Rating: Summary: This book was good Review: This book was a very good book. i would recomend this book to everyone it was very well writen. these r some of my favorite book i have already read the series one time. i will probably read it a once or twice again. I think the plot is good and i like the names he uses its amazing that J.R.R. Tolkien could come up with his own little language and maps for the book it seems that he has spent a lot of time on these books. If you havent seen the moves yet i would recomend it because they were very good the book is much better but i also like the movies. if you read one book you will not be able to put them down.
Rating: Summary: the best book ever writen Review: well, you may think the lord of the rings sounds good, well listen here missy its AMAZINGLY super exelently positivly funly super happy good that if anyone thinks its bad i'll stick a fork up there (you know what) and twist it! this book is so magical, some may say "this book is awsome, it has fighting in it" but thats not the best part, the greatest part is all the magic, and the stuff you would never see in any old fantasy novel. those include giant spiders, magical elves, dwarves, and hobbits, and orcs (which are horible mockeries of elves, with black skin and really ugly faces) and urak-hai (another kind of orc, but bigger and uglier, and stronger). this book is also a inspiring tale, with many lessons. an exaple is the battle of helms deep, 10 000 urak-hai invade a fortress. how many defend the fortress? a few hundred men and elves! 10 000 vs. a few hundred, those people are out of there minds, right? no they arn't, there patriots. its such a heroic battle (its in part two the two towers) and if you don't read the book, atleast see the movie! the lord of the rings is about a magic ring that cannot be destroyed unless it is thrown in mount doom. think it sound lame? haha its a great story, far from lame. a fellowship to destroy the ring is made, 9 people (all of royalty or some inportant familly). first is Frodo, a hobbit who is given the ring by his uncle (who didn't know it was the one ring) and goes on a journey to the elf city rivendell. on the way he is kept company by his best friend samwise (sam). Frodo also meets his coussins meriadoc (merry, a funny hobbit who is best friends with his coussin pippin) Perigrin (pippin) is also a relitive of Frodo, but closer than merry. they join the fellowship with 5 others though. Aragorn is first afer those 4, he is the hier of isildor, the long dead king of gondor, but not king ( although he should be) he is strong and is in love with the elf princess arwen. theres also boromir, the steward of gonder's son, who will be ruler of gondor after his father even though aragorn is supposed to. theres lagolas, prince of mirkwood, a elf bowman with very percise accuracy. And finally Gimili, son of gloin, who is a dwarf of a wealthy and respected familly. This novel is very good, but the ending is kind of sad (its also a happy ending, so don't be worried if you hate sad endings ok) who cares about the ending, the whole story is so good, you'll cry when your done, and the last chapter tells you what happend to the charecters ok, so you won't be upset that the story dosen't have an epilouge. This is the best book ever writen! IF I COULD I'D GIVE IT AMILLION OUT OF FIVE STARS! every time who read it it has something you missed, so after you read the lord of the rings and the hobbit, re read them many times. enjoy this book and PEACE OUT!
Rating: Summary: A excellent book Review: I think this book is very interesting. J.R.R. Tolkien has written a thrilling story about a world of fable. But the Lord of the rings is only one part of the history from Middle-earth. He has create a whole world and when the drawfs went back into the mountains and the elves leave Middle-earth, then the world went to our world, how we know. Lord of the rings is the greatest part of his stories about Middle-earth and many people had read the tree books and now, because of the movie, this story is very popular! I very recommend this book!!! Kerstin
Rating: Summary: The best books ever Review: I'm not good at writing things like this, but I just recently finished all of the Lord of the Rings books, and they are the greatest things I have ever read. The places, the people, everything is just so wonderful and magical. I don't think I'll ever be able to read anything again (or at least for a while) without comparing it to these books. You HAVE to read these, and if you think that they're boring at the beginning, don't worry; by the end they're wonderful.
Rating: Summary: Amazing features Review: Its amazing the way J.R. Tolkein put this fantasy land into words. You could almost see the creatures in their surroundings. I think that the way he wrote the book is almost like the movie. you can easily invision the pictures given his discriptive writing. I think you should read this book because it shows you a way of determination and courage and how one simple hobbit can go from a peacful simple life to an amazing adventerous one and of course he has his friends to help him along the way. Over this amount of time that he is on his adventure he gains the respect of the other creatures that are with him. I highly recomend this book to all adventurous readers! Thus the adventure begins!
