit for making a good product, but 75% of the work was done for him by the pre-exsisting novels. I always respect the source, afterall I went and read the "Neverending Story" novel after I found out the movie was based on a book. Some people think, if there's a movie, why read the book. I think "this was a book, I must read it". And the Neverending Story novel, despite a small dragging transition scene or two, was ten times better than it's movie counterpart. That took me back to being a kid, LoTR just took me on a journey that dragged on and on, despite all the pretty decorations and "greatest ever" hype. Still others love it and like I said, there are elements of it that I respect. I liked the movie, I respect the books, but neither have really blown me away.