Rating: Summary: Terribly overrated Review: Terribly overrated I know that by writing this I will probably draw the wrath of a lot of die-hard fans. I've read many of the reviews and I respect the opinions of some of the people that adore this series. However a few of the positive reviews listed here are undoubtedly written by overweight, sarcastic, "intellectuals" who spent their youth playing "Dungeons and Dragons", watching "Star Trek" and Dr. Who" and dreaming that some day a woman might actually look at them..... but back to my review. The first book in the series "The Hobbit" is actually quite good. The characters are likeable, the adventure is interesting and the writing flows and is well paced. I liked the dragon much better than Sauron. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the LOTR's trilogy. I noticed immediately from the beginning of FOTR that the writing style, which in "The Hobbit" was straightforward and unpretentious, became bloated and longwinded. As far as the trilogy goes....FOTR is easily the best in the series, though I felt it could have been cut by 100 pages. The basic idea is quite compelling and in the beginning I was intrigued. But as the pages went on I realized that Tolkien obviously was very full of himself and his Middle-Earth. Obviously one must have patience to allow a writer time to describe the world that his characters live in. However this entire trilogy is a study in WRETCHED EXCESS. Page after page Tolkien endlessly describes, valleys, hills, mountains, knolls, forests, trees, rivers, lakes, cliffs, rocks, etc. etc. etc. And when he isn't hitting us over the head with the landscape he gives us ENDLESS stories of Middle-Earth's legends, myths, history, tales, and poems. This didn't bother me all that much in the FOTR as I felt that he was not only telling Frodo and Gandalf's story but setting the stage for the next novels as well. However upon reading "The Two Towers" I realized that I was in trouble. Once again Tolkien was compelled to RELENTLESSLY describe.... valleys, hills, mountains, knolls, forests, trees, rivers, lakes, cliffs, rocks, etc. etc. etc. At times I felt that he was so wrapped up in creating a travelogue for Middle-Earth that he forgot that he was supposed to be telling a story. I liked the characters of Frodo, Sam and Gandalf (and Bilbo in "The Hobbit") However most of the remaining characters I found to be rather boring, as they tediously hold out their swords and talked of more legends, myths, history, tales, and poems. The last half of "The Two Towers" was especially excruciating to endure, as was "Return of the King" . For me it became an ordeal to even finish these books much less recommend them to someone else. Again I felt the basic premise of this trilogy was outstanding. I had only wished it had been delivered in a way that was a bit more energetic and alive. Some of the fans of this series will have to accept that there is a large group of people who do not like these books. And they are not simply idiots who never have the patience to read a few sentences. They are well-read people who just were bogged down by a bloated 1000 page trilogy that should have been half that length.
Rating: Summary: Do you really want to buy a paperback set? Review: These books have really captured the imagination of my two middle-school aged children. They read these books over and over again and are experts on all the trivia. As a result, I will be in the market for a hardback set real soon! I think it's great!
Rating: Summary: Lord Of The Rings Boxed Set Review: Good Value and easy to keep up with
Rating: Summary: This is a Terrific Tale Review: 20+ years ago one of my nephews would talk your ear off about this great story he was reading called "The Lord of the Rings". I should have listened to him and read it then. Even though I waited so long, I am glad I finally did read it. Coupled with the first two movie installments, reading the books has been extremely enjoyable for me. I plan to read them all again next year, starting with "The Hobbit", so that I complete them just before the final movie installment is released. I recommend this particular set of books to anyone who can read and enjoy a great adventure tale. I must say that I almost did not read this great story because of the introduction chosen by the publisher. Who is this guy Peter S. Beagle whose assessment of "The Lord of the Rings" was used in all of the volumes as the introduction? Is he for real?...
Rating: Summary: Great Set Review: As a Tolkein fan since age 10, I bought this set because my old paperback copies were falling apart. I was very impressed with the books' paper quality, cover art, and the biographical information they contained. If you haven't read Tolkein, buy this set. If you have read Tolkein and your old copies are wearing out, this set is a great buy.
